Jessie’s Bargain by Kate P. Dawson

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017
I am a stay at home mom, who loves to read and write clean historical romance. I enjoy thinking back to a simpler time, a time when men
and women were true heroes. I also believe that a good romance can be told without needing to know all of the details;)
All of my stories will tell of people who find true love, and who find their happy ever after. Sometimes the road might be rocky, but that
makes it all worthwhile!

Cora left England for a new life in America as a mail order bride – only to find the man she’s come to marry has been killed in a gunfight.
She has a sister in Kansas, but how can she get there?
Jesse needs this job driving cattle to Kansas so he can marry the woman who’s given him an ultimatum – buy land and settle down, or she’ll
marry someone who will.
But, his cook’s been killed in the same gunfight, leaving him without anyone to drive the chuckwagon. His right hand man, an old cowboy with a soft heart, has a solution for both Cora and Jesse – one he might not like.
Dressed as a boy, Cora heads off with a team of cowboys, led by a man who isn’t happy about her being there. Kansas is a long way away…and a lot can happen before they get there.

Pulling her
shoulders back and lifting her chin, she put her gloved hand out to him.  “Well sir, since you haven’t properly
introduced yourself to me, my name is Cora Murphy.  I’ve traveled all the way from England to
meet and marry a man named Patrick McClintock.
I just stepped off the stagecoach when the fight broke out, and am now
left awaiting the arrival of my future husband.”
As she
spoke, she watched his face turn red at the reminder of his lack of
manners.  But as she continued, she
noticed his eyes cringe when she mentioned the man’s name she was to marry.  He quickly whipped his head toward Shorty,
before looking back at her.
“My
name’s Jesse Atwell, ma’am.  And, I’m
very sorry to have to tell you this, but the man you are to marry is lying over
there on the street with a bullet in his back.”

Running from hostile Indians attacking Salina, Kansas in 1862, feisty Kizzie Atwell, Grandma Mary’s oldest grandchild, runs into freighter Leander Jones traveling the Smoky Hill Trail. He is as interested in her as his stallion is in her mare. The two join forces to prevent the Fort Riley Army captain from requisitioning their beloved horses for the cavalry. Avoiding
bushwhackers and fighting off a thieving bullwhacker binds their bargain.
In 1865, at the victory dance held at Fort Riley to celebrate the end of the Civil War, Kizzie is asked to participate in a fund-raiser to
aid the Sanitary Commission helping injured and sick soldiers. It involves
chaste sweetheart kisses in exchange for tickets purchased by officers and guests. As a contract freighter for the Army, Leander is invited. Much to Leander’s chagrin, before his chance to claim his kiss, Kizzie’s uncle steps in and puts an end to the kissing game.
Is Leander out of luck, or will the bargain Kizzie and Leander made three years earlier to save their horses lead to a more romantic bargain sealed with a kiss?

packing the wagon had used up what little reserve of energy Mima had still
possessed. She had watched as her mother had crawled into her wagon box next to
Meredith and, with a sigh, had leaned back against a stack of bedding. Jessie
had climbed into the seat to drive the wagon, settling the shotgun at his feet.
          Kizzie gritted
her teeth as she recalled how he had barked an order at her just as she had
finished handing the jug with the willow bark tea to Grandpa. “Kizzie, make
sure the barn and corral are clear then catch up and get in the wagon. We’re
leaving now.”

Ted
edged in closer. “You can take a few moments for one dance.” He
eyed Tessa. “You don’t mind if I borrow your sister, do you?”
But
I do.”
The
deep, masculine voice sent an arousing jolt right into Emersyn’s
core. And damn it to hell, her mouth went dry, making it impossible
to swallow. She fingered her straw then took a deep drink. This time
she welcomed the burning chill against her lungs. Detective Alec
Pearce had a knack for showing up at her worst moments. Why the hell
was he here?
Ted
moved away from her as if he’d been burned. “Alec, good to see
you.”
You
do know you’re hitting on my partner’s daughter, right, Ted?”
Just
asking her for a dance.”
Emersyn
glanced between the two; she actually preferred Ted’s company to
the man who seemed to go out of his way to make her crazy.
Alec
reached for her hand and set it in his palm. “Actually, she
promised this dance to me. They’re playing our song.”
The
muscles in her body tensed as her fingernails dug into his skin. “I
don’t—”
Music
is on, Em. Shall we?” His other hand went around her waist, and he
gave her a swift yank.
Jerkball,
let go,” she hissed in his ear.
His
grip tightened. “It’s just one dance. Play nice.”
Alec
escorted Emersyn to the small dance floor near the bandstand. Every
instinct in her wanted to slap his arrogant expression right into
next week, but that would make a scene. It was what half the bar
expected the instant he got within striking distance. They were all
waiting for her to let loose. But this was a new day, a new diploma,
new job, new Emersyn. Emotions in check.
My
name is Emersyn. I would think you would remember something so
simple.”
Alec’s
face lit with a grin as his arms brought her close and their bodies
began to move to the music. She shot a glare at Tessa, pleading for
her to do something. Instead, her sister, the traitor, took another
sip of Emersyn’s drink, lifted it in a toast, and rotated in her
seat.
A
chuckle came from deep in Alec’s throat. “Tessa likes me. You can
thank me now.”
I
can also knee you where the sun doesn’t shine.”
He
lifted her chin with his thumb. “Now that wasn’t nice. I
sacrificed a night with that blonde”—he nodded to a beautiful
woman sitting at the end of the bar—“just to keep Lecher Ted from
hitting on you … again.”
What
makes you think I needed rescuing?”
Oh
please, Tessa, make the creep go away. I’m ever so sweet and don’t
want to hurt the poor jerk’s feelings.”
She
yanked out of Alec’s hold, but he was ready and moved her back into
his arms without missing a beat.
Relax.
I’m teasing.”
You
are such an ass.”
His
lips brushed over her ear. “Enjoy our moment, Em.”
Impossible.
They had more layers of misunderstanding between them than her
mother’s chocolate cake, heated words that couldn’t be unheard
and arguments with no closure.
After
her father had mentioned at dinner that Alec was joining them for
dessert, she’d jumped at Tessa’s offer to buy her a drink at the
tavern. It was the perfect place to hide out. A lone wolf like Alec
wouldn’t be caught dead in the crowded, noisy bar. But here he was.
She’d run but not far enough.
I’m
sorry I missed your graduation ceremony, but I have a little
something for you,” he whispered.
You
didn’t need to do that.”
I’m
proud of you.”
The
words sounded so genuine. “Dad seems resigned to the idea of me at
least working alongside cops, if not as a cop.”
Joe
doesn’t want you anywhere near the job. But you found a way around
that. Instead of crawling in the gutter looking for the worst mankind
has to offer, you’re picking through what they left behind.”
She
halted in the middle of the dance floor. “You think that’s why I
became a forensic scientist?”
I
didn’t mean it like that.”
Then
what did you mean?”
The
music stopped, and they stood still, glaring at each other. Our
thing. “I can’t do this tonight,” she said, dropping her hand
to her sides. “Thanks.”
For?”
Saving
me from another go-around with Ted.”
Do
you want me to talk to him?”
I
can take care of myself.”
For
once, there was no comeback. Instead, he eased her against him and
tucked her hand over his heart. “Dance with me, Emersyn.”
That
sexy, got-to-have-you-now voice was back, and her other four senses
came out to play. Being close to Alec Pearce, taking in his spicy,
clean soap scent, feeling the strength of his arms around her wasn’t
an awful feeling. Confusing? Hell yes, but her body sure enjoyed it.
It’s just a dance, right?
She
lowered one hand to his hip and brought the other around his neck,
her cheek resting against his. Alec tightened his grip around her
waist as he spun them around the dance floor. The move put their
bodies in sync, and there was no mistaking the effect she had on him.
Her lips brushed against his skin, sending shock waves through her.
He
sucked in a breath and tilted his head. Their gazes held for what
seemed like an eternity. He was so damn gorgeous, his deep brown eyes
with a hint of gold, lush lashes, and a dusting of five-o’clock
shadow on his square jaw that she ached to feel rubbed against all
her soft places. As if he read her mind, his mouth caressed her
bottom lip. He waited, expecting her to pull back. Need took over,
and she lost her mind.

What could melt a Heart of Stone?

Heart
of Stone
by
Rob Buckman
Genre:
SciFi, Action
Mike
Grainger had enough of killing and death, and all he wanted now was
to be left alone in peace and to forget the past, finding a quiet
place, high in the Rocky Mountains where he could live his life.
Maybe now he could put the ghost that haunted him to rest. Here,
death and destruction were forces of nature, something he understood,
and respected, yet even as he watched a storms moving across the
mountains another storm swept towards him, one that had nothing to do
with the weather.
To
Roland Hawkins’, his world revolved around money and power, and
gaining a fortune that nothing could destroy. To him, disposing of
people who stood in his way meant nothing. He felt no remorse when he
ordered people killed to fulfill his ambition. Now he wanted an
insignificant section of land high in the Rockies, and to consummate
his latest business deal he’d arranged the death of the previous
owner. To his consternation, the land slipped from his grasp before
his agents could obtain it, and due to poor judgment and timing the
land was purchased by another. In fury, he ordered the property be
obtained by any means necessary, thinking his power and money would
protect him from anything. Nowhere in his calculation did he consider
the new owner, Mike Grainger, thinking him nothing more than some
local hick to be disposed of as quickly as possible. Bribery,
extortion, and murder were tools to Roland Hawkins and used to
justify his ambition. Mike Grainger used death and destruction as a
tool to keep what was his. To him, life and death were meaningless,
his own included. It would have all been so easy if Kat Ballard
hadn’t stepped into the picture. She gave him a reason to live, to
care, and pushed the stakes even higher. Now, it was not just a
question of fighting a pack of hired killers on their trail, but
staying one jump ahead of them. He now had to consider someone else’s
life, as well as trying to discover why Roland Hawkins wanted his
land so badly.
Together
they fought the mountain, the mercenaries, the elements, and each
other in a wild death hunt over and under the mountains, finding love
and losing it. Now he was mad. Roland Hawkins would pay a high price
for his ambition: his life. The hunted would now become the hunter.

The
Gray Chronicals 1
by
Rob Buckman
For
Mike Gray, his life was a series of mysteries and unanswered
question. Even the man who raised him, his paternal grandfather, was
a question mark. Beyond the love, understanding, and nurturing lay
the unanswered question of why a disgraced ex-Royal Naval Admiral
would pulled himself out of a bottle and take upon himself to bring a
one year old child home as raise him as his own. The question of why
his family, the Tregallion clan, refused to come to his aid went
unanswered. Even so, between them they build a life for themselves
until the fateful day he died. After that, Mike fled across the
stars, swearing he would never again take the responsibility for
another person’s death. Fate and destiny had other ideas, plunging
him into one situation after the other where he had to take command,
and decide the fate of others. With war on the horizon, and the
future of the free stars hanging in the balance, Mike reluctantly
accepted his destiny, and the part he must play. For better or worse,
he would find the answered to his question, and make those
responsible pay a terrible price.

Echo

The
Drake Chronicles Book 1
For
General Scott Drake the attack on four American cities by religious
fanatic using nuclear weapons destroyed not only US cities, but his
life as he knew it. They say that vengeance is a dish best served
cold, but to the men and woman who went with him over the border to
deliver that vengeance, it was dish served hot, and out of the barrel
of a gun and cannon, and from the air. Yet in victory came defeat as
he found three hundred years later in the world he woke up in. One
far different from the one he’d left behind when he went into cold
sleep. Now he had to find a place in this strange new world, one
without the means to wage war against an alien race raping the planet
of its young people. First, he had to build an army, navy and air
force from scratch while fending off attacks from the aliens and the
secret government that wanted to put him and his men back into cold
sleep or the grave.

I

am a 65 year old retired mechanical engineer, ex-soldier, ex-sailor,
have mined and prospected for gold in the Amazon jungle in places no
white man has ever been, and generally tried to be a ‘jack of all
trades’ and turn my hand to many things. This came in handy when I
started to write, as I could draw on many different experiences, both
positive and negative to build my stories and characters. To me,
writing is similar to another activity that men do alone… no, not
that, I meant fishing (lol), in that it gives your mind a chance to
wander down strange pathways, and try to answer the question ‘What
if?’. Like many self published authors did before me, I posted my
stories before I had the means, or readership to edit or proofread
the stories, for which you have my apologies, and have attempted to
correct that oversight.  Like any good author, I try to write an
entertaining story of interest to a particular group of reader, i.e.
Sci-fi fans, and not to win an English essay contest, composition
award, or a spelling bee. With luck I have achieved that end, and beg
your indulgence, and hope you will overlook any irritating errors you
still may come across while reading and not let them detract from the
your overall enjoyment of the storytelling.
At
the moment I am working on Book Three of both ‘Echo of Tomorrow’
and ‘He Who Dares’.  During my ‘spare’ time I’m also
working on several short stories and plotting out sequels to a couple
of my other short stories.

Can a Princess be handicapped?

Tuesday, February 14th, 2017
Just in time for Valentines and for your favorite lady, a new clean, young adult, medieval fantasy romance hit the market today. “A Golden Princess,” book three in A Royal Romance Series of Anna del C. Dye is a stand-alone story. You will find an array of characters, fears, love, endurance and heroes, between its pages. Enjoy!

About the book:

Small for her age, Princess Nyala is determined to be noticed and someday rule with fairness and valor in Kaloma. All changes when she looks upon the stars and they predict her accident. After she awakens to a broken body, her father takes to his goblet and she steps into power in her kingdom at sixteen.

Her father said that no man would choose a half-broken princess. Is that how Prince Nicolao sees her after the accident? Her heart is unsure and out of fear she keeps him away to avoid a broken heart.

As soon the other kingdoms in the land determine the predicament of the Royal House of Kaloma, they too will prey on her vulnerability to steal her kingdom. She will have to confront new foes or lose it all.

What other said about the book:

Review by Roseanne Wilkins: A Golden Princess is a story about overcoming hardship and finding true love. This story is a clean romance suitable for pre-teens. I enjoyed the story of love and loss and finding love again through hardship. There aren’t many tales put in a medieval setting that involve strong female characters, especially characters who are physically challenged. Much of the relationship-building between the main characters is told in past perspective after Princess Nyala is injured. Moments are lived through her memories. When Nyala accepts her injuries and moves forward, the story takes off. It was good to read a story where the main character has to face a life very different from what she had planned. I love happily-ever-after’s, and Anna del C. Dye knows how to deliver.

A family curse… the women of her family, kill the men they love

Monday, February 13th, 2017

Jan would rather write than eat or sleep, which is handy for authors—not so much for husbands. Her research as a nutritionist inspired an unusual murder weapon for Heir of Deceit. Favorite writing moment: meeting famous moonshiner Popcorn Sutton while during research in Asheville, North Carolina for Heir of Deceit. She has won national contests for her comedic poetry on subjects such as Black Friday and her messy kitchen. Some are included in her humor book My Word, That’s Absurd! along with her prize-winning children’s story, Miss Mousie and Mrs. McGreggor’s Closet.
Jan’s quirky sense of humor could classify her as eccentric, but she prefers the term “crazy.” She is the author of two novels, Heir of Deceit and Impressions of Innocence and a non-fiction humor book, My Word, That’s Absurd! She’s going nuts deciding which of seven book ideas she wants to work on next.
She loves cactus flowers, road runners, horned toads (and people). She enjoys cooking, teaching, and learning. The day she stops learning will be the day she stops breathing. She and her husband are the parents of six children.
Jan wrote for a local newspaper at age 11. She worked for her high school and college journalism departments, and as a case worker, tobacco prevention coordinator, and nutritionist. In addition, she has taught religion classes to high school students for more than 31 years as a volunteer.

Lacey vows to uncover the secrets of her lineage, even if it requires her ultimate sacrifice–the loss of her marriage to her beloved Evs.

Her search leads to the Smoky Mountain backwoods, where the shotgun is more respected than the law, and family may not be what is expected. HEIR OF DECEIT is set in an area, where, even today, hands of tobacco are used as currency, and moonshine stills explode.

Snippet:
We traveled back from Cherokee in a silent and reflective mood. Despite the late hour, the trip ended too soon.
Tsali walked me to my motel room door and lingered in the hallway. “Lacey, I have to tell you something before I burst.”
I looked up at him, but found that I could say nothing.
“After our experiences together tonight, I feel so close to you. I’m afraid I am falling horribly, desperately in love with you.”
“Tsali . . .”
“I know. Friends. I promised you.
But this beating drum in my chest won’t stop what it feels. Are you the sacrifice I must give for a strong and proud people?”
“Or is Evs the sacrifice I must give to join a strong and a proud people?” I placed my hand on his arm. He seemed so tall, so powerful at that moment, I needed the touch to balance my unsteady body and my teetering heart.
Tsali lifted my chin upward as he bent toward my lips.
“Please, Tsali, I can’t.” My lips trembled and my stomach leapt in a confusion of joy and pain. “I feel it too, each time I’m around you. Then to have the Spirit of Tsali allow me to see him—to share that with you—maybe it’s a sign. But I can’t. Not until I learn where my own life will go.”
He held his face so very close to mine that I could feel his words. “Lacey, as the original Tsali honored his
wife at the peril of his life, I will honor your wishes, and my promise to you.
However long it takes, I promise you.”
I could feel the warmth of his skin through the space between us like a connecting current. I wondered if he could feel it, too. “I will always treasure this night,” I said, “and what you have told me, even if we never speak of it again.”

Our sister was hunted down to be sacrifice to the goddess

When Kimberley was a kid she read a book a day, scribbled stories, and dreamed about having her very own book on the library shelf. After growing up in San Francisco, she now lives in an adobe house on the banks of the Rio Grande with her big, messy family.

My sister laid the tablet in her lap, running a finger along the symbols with affection.
“To Jayden, daughter of the Nephish From Aliyah, Goddess of Sariba The Goddess and High
Priestess of Sariba officially invite you to witness the summer solstice sacrifice in two day’s time. It will be a night you will remember for the rest of your life. A permanent kinship with the Goddess will bless you and your family forever.”
“She sent an invitation to watch Sahmril sacrificed!” Grabbing the tablet, I threw it across the room where it hit the corner of a table and broke into pieces.
With a shriek, Leila staggered off the chair and crawled across the floor. Picking up the shards, she cradled them in her hands, trying to fit them together.
“Leila, what is wrong with you? How could you bring this despicable letter to me?”
She raised her eyes to mine. “You’ve been invited as a special guest because our little sister has been chosen to honor the Goddess. Her sacrifice will bring peace and love to this land. She is the pure vessel. We’re so lucky to have found her.”
“Lucky?” I echoed. The nonchalance manner in which she spoke was horrifying. “Our sister was hunted down for the express purpose of sacrificing her to the goddess.”

Jesse lunged toward me. It was too late. I had already launched. He reached out but
didn’t connect. Instead, I broke the trajectory of my upper body by
grabbing him at chest level and sliding down. He was pushed backward
into the table, which stabilized our ungainly host-parasite tableau.
He softened my landing so that physically I was fine, but my pride
was ready for intensive care.
Heaped at his feet, like a demented penitent, I hugged his knees, my face pressed flat
into his thighs. I might as well stay down. What’s worse? To
stand up and face you, or remain here, nestled between your legs?
What do you think?
Then, the finishing touch: I erupted into
nervous, snorting laughter. He guessed there was no serious injury.
It’s nice to see you, too. You are okay, aren’t you? Can you stand?” He
reached for my arms to unwrap them from his legs and help me up. I
jammed my eyelids together to conjure up a do-over, but no such
luck.
I would have to deal with it.
He held my elbows in his hands. “I guess we were both in a hurry to see each other.”
I do appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood, but you are standing SO close. I
can feel your body heat. Or is that mine? By the way, you smell tart
and fresh, like a lime.

I stared at his shoulder. My dignity meter was stuck on empty.
Enthusiastic greeting. Thanks for that.” He was blatantly amused.
It was nothing.”
I stepped backward to regain a semblance of independence. Don’t
mock me. But, you did go to all the trouble to bring your hair. And
your eyes. I might forgive you for witnessing my disgrace. That
hair.

even tragic endings.
Facts are facts, and a writer doesn’t mess with facts.
But fiction is another world. Patrice began writing novels, where she can
control the endings and make them as happy as she wants. The best
thing about fiction, she says, is having time to think before her
characters speak, so they can say the things most of us only come up
with after the perfect moment has passed.

turns out the way it should. Her only obsessive relationships are
with semicolons and Oxford commas.
Though she doesn’t like to brag, Patrice is an award-winning artist. She won

Cursed by the Fountain of Youth… how?

Wednesday, February 8th, 2017

Holly Kelly is a mom who writes books in her spare time: translation–she hides in the bathroom with her laptop and locks the door while the kids destroy the house and smear peanut butter on the walls. She was born in Utah but moved around a bit, living in Kansas, Texas, and Hawaii where she studied marine biology. She’s now back in Utah–“happy valley”. She’s married to a wonderful husband, James, and they are currently raising 6 rambunctious children. Her interests are reading, writing (or course), martial arts, visual arts, creating Halloween props, and spending time with family.

For centuries, countless adventurers have searched for the Fountain of Youth. Those who found it thought they would gain eternal life. Instead, they find themselves murdered by its guardians. There was, however, one, lone survivor—Fae Miller. As an infant, she not only survived the Fountain, she took its power.

Twenty-two years later, Fae is hiding in plain sight at a local college. She’s is determined to leave the past behind her and live a normal life. But for one dying man, the search for the Fountain of Youth continues, and he is leaving a trail of blood and mutilated bodies in his wake. Unfortunately, that trail leads directly to Fae. Her only hope is a young, new college professor, also known as Special Agent Nick Chase of the FBI. Nick is determined to do two things: keep Fae alive, and keep his relationship with his student professional. Both of these jobs prove difficult—especially when love and magic get involved.

“I wouldn’t call eternal youth a
curse.”

It can be. There is no fear as
universal as the fear of death. Men will kill to stop it. They will do the most
heinous and terrible things to avoid it. And giving you the power to grant
eternal life will make you forever a target.

Can a human heart overcome a demon soul?

When soul-eating demons overrun his world, Kaelis, a young seraph warrior, uses the Queen’s ring to open a portal in space and flee with the infant heir to the throne, landing on earth. Unbeknownst to him, the demon leader, Nsark, follows through the portal, determined to devour the soul of every last seraph, especially the Queen’s heir. After Kaelis hides the baby, Nsark creates the ultimate weapon by fathering a half-human, half-demon: a soul-stealer’s child.

Sixteen years later, an awkward teen named James struggles to fit in with his peers. In a last-ditch effort, he joins the school play, where he meets Lucy. Something deep draws them together, and their friendship reveals their hidden pasts: one is an angel, one is half-demon. Lucy and James find themselves pulled into an age-old war between their peoples. Hunted by relentless enemies, and grappling with deep-seated instincts and strange new powers, they must fight for their lives, their souls, and each other.

Snippet:
His rich baritone voice crescendoed in a dark laugh, pulling her gaze back to the stage. Backlit by slanted beams of light, his black curls gleamed. Gray eyes blazed so bright they were almost silver. High, sharp cheekbones soared above full, powerful lips. The cape draped over his broad shoulders, following his tapered form to the floor. Something fierce and powerful seethed inside him like a midnight storm. Was it just acting? Or was the role of Dracula opening a window into what was really inside him? Acting or not, something about James called to her.
