Kathryn Olsen (aka Kaki) has been to 17 countries on five continents.

After an illustrious upbringing in Massachusetts, she studied English at Brigham Young University. As a result, she’s been known to find theological flaws in zombie lore and Peruvian sacrifice metaphors in Superman movies.

Her debut novel, Swan and Shadow, was published in March, 2016.

Black
The summer before we
turned thirteen, Aislin and I got to spend a whole month away at camp. It was
one of those all-purpose places that had a name worthy of Thoreau or a
retirement home. The camp had something for everyone, from hiking to skits, but
they stuck Aislin and me in different cabins and we rejoiced. Aislin was in
Bunk 3 with Jill and Bekah, who taught her how to sail and talk to boys. I was
in Bunk 9 with girls who wanted to try makeup and fawn over Derrick Ferrell.
They traded diving lessons for eyeliner tips.
New friends aside, we
couldn’t stand ignoring each other, so we ate dinner together and teamed up for
canoeing. We once swapped bunks and would have gotten away with it if Aislin’s
counselor hadn’t noticed that I had been cured of my hay fever.
Just after the Fourth
of July, disaster struck. Aislin’s counselor pulled me aside to ask where she
was. I hadn’t seen her and the same went for her friends and counselors. I
headed to my bunk after dinner in case my sister turned up there.
Shortly after dark,
Aislin started throwing rocks at my screen. I snuck out of the bunk and found
her hiding behind a birch tree. She was crying and naked and promised to tell
me everything if I could bring her some clothes and a tampon. I brought both of
them without asking questions and while she got changed, I sought out Nina, her
counselor.
Aislin told the
higher-ups that she’d gone skinny-dipping on a dare and someone had swiped her
clothes. Terrified that someone from camp would see her, she’d hidden in the
woods until night. Nina was sympathetic to the awkward teenager, but
skinny-dipping and going MIA were both against the rules. Aislin got kitchen
duty for her infraction and got told that the next time, parents would be
called.
Once we were alone,
Aislin told me that she’d spent all day with wings and the conviction that
she’d gone bonkers. I had no reason to doubt her, but I witnessed her
transformation the next day to prove that it wasn’t a hallucination. After
seeing my twin sister’s hands sprout feathers and watching her shrink to swan
size, I’d wondered if I was bonkers too.
When Aislin went
missing again, I knew exactly where to find her, but there was no way I was
telling Nina. So I shrugged miserably and said I hadn’t seen her that day.
The camp director
decided that both of us had problems with authority. My parents didn’t believe
that, but they didn’t argue when we were asked to leave camp early.

Sons of Elderberry and the wood-fairies of Estraelia

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

When Elias of Elderberry introduces his best friend Jaron Finley to his magical world of fairies and castles, wizards and yōkai shape-shifters, will Jaron ever want to go back to his dull world of school and homework, especially after meeting Elieli, the fairy princess of Estraelia? It’s doubtful, but he must—the mortal that he is. Will Elias have to alter his memory and erase all that his friend has seen, or will Jaron be able to keep the secret that Elias Rey—a sophomore at PVHS, is a wizard and the youngest heir of Elderberry?

Held captive by evil wraiths in the dungeons of Sirusas, Elias’s older brother Saulen struggles with remembering who he is. How will the sons of Elderberry battle the dark forces of sorcery and rescue him?
And finally, when Adalee trips and falls by a nest abandoned from a Swypht Dragon of Ural, she takes an egg, knowing it has little chance to survive on its own. How will she keep it hidden in the non-dragon fairy kingdom of Estraelia? And why should she?
Reviews:
Elias of Elderberry is a truly marvelous book! The action, concept, and mysteries contained in this novel are intensely compelling and exciting. Not satisfied with simply writing an entertaining story, Sneed fills the pages with lessons about temptation, addiction, and the morals of right versus wrong. – R.L. Drembic
The Sons of Elderberry! Book One, Elias of Elderberry, was fantastic! I am eager to read the continuing sequels. Do any of us really know who we are and what our real worth is? Fifteen-year-old Elias was soon to discover things beyond his wildest imagination. This is about present day with regular school attendance, yet also, time travel with castles, dungeons, dragons and more! There were many characters well-defined and realistic. Also, the scenes were portrayed very well so the reader was able to easily picture them occurring. My Review of this book offers a Five Stars rating. – LAWonder10

Author Theresa Sneed graduated cum
laude with a BA in education, and though she loves teaching, she is currently
taking a break from it to pursue a writing career.
Her
books are unique; each story will take you to places you have never imagined before.
She writes across four genres—mystery and suspense, fantasy, historical
fiction/time travel, and realistic paranormal. All of Theresa’s books have
elements of sweet romance, and while none of her books have profanity or
sexually explicit scenes, each book is intriguing and white-knuckle intense—the
kind you can’t put down.
The No Angel series is the story about a
guardian angel with an attitude, and the ever present, but misunderstood spirit
world.  There are four published books in
the series with many more to come. Book one is called Angel with an Attitude, book two – Earthbound Angel, book three – Destiny’s
Angel
, and book four – Earth Angel.
The
Sons of Elderberry series has two
books out called Elias of Elderberry, and The Wood Fairies of Estraelia.
Harry-Potterish—with wizards, fairies, elves, pixies, yōkai shapeshifters, and
dragons, this book has it all! Theresa anticipates another three to five books
to finish that series.
Escape is
the story of a 15 year old girl abducted by a corrupt sheriff in the 70’s. He
keeps her captive in his cellar for five years until she escapes with his truck
and his young daughter. Escape is
book one in a three book series.
Salem Witch Haunt
was intended to be a stand-alone book, until the shocking ending made it
apparent that her characters were not finished telling their story. As the
ninth great granddaughter of one of the women hanged as a witch in Salem,
Theresa has a vested interest in this epic time-travel. Thoroughly researched,
all interactions with real people from that era are based on primary
sources—the trial scene with Susannah Martin is taken from Reverend Samuel
Parris’s transcript verbatim.

From Chapter Two:

Jaron Finley

In the fairy kingdom of Estraelia, the birth of a fairy is a spectacular event. It happens much like the Merwing, once every thousand years, when hundreds of infant fairies enter their world for the first time. Elieli beckoned for Elias and Samuel to follow her. They slipped away from the feast unnoticed, as the others continued talking and eating Elderberry pie, topped with swirls of white-lemon cream.

“Hurry! I want to show you something.” They followed her through the chamber and on through the ballroom, but instead of leaving the donjon the way the boys had entered, she took them down a long hallway, then up a narrow flight of circular stairs that tightly hugged the castle’s stone wall. The evening sky greeted them, as they neared the top of the sixth tower. Though they stepped out to a spectacular view of the woods and the tiny village far below, it was the stars that stood out the most. The heavens danced, as they twinkled brightly, setting off bursts of energy that filled the sky with gentle fireworks of bluish-white lights.

Samuel pointed to the sky. “What is this? I’ve never seen the stars look like that!”

“It is the Dance of the Fairies,” Elieli said, gazing up at them. “They do look like stars, don’t they?”

Samuel glanced from one shining orb to the next. “They are stars, Elieli. Aren’t they?”

“No,” she said, with a sigh, “not stars.” She looked at the boys then took a small, clear stone from her pocket and held it up to the shimmering display of lights. “Look!” she exclaimed, pointing through the stone to the lights.

“Wow!” Elias said, with a gasp. “It’s hundreds of wood fairies!” He could see them clearly now, even though they were miles away in the sky—lifting their magnificent wings slowly up and down in beautiful, synchronized patterns of dance.

RANDY LINDSAY is a world traveler. Which sounds impressive until you realize the worlds he visits exist only in his mind and on the pages of his novels. He claims to prefer this method of sightseeing because he can stop at any time, go to the kitchen, and indulge his ice cream addiction. When he isn’t busy making things up he likes going to movies with his wife to watch what other people have made up and plays board games with his children who are in the habit of making up the rules as they go along.

Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon is Randy’s third published book and the first in a series of stories that take place in the Battlemental universe. He switched to writing full time in 2011 and has had two novels published through Bonneville Books.

His journey as an author has been an exciting one, full of unexpected discoveries. One of those being the decision to focus more of his writing on middle-grade fantasy. The fact that the style feels more natural to Randy might be an indication that he is really just a kid at heart.

The second unexpected discovery was that he enjoyed marketing. Book signings, writing workshops, and podcasts about storytelling all gave him opportunities to discuss what he loves with others who share the same interest. This combined with the decision to write middle-grade stories led to his development of C.A.S.T. (a program intended to show children and teens how to incorporate storytelling into their everyday lives).

Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon by Randy Lindsay is a pre-teen/ middle school tale full of very interesting characters that are not all human. Imagination flows rampant in each chapter of this book. It keeps the level characteristic to children’s speech and behaviors.

When a group of children are approached by an interesting older person, they look at him as just that. However, they don’t expect that this old guy can change their life and the future of the universe in one conversation. Nor do they expect to say yes to his ridiculous idea for them to go on a journey or quest to save the universe. Their first instinct says that the guy is crazy, but soon the champions change their mind when they see a world disappear and they realize that it could have been earth and their families.

Now this group of children has to be brave, united and most of all friends to see the quest to its end.

I enjoy the telling and the characters of Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon by Randy Lindsay. It flows smoothly to the last page and each character is developed and grows flawlessly. It will be loved by many pre-teens and even younger kids.

Children’s author Karl Beckstrand, Winner: 2016 International Book Award

Karl, welcome to my blog
Thank you, Anna
Tell us where you were born
San Jose, CA
Beautiful place. What is the most difficult thing about being an author?
Taking time to market books!
Amen to that, my friend. Who has made the greatest difference for you as a writer?
Having time to write and getting my first publishing contract. (Reviews are a great help too!)
Great! Who or What inspired you to write this book?
It came to me after I’d visited many schools and observed no curriculum on earning a living.
How interesting… What is the name of your new book?
The Bridge of the Golden Wood: A Parable on How to Earn Money
Intriguing… Tell us more about it.
A child with a knack for solving problems helps some hungry fish and finds a treasure. Illustrated folk tale teaches the value of work and comes with money-making activities; ideas for businesses; and online resources (for ages 5 and up). 8.5″x8.5″, 26 pages, 530 words. I did some of the illustrations too.
Wow, that sounds awesome. What genre does your book fall under?
I’m marketing it to children, but I’m also going to put it under business books.
Here are my thoughts about the book
Review:
What an entertaining bookThe Bridge of the Golden Wood: A Parable on How to Earn Money is entertaining and educative at the same time. The story of a kids who help a fish, is a great idea to teach children how to earn money. I remember when I was young, and even just barely married, how much stress I had trying to find ideas of how to make extra money for our small family. In this book, you will find great ideas and all your children need to get into an entrepreneurial mindset. It will help you to teach your children the value of money and hard work. It will also guide your children to ask more questions and start thinking in a more down to earth manner. Most kids don’t know how to use their money or lack ideas and motivations to find and do something real to better themselves and their future. This book will help with this task. I think that it will be a great fit for all kids from a young age to adults alike. They are many adults who have no idea what to do with their future either, and this book will give them a little taste of reality. Great job Karl Beckstrand.

The amazing adventures of DragonMan

Monday, January 23rd, 2017

Intro
to Series
The
amazing story of DragonMan was born at the dawn of the 21st Century,
when the world, about to change forever, watched in disbelief as four
passenger airliners crashed, not only into buildings and a field in
Shanksville Pennsylvania, but into the American certainty that the
horrors of the outside world could not touch them at home.
It
was into this world that a new kind of superhero emerged, one for
whom the lines between good and evil are blurred. Is he friend? Or is
he foe? No one knows for sure. What they do know, however, is that as
a friend there is no one better.

DragonMan
– The Adventures of Luke Starr

Book
1
By
Ted Lazaris
Genre:
Fantasy

Teenager
Luke Starr appears to be living a rather dull uneventful life in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That is until fate and a nameless, faceless
mysterious dark force from a different plane of existence catapults
Luke into a series of wondrous adventures, adventures that will
change his life and those around him forever. Luke Starr, respected,
feared and hated by many as the one born to greatness, is suddenly
propelled with great swiftness into a nightmare, then forced to come
face to face with destiny. Is it all a dream? A wild imagination
perhaps? Or is this unimaginable journey into the unknown real?

You’re
about to find out when you embark on this unforgettable journey with
DragonMan. A fantasy adventure filled with wizardry and mystery that
carries you away on the wings of magic to bewitching lands, where
goblins dwell, wizards rule and witches still cast their evil spells.
The
story unfolds with the mood of impending danger set early on, as a
likable young teenage hero, Luke Starr, enters a mysterious realm of
Earth known as the mythical world of Spellville, by way of an eerie
portal in search of his kidnapped friends. But the journey for Luke
is not so much a mission of mercy as one of self-discovery. For
despite his humble midwest origins, Luke is no ordinary teenager.
Imbued with super powers following a ritualistic exchange of blood
with a clever dragon, Luke soon discovers the awesome legacy of his
birthright, a dark side of great strength and brutal fury and must
learn to accept the fact that he is known in this other world as The
Chosen One.

Still,
unquestionably human, he must come to grips with what he has now
become, the most violent force in nature, a dragon hybrid, a.k.a.
“DragonMan.” And ready or not, he is thrust into a
nightmarish life and death battle to try and save Planet Earth from
alien beings hell-bent on destruction, at the same time grappling
with his own fears and doubts while always in an inner conflict with
himself trying to keep the violent nature of the dragon in check,
making it a tough road to travel for this teenage boy of strong
morals beliefs.
In
a pace that never flags, Luke and an ancient dragon must now join
together in an epic struggle that is all neatly stitched together by
an intriguing cast of characters, both good and evil and
not-exactly-as-they-seem, wherein , a mysterious psychic and an
ominous stranger and alien attack on Earth keep the action rolling
until the climactic conclusion.

DragonMan
– The Poseidon Encounter
Book 2
In
Ted Lazaris’s first fantasy adventure novel, Dragonman, the
Adventures of Luke Starr, the reader was introduced to the likable
Luke and his seemingly normal way of life growing up in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin.
Luke
was portrayed as a quiet, average kid plagued by all the inherent
problems of the typical American teen: dealing with a crush on a girl
he’s too shy to approach, pesky sisters constantly poking their noses
into his business, bullies at school and exams to study for.
But
Luke, readers soon discovered, was burdened by a far greater weight
than any of his peers, as he struggled to come to terms with his
birthright as The Chosen One, savior of the distant world of
Spellville.

Not
only that, but, like hapless Peter Parker forced to juggle his
complex life as Spider-Man while pursuing his love interest and his
not-always-easy career, Luke had to learn to harness the enormous
powers of DragonMan, his super alter-ego, a persona that regrettably
did not come with an instruction manual.

In
this second, action comic-like installment, DragonMan and the
Poseidon Encounter, Luke seems to have come to terms with his legacy
and appears well in control of his super powers–which he will be
called upon to use this time around to save the world from an evil
demon who seeks to claim the souls of every human being on earth.

The
mood of impending danger is set from the very first page, when author
Ted Lazaris takes off his gloves to delivering a knock-out of an
opening scene: Five-year-old Bobby Blakely, running downstairs on the
morning of his birthday, finds not the hoped for brand new bicycle as
a gift, but rather an enormous blue whale that has somehow “washed
up” in the small lake on his parent’s isolated farm.

While
many consider the whale’s appearance a hoax, others believe it to be
a sign of impending Biblical doom. And it is enough to rouse Luke’s
suspicions that worse is about to happen–which it does. In a pace
that never flags, Poseidon Encounter unfolds in a complex thread of
differing tales, from an old-fashioned detective murder mystery to a
science fiction fantasy, all neatly stitched together by an
intriguing cast of characters, both good and evil and
not-exactly-as-they-seem.

An
imaginative writer, Lazaris blends magic, mysticism, religion and the
fast-paced action of the comic book world into a book that fans of
the first DragonMan tale will find hard to put down!

Ram’an has, to Enric’s great relief, left Anyueel again to return to his home country – which leaves him to figure out the challenge that Eryn still presents to him in more than one area of his life.
Eryn is restless, unnerved by the Order’s demands and her own urge to do something useful. Thus an expedition into the woods to teach the herb gatherers in the city how to provide her with acceptable goods seems just the thing to do to pass the time until the new healer’s place is ready for use. Ten peaceful days of collecting plants far away from the city. Or at least that’s the plan.

I
grew up in Melbourne, Australia in the 1970’s when entertainment came
in the form of sport or a good book. I chose both. An avid love
affair with my pinto horse ensued as well as a healthy diet of any
book I could get my hands on. English and history were always my
favourite subjects so logically I studied to become a Critical Care
Nurse! Books, particularly historical fantasy, have remained my
number one go to for a healthy retreat from the craziness of the real
world. After having a beautiful family and bringing a wonderful
nursing career to a close, I finally took the time to write down one
of the many stories that have been swirling around in my dreams for
years. My dreamscape is rich with fantasy that both inspires and
frightens me at the same time. I am pulling out those threads and
spinning them into the type of stories I love to read. I’m finally
letting out all my angels and demons.

Tell us about your writing –  What genre do you prefer to write?

I write science fiction/fantasy books. Very low on the science, very high on the fantasy. I have a giant-sized imagination that’s extruded from my brain like a slushie at the gas station, and such a genre is well-suited for me.

What books, stories, other publications that you’ve written are your personal favorites?

I don’t think I have a personal favorite, I’m happy with them all. Essentially, I write stories that I like to read. I’m fairly minimalist when it comes to floral descriptions, I’ve been taught plot is king, and I’m a really good plotter.

Anything new coming up?

The next book in the series is Book 10: The House of Bloodstein: Perlamum, followed by The House of Bloodstein: Mentralysis. I’m very excited for this series. It should be a lot of fun.

What gets your creative juices going? Do you write to a music, and do you want to share your playlist?

I love writing at night–that usually gets my juices flowing. When I listen to music, I usually listen to darker, more depressing sort of tunes. One of my usual soundtracks is “Bella Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus and the soundtrack to the Fear Effect.

What about you as a person? What do you do to relax? Favorite movies or tv shows? Hobbies?

I have all sorts of interests. I love caving, I love crawling in the deep unseen places. I also love wandering through huge, craggy buildings like hospitals and old hotels. I really can’t say what my favorite film would be–I have many that I love, and the list changes all the time. My current favorite TV show is “Vikings” on the History Channel though I also like “Longmire” on Netflicks as well.

What color would you wear if you had only one choice?

Red and Gray (I’m a Buckeye fan)

December 20, 2014

He remained perfectly still as the chains were wrapped around his body. The metal cooled the heated flesh of his bare chest. All around him echoed a cacophony of screams, bellows and stomping of feet that almost crushed him beneath its weight. The air tightened with the chains and a rush of collective exhilaration and nervousness swirled through his senses. He glanced quickly at the red-faced, muscular man standing beside him, who finished fastening the chains and stepped away.

He closed his eyes and drew a deep breath. And then he waited, anxiety pounding in his breast. The air was thick with heat and sweat and smoke, but he’d grown accustomed to it through the years, as with the rest of the ritual. The one thing he could never get used to, however, was the flip-flop in the pit of his stomach that occurred as the platform he stood on slowly lifted into the air, revealing him to the anxiously awaiting crowd that crushed nearer. Starving animals before a feast. He looked straight out, refused to look down, lest the vertigo take him.

How he hated heights.

He listened for the eerie orchestration of strings and organ that marked the beginning of his leisurely descent back to earth. The notes began with a rhythmic resonance that was almost conquered by impatient bellows that quickly turned to a roar of frenzied excitement. As the platform lowered, a muzzy sensation circled Dane’s mind and his throat felt as though his stomach had been hoisted up into it.

He held his breath in anticipation.

An amplified voice echoed over the din. “Ladies and Gentlemen. Through the misty storm they come. Battles rage and blood is spilled and tonight you will feel…the rage of the… Dark Myst!”
The crescendo of notes rose with the screams and soon the vast crowd, shrouded in the mist of machine smoke and lighting from the trusses above, came into view. The platform touched the stage simultaneously with a deafening blast of canon fire, blinding light and searing heat from the pyrotechnics.

Dane thrust his arms outward in an ostentatious display of feigned strength and released his long held breath as the chains fell free of his body. As he leaped forward the crowd crushed against the stage, nearly 20,000 screaming fans all at once a serried mass swarming towards him.

Tingles of excitement clawed at his spine, a feeling that never waned with the years. He ran to the front of the stage and grabbed up the microphone as Bruce struck the first hard note on his Strat. The music pounded out its heavy rhythm and the audience’s cries warred with its volume. Sharp beams of laser light cut a zigzag through the haze. Dane twirled around and his heart jumped.

Oh what fresh hell!

He was staring at himself!

The stage had been set up like a room in a lover’s palace; giant mirrors everywhere—behind, to the sides, even above, stretching as high as the trusses. Due to a severe snow squall the truck carrying an important part of the band’s stage set had gone off the road and gotten stuck. No one was injured, but the set had not arrived in time to be set up in the sold-out Target Center. Someone had decided the light show would look better reflected. Dane, however, was aghast. Not only was their stage set designed to coincide with most of their songs, but the effects of the colored lights continuously bouncing from mirror to mirror would inevitably result in the whole band plagued with a throbbing headache by concert’s end.

Their manager had to have approved this—someone had to have approved it. No one had told Dane! The mirrors must have been erected last moment. Everyone associated with the band knew how Dane hated mirrors. But now, no matter which direction he turned, he saw himself in his black costume and ragged-edged cloak; which portrayed him as the yin to the band’s yang. They were the mist, and he the dark storm.

To keep his attention from the mirrors, Dane fixed his gaze on the audience and the speckled glow from thousands of cell phone flashes, resembling a sparkling star-filled evening that stretched out before him. But he knew he would eventually have to turn around.
By the third song it became maddening, not able to dance around as he normally would for fear of what might be hidden in those mirrors. But, thankfully, half way through the song he spotted one of the girls he’d met the last time he was in town. At last, something to keep his mind and eyes busy. In the front row she stood, arms raised toward him. The bulldozing horde had her pressed against the stage, long auburn hair flittering about as she bobbed her head to the beat of the music. He smiled in her direction, despite his sudden dread at remembering the promise he’d made to her the year before. A promise—ashamedly—he had no intention of keeping.

He had never seen her before that night a year ago, so she hadn’t been a regular. Conquering new territory was always fun. She’d displayed the looks normally reserved by the group of girls who always seem to know just how to be chosen above others and handed backstage passes. This one, however, had taken a different approach. She had approached him on the floor of his hotel as he made his way to his room. Fortunately he had been alone—a rarity. He had invited her in. Ample breasts and a nice round bottom offset by a perfectly slender waist. Dane knew he would be having a good time that night.

She had wanted too much, however, a commitment he couldn’t give. Teasing him and denying him her favors until he’d made the vow. What else was there to do? And so he had said exactly what she wanted to hear. And, as naïve as she was, she had believed him. He couldn’t, after all, say no. Not when she lay there in his hotel bed displaying all her luscious charms. But he couldn’t keep his promise, either. There were plenty of women in countless towns, women the band’s crew knew were his type. Women who would be offered passes just so he could meet them, drink with them, bed them. And there would be more waiting in the next town after that.

Now, a pass with the name of a local radio as sponsor dangled around her neck. So, she had won backstage passes this time. There would be no avoiding her tonight. What would he say to her? He could not even recall her name. As her fiery glare burned through him, he absentmindedly turned away, catching Bruce’s smug grin as he looked from the girl to Dane. He mouthed the words “there she is,” as he switched guitars with an assistant for the next set of songs.

Dane smirked, shook his head at his friend, then strutted to the other side of the stage as the next song began—one of the band’s trademark tunes that he wrote about a medieval land of lords and knights. He wielded a sword, one of many from his collection, and proceeded to dance around in choreographed mock swordplay as the hired orchestra played their bit.

At this point, his disappointment surged that the integral element of their regular stage set had not arrived. The video wall depiction of a castle and rolling green hills was installed. However, mirrors now replaced the large faux-stone steps that were to lead to the balcony above the stage, giving Dane the appearance of riding atop one of two red-eyed dragons that should, at that moment, be gazing menacingly down at the crowd, smoke, laser and fire effects erupting from the eyes and fanged mouths. Those that came for the show would be fervently disappointed.

During Bruce’s brief guitar solo near mid-song, Dane closed his eyes for a moment and raised the sword high, drawing in the deep odor of sweat and heat. Machine-created fog crept along the stage and curled around his feet like a chill mist in a graveyard. The lights were so dim he could scarce see even the front row of the audience as the laser lights sliced through the stadium and across his body like sharp-edged blades.

In accordance with his routine, and without second thought, he twirled around—and was suddenly staring right into one of the tall mirrors that littered the stage. The lights brightened. His craggy-hemmed cloak billowed as he spun from the ghastly reflection of his own sweat-soaked face only to catch the same image in the mirror beside that one. His gut wrenched and he tried to turn away, back to the front of the stage, back to the audience. But he froze as movement caught his eye and when he turned his head, she was there—the “Mirror Lady.” His illusion. His own delusion.

Onstage.
As real to him as his own reflection.

No! Not here!

Her thigh-length ginger hair was loose, rather than pulled back in the usual braid. The shining tresses poured over her shoulders like a rushing waterfall and cascaded down a beautiful gown of burgundy velvet that hugged her slim form. The tears in her golden eyes told a tale of sadness that wrenched at his heart, and he felt himself take an involuntary step forward. More familiar to him than Martha or Lance or Sir Kori, the sight of the “Mirror Lady” twisted his gut, a tornado rampaging through him, a tangled enrapture of perplexity and fear, love and pain—as if he had known her for more years than his life was long. And that familiarity drove him somewhere beyond her presence in some glass.
His dilemma with the redhead in the front row disappeared. The girls he’d met in the past or would meet in the future no longer mattered. It was this stranger, this illusion. She alone meant everything—and she scared the hell out of him. But deeper than fear lie an unbearable urge to leap into the mirror and gather her into his arms.

Protective impulses tugged at him relentlessly and he was suddenly frightened not of her but for her. Terror seized his heart, and refused to let go, pounding through him harder than the music that continued to fill the stadium, confusing him profoundly. Passionate emotions thrashed at his brain and his head ached with the need to bring them to the surface. But he couldn’t. A mental barrier walled off the needs screaming for release. Why couldn’t he just go to her; feel for her the love he’d been missing his entire life?
Behind him, the glass’ surface reflected a flurry of activity; lambent light bounced from one mirror to the next, heightening the pain in his head. The small section of audience visible moved and swayed, their images like dancing ghosts in the dark mist of the stadium. Stephan’s long strawberry hair swayed as he bobbed his head up and down while he plucked away at his bass. He hadn’t seen her. At the time Dane didn’t think anyone else saw her, but her form was as solid in the mirror as was his own, as she had been in every mirror throughout his life.

Concentration became impossible. He faltered, his voice cracked and he missed the chorus altogether. Familiar with the music, the mistake must have been quite obvious to the crowd. But he couldn’t turn from that damn mirror.

Dane tried to force his mind back to the song when a searing bolt of pain sliced through his head. The clank of the sword and the microphone sounded loud to his ears, even above the music, as they dropped from his hands and crashed to the stage. Feedback screeched from the monitors and the music stopped. The burden of emotion and conflict pressed him downward and, like Alice, he found himself falling. Down. Down. The spotlights swirled like shooting stars and agony screamed through his shoulder as he hit the hard stage floor.

The fog consumed him.

The stadium went dead silent. Bruce and Stephan rushed towards him. Adrian leapt from behind his drums. Road crew members and strangers circled above. The audience pressed closer to the stage, security guards frantically tried to hold them back. Their lips moved, their hands pounded the stage. He saw them all, yet he heard nothing. And then he was forced into a vacuum of darkness.

Even hope has its price

Wednesday, January 4th, 2017
The scarecrow’s evil knows no bounds …

Having failed to save her friends from the scarecrow’s malevolence, Sullyan plunges into despair. Reen holds all the aces and nothing now, it seems, can prevent him from wreaking utter destruction. Nevertheless, she must try one last time, cast her life away if necessary, to avenge her loved ones. She marshals her forces and marches on Bordenn.

Yet Reen has usurped the power of a Master Artesan, and knows everything Robin once knew. Luring Sullyan to Bordenn is his only desire. The scarecrow squats in his lair, avid for Sullyan’s power, holding one final bargaining chip to force her into surrender. Her only glimmer of hope lies in a vague reference contained in the ancient diary of a long-dead Supreme Master—that, and a whispered message from a familiar spirit.
Yet even hope has its price, and life demands life in return.

1.      What inspired your book?

King’s Envoy, my first novel and the start of the entire triple-trilogy Artesans of Albia series, was inspired by a 1970s children’s TV show called “Tarot, Ace of Wands.” Tarot was a magician who used his special talents to solve crime, and this got me wondering what it would be like to be born with a special talent or power, especially if there was no one to teach you how to use it. This thought triggered a little scene in my head, which became the scene where my main male character, Taran, meets Major Sullyan for the first time.

2.      How do you spend your free time?

I have two rescue Lurcher dogs, Milly and Milo, so I love going for country walks. I also love gardening and have a large collection of unusual cacti. Singing is another love of mine and I have written and recorded some folk-style songs that appear in my books. They can be found on my website, www.caspeace.com

3.      What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

Confidence that my writing is any good. I always write for myself, so having the confidence to show it to other people is a struggle. I’m always surprised when complete strangers like or identify with my writing, and that gives me a huge boost. All the lovely reviews I’ve received for my Artesans series, plus emails from fans, helped me overcome that initial lack of confidence. Now I just write what I want and don’t worry so much about whether it’s “good” right from the start. I know I can always edit and improve.

4.      When did you first realize you were an author?

I never intended to become an author, I was only writing as a hobby, so I guess it was when I decided I had to take the plunge and show my first “real” piece of writing to my husband. He read it and really loved it, despite not being a fan of fantasy novels, and that gave me the confidence to send it out to agents and publishers. Although I received many rejections before finding my first publisher, I also received much encouragement and many personally-written comments. That’s when I realized these writing professionals were treating me as a serious author.

Many thanks for your interest – I hope you will enjoy my Artesans series!
