La Patron

by: Ceado Mile Failte

She was the Goddess and she gave him a mission

He would accept this task without hesitation

The Goddess gave him her blessing and full support

And handpicked the only true one as his consort

He was as imperious as a man could be

In upholding the standards of the old decree

So when someone or something quietly changed the rules

He reacts fearless and gathers required tools

She was the one promised to him by the Goddess

An unsurpassable treasure trove of promise

Whatever he needs she would without doubt provide

They’d live together and rule the world side by side

The mating call was answered and wishes fulfilled

Their first litter of pups left him angry, but thrilled

Her life was stirring and spiraled out of control

But they found their love was strong and learned to console

When the enlarged wolves den grew stronger and stronger

She realizes she’s not weak any longer

Their combined forces take on the mighty challenge

And with the help of the Goddess they find balance

They want the entire nation to celebrate

That the great gift from the Goddess will dedicate

Their reign in providing harmony and unity

And love and commitment for the community

WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S POWER

Thursday, April 20th, 2017
WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S POWER
by Lisa Olech
PUB DATE: 4/4/2017
Genre: Historical Romance
Never underestimate the power of a pirate . . .
Captain James Steele is duty bound to capture the privateer Scarlet Night and bring her rebellious crew to England to hang. Then he will leave his majesty’s service, make an upstanding marriage, and join the landed gentry. But the winds of fate are blowing the straitlaced commander utterly off course.
Once aboard, James comes face to face with a pirate boy who is in reality fierce, desperate—and gorgeous—Samantha Christian, on the run from a sadistic Virginia plantation owner. With her identity unbound, the good captain dutifully takes her under his personal command, whereupon decorum goes out the porthole. But while his heart is lost to Samantha by the time they reach England, her noose still awaits. Now James’s sense of duty will be severely tested. As for Samantha, she has a plan, and a duty, of her own . . .

Let’s Talk about Pirates!

Let’s start by dressing the part. Most pirates’ clothing was stolen from their prey. Captains picked the nicest and most fashionable garments so everyone would know, “Hey, look at me, I’m the Captain!” There are reports that captains fearing capture would rush below deck and change into something less fancy so they could blend into their crew and receive an easier punishment.

How about an earring? There are a host of reasons and theories regarding pirates wearing earrings. Some believe an earring marked the first time the sailor crossed the equator, or sailed the vicious waters around Cape Horn. Others claim that sailors believed precious metals pierced through their earlobes actually improved their eyesight. There is another theory that the gold and silver was to pay for their funerals. With their names and home ports engraved within the hoop, if they washed up on shore, their bodies could be sent home. And yet another reason for an earring is to hang waxed earplugs from in case you were a gunner and too close to those exploding cannons! Me…I just think they made those seafaring bad boys a bit more rakish.

There is some debate regarding eye patches. Yes, there’s evidence of pirates losing arms, legs, and eyes. But some believe that eye patches were worn so pirates could keep one eye adjusted to seeing in the dark found below deck. Black Beard had a wooden leg, but it wasn’t due to a 10lb. cannon ball removing his limb. It was due to diabetes. If a pirate lost a leg in battle, most times they never survived the injury, and it certainly ended their career. It is true that Captain James Hook did have an iron hook that replaced his missing hand, however. Here I thought that was only Peter Pan fiction!

Speaking of fiction… there is little evidence of anyone ‘walking the plank.’ If pirates want you tossed into the water, over the rail ye went! Of course, there were more gruesome forms of punishment. Flogging, marooning, keelhauling, and hanging…by various parts of your body…from the highest yardarm!

Also, there’s no record of a pirate having a parrot as a pet. Cats were common aboard ship to keep the mice and rat population at bay, (FYI…white cats were considered bad luck.) but parrots were seen more for the money they would bring than for a colorful shoulder accessory.

Not all pirates were cutthroats. In fact, they were fairly civilized. Rules were strictly followed regarding fighting amongst the crew, gambling onboard, compensation should you be wounded or killed. Everyone received a fair share according to rank and decisions were made by democratic vote. Stealing from a crewmember was a major no no.

There were ‘gentlemen’ pirates who were well known for treating their crews and captives well. Stede Bonnet was one of these gentlemen pirates. He was a wealthy plantation owner when he decided to buy his own ship and take to the sea. It’s rumored that a nagging wife was his motivation to become a pirate, or a mid-life crisis! Black Bart Roberts gave his musicians Sundays off.

Being a pirate was a decent way to make a living. In fact, a lot of sailors signed on to pirate crews because the Navy’s pay checks just didn’t go very far in the 1600’s. Long Ben Avery wasn’t a pirate for very long, but made the richest haul and retired less than a year after he started. And speaking of richest treasures, it is said, Oliver Levasseur had treasure estimated into the billions. When he was captured and brought to be hung, he pulled a necklace from his neck and threw it into the crowd. It contained a cryptogram of 17 lines. He shouted “Find my treasure, the one who may understand it!” Treasure hunters are still trying to ‘understand’ it.

Some pirates were brutal, vicious barbarians, however. Black Beard used to stick lit lengths of rope under the brim of his hat so smoke would circle his head and his prey would believe he was possessed. Francis l’Olonnais cut out a prisoners heart and ate it in order to get the other prisoners to cooperate. His crew deserted soon after. There’s pirate crazy…then there’s pirate ‘l’Olonnais’ crazy!

And of course, I can’t possibly forget to mention all those incredible, bad-ass, ‘tough-as-hardtack’ women who fought as pirates throughout the golden age and beyond. Anne Bonney, Mary Read, Grace O’Malley, Rachel Wall (the only female pirate from New England—and the last pirate hung in Boston Common.), and my personal favorite, Ching Shih. Ching Shih was the most powerful of all pirate queens. After being pulled from a life of prostitution to marry, and her husband’s subsequent death a short three years later, Ching Shih became one of the most feared female pirates of her time. She terrorized the Chinese coast and amassed a huge fleet of more than a fifteen hundred ships and captained more than 70,000 men. She was very fond of beheadings, and deserters who just wouldn’t listen to reason…they saved their heads, but lost their ears!

I wonder what happened to all those earrings?

Lisa A. Olech is an artist/writer living in her dream house nestled among the lakes in New England. She loves getting lost in a steamy book, finding the perfect pair of sexy shoes, and hearing the laughter of her men. Being an estrogen island in a sea of testosterone makes her queen. She believes in ghosts, silver linings, the power of a man in a tuxedo, and happy endings.

“Gloria!”
George’s
voice penetrated her thoughts.
His
dark eyes held a glint of amusement. “You dropped your reticule. Was it on
purpose?” he chided as though talking to a child. He picked up her property, brushed
off a trace of mud from the snow and soot tracked in on the plank flooring, and
then handed it back to her. “Are you testing me?”

She
looped the drawstrings of the bag over her wrist and refrained from answering.
He was only teasing her. It hadn’t been on purpose at all. And not a test. Of
course, George would pick it up. She had no doubt as to his attentiveness or
chivalry toward her. He never dropped things, never faltered. He made her feel
at once treasured like a princess and wanting like a child in the same moment.

damaged emigre to the coastal town of Avon on North Carolina’s Outer
Banks, likes to mind his own business and isn’t any kind of detective
– until he’s forced to become one by extraordinary circumstances. On
the verge of losing his modest waterfront home to an unscrupulous
developer, Ketch stumbles onto the scene of a crime that might expose
the perpetrator of an unsolved murder and enable him to save not only
his own home, but also the similarly threatened bohemian boatyard
community he’s inexorably drawn into. And in case Plan A fails, he’s
hard at work on a Plan B that’s both laudable and pitiable. Together
with his loyal dog, a salty charter boat captain, the sketchy
denizens of the boatyard, and an alluring scuba diving instructor who
may or may not have a hidden agenda, Ketch struggles to make sense of
his new reality, while trying to save some of the things that really
matter along the way.

Storm
Ketchum, a damaged emigre to Hatteras Island on North Carolina’s

cult-like coven of modern-day Roanoke Island witches when a relative
of his paramour meets an untimely end on church property. Is the High
Priestess of the Croatoan Covenant Church really in contact with the
departed spirits of the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island? Are the
members of her church really from both this world and the next? Or is
she just a con artist preying on gullible Wiccan acolytes – and is
she a killer? A desire to provide closure for the family drives Ketch
to once again call on his amateur sleuthing skills to conjure up
answers to these and other questions, in the process risking the
physical and spiritual well-being of both himself and the one he
loves.

Ancient pact between mankind, Heaven, and Hell has been broken

Obsidian
Son
The
Nate Temple Chronicles Book 1
By
Shayne Silvers
Genre:
Supernatural Thriller

A
city that doesn’t believe in magic. Bloodthirsty weredragons. Good
thing this reckless playboy has superpowers…
It’s
been said that monsters cry when a good man goes to war. But they
should run screaming like little school girls when that man is
secretly a wizard, and maybe not necessarily good…
Nate
Temple’s all-consuming quest to avenge his parents is temporarily
put on hold when shape-shifting dragons invade St. Louis. And perhaps
cow-tipping the Minotaur for answers might not have been Nate’s
smartest opening move, because now every flavor of supernatural thug
from our childhood nightmares is gunning for him. Nate learns that
the only way to save his city from these creatures is to murder his
best friend…
Nate’s
choice will throw the world and his own conscience into cataclysmic
chaos: avenge his parents or become a murderer to save his city.
Because to do either, he’s going to have to show the world that
magic is very, very real, and that monsters are very, very hungry…
To survive, he might just need to take a page from the book, How to
Win Friends and Influence Monsters.

you like Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, or Patrick Rothfuss, you will

A
Wizard, an Angel, and a Horseman of the Apocalypse walk into a bar…
The
ancient pact between mankind, Heaven, and Hell has been broken. And
this upstart wizard’s quest for vengeance may have just kicked off
Armageddon. So, time for a drink… or maybe two.
Already
plagued with sinister night terrors that could qualify him as a
card-carrying psychopathic insomniac, Nate can barely even manage to
put his pants on in the morning, let alone pick teams for the
Apocalypse.
But
when he’s framed as a demon sympathizer, condemned by the Armies of
Heaven, and hunted down by both his allies and the Four Horsemen,
this wizard doesn’t think it can get any worse…
Then
they take away his magic. And a wizard without magic stands no chance
against the forces of Heaven and Hell…

The
Brothers Grimm – legendary supernatural assassins – have escaped
their prison, and their first day in St. Louis could be Nate Temple’s
last…
Sharing
a beer with Death – one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse –
really put a few things into perspective for this foul-mouthed,
billionaire wizard. Like finally strapping on the boots to propose to
his girlfriend.
But
assassination contracts have a way of putting wedding plans on hold.
Perhaps permanently. And with the entire wedding party on the
bloodthirsty Grimm’s hit-list, and his family fortune in jeopardy,
Nate realizes they can’t run and they can’t hide. So, time to do
magic and stuff…
But
with every flavor of supernatural thug teaming up to help the Grimms,
Nate realizes that friends have become enemies and enemies have
become friends, and he’s forced to cross lines that are better left
uncrossed.
When
magic, claws, and teeth dance to the song of war, the only thing left
to learn is who lives and who dies. And if Nate can live with the
consequences.
No

Pit of Vipers or Shadow of the Raven

Shadow
of the Raven
Sons
of Kings Volume 1
by
Millie Thom
Genre:
Epic Fantasy

The life of Eadwulf, ten-year old son
of the Mercian king, is changed forever when his family is betrayed
to the Danes by his treacherous uncle. In a devastating Danish raid,
his father is killed, his mother raped, and along with his tutor and
childhood friend, Eadwulf is captured and taken to the Danish lands
to be sold as a slave.
As a slave in Jarl Ragnar’s village,
Eadwulf’s life is hard, his days unbearably long. But on the return
of Ragnar’s eldest son, Bjorn, from his summer raids, his life
begins to change. Eadwulf spends the next few years aboard Bjorn’s
beloved dragonship, sailing to places he’d never dreamed of,
trading and raiding. And although still a slave, he becomes a
well-respected member of Bjorn’s closely knit crew. Yet through it
all, the smouldering desire for revenge on those who destroyed his
family refuses to abate.
Eadwulf’s story plays out against the
backdrop of events unfolding in Wessex in the face of increasing
Danish raids. Alfred, the youngest son of the Wessex king, faces
family tragedies from an early age, losing first his mother, then his
beloved sister when she is married to the new Mercian king: Eadwulf’s
treacherous uncle. At his father’s court and the successive courts
of his elder brothers, he learns the weighty art of kingship. And,
like Eadwulf, he learns the harshest lesson of all … that a trusted
kinsman can so easily turn traitor.

Excerpt from Shadow of the Raven

The snorting and stomping of the horses was the first indication that anything was amiss, then the panicked shouts; the reek of smoke assailing their nostrils only moments later. They hurtled to the stable door, aware that it could take barely minutes for wood and thatch to burn to a crisp, and reeled in horror. Searing waves of heat smacked into them. The hall was ablaze, its heavy thatch ready to collapse; angry red flames lashed at the wood-planked walls. People collided with each other, precious water slopping from their pails as they raced to quell the towering flames. Yapping, terrified dogs added to the pandemonium.

Sigehelm crossed himself, uttering a prayer for anyone trapped inside the blazing hall. ‘Eadwulf; Aethelnoth; stay close to me,’ he ordered, grabbing Aethelnoth’s arm as the boy turned to lead the horses to safety. ‘The stables are far enough away to be safe for now. If need be, I’ll loose the horses when you’re both safe with Morwenna. But may the Lord help these other buildings. The kitchens will probably soon be ablaze. We must hurry. I must help to fetch water.’

It was then that the Danes struck.

Yowling men stampeded through the palisade’s main gate, their entrance unchallenged as people fought to control the blaze. Yet they had needed neither to burn down nor scale the palisade wall. The gates must have already been open – despite Thrydwulf’s insistence that they be kept locked and guarded.

Frenzied screams escalated. Sigehelm yanked Eadwulf and Aethelnoth behind the kitchens and, stooping low, they headed for the women’s bower. Suddenly Eadwulf froze. Burgred stood outside the bower’s door – and something about that was so very wrong.

‘Eadwulf, in God’s name, child, we cannot stand and stare. We must reach your mother and try to flee from the manor.’

‘Burgred’s a traitor, Sigehelm! He was meeting them in the woods. And he must have started the fire: the hall was ablaze before the Danes came through the gate. He must have opened that for them too. . .’

Sons
of Kings Volume 2

The ninth century story of King Alfred
of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia continues to unfold against the ever
increasing threat of Danish raids. After years as a slave to the
Danes, Eadwulf has returned to his Mercian homeland and settles to a
life of calm domesticity, marred only by his incessant desire for
revenge. His frequent absences from his new home, connected to his
past life, threaten to destroy the relationships he has fostered and
alienate the family he has come to love.
In Wessex, Alfred, now a young man, has
spent his childhood at the successive courts of his father and four
older brothers, learning the skills of diplomacy and leadership.
Before too long those skills will be put to the test…
The Danish invasion of the Anglo-Saxon
kingdoms is merciless and relentless. Every year more Norse ships
come to join their comrades in a quest to plunder for wealth and gain
control over the people. The Danes take kingdom after kingdom and
Alfred and his brother Aethelred wait with baited breath for them to
set their sights on Wessex. By 869, their worst fear is realised.
And Eadwulf follows vital leads to the
objects of his revenge.

Excerpt from Pit of Vipers

Preparing to do battle…

Alfred moved along his own front line, noting that most of the fyrd carried spears, though the pitchforks and staffs amongst them would not fare well against the heavy swords and battle axes of the foe. Body armour was light. Some wore leather jerkins, others thinly quilted gambesons, and most heads were protected by a leather helmet. Better than nothing, he thought grimly, acutely aware of the protective qualities of his own mailshirt and helm.

‘On my order, the front line becomes an impenetrable wall of tightly locked shields,’ he shouted above the clamour for the benefit of the new recruits. ‘Shields overlap, left over right.’ His arm swung round to the sides. ‘You five men at each end of the lines – and those at the back – will do likewise if need be. And should a man in the line in front of you fall, you step over his body and take his place…

‘You’ll be fighting for your lives, not mourning the dead!’ he snapped at the appalled faces, ‘as well as the lives of the men around you. Thrust and stab through the gaps between the shields with your weapons. Aim for exposed flesh – face, legs, even spaces between armour covering chest, belly, or groin. Your purpose is to kill or maim.’ He swept the men with a commanding stare. ‘We fight as an ordered unit, and no one leaves that formation unless the wall becomes irrevocably destroyed. Only then do we resort to individual combat. Is all of that clear?’

Alfred took his position at the centre of the front line, between two experienced warriors, Ealdormen Wybert and Unwine.

The racket abruptly ceased. Warriors stood rigid, muscles flexed for the opening strike, the onslaught of spears and javelins. But no missiles flew. Instead, the two men Alfred had identified as ‘kings’ stepped forward a pace.

‘So, great king, we meet at last,’ the less burly of the two yelled, his eyes scanning the Saxon forces to locate the Saxon king. ‘We were not introduced at Nottingham. Pity, I like to know the face of my enemy. Wherever you’re hiding in the midst of your piss-poor army, I urge you to look closely at what you confront. We are double your number and hold the higher ground. Surrender – or by nightfall your carcases will feed the scavengers!’

The Undead Must Die by Penny Brojacquie is comprised of episodes one and two in the first book of the Order Of The Black Rose Series. It is great reading for anyone who likes adventure with a good plot. The setting is an island in Europe across the Mediterranean sea. Penny gives you a great idea of what it looks like there.

The story tells of an ancient people that is devoted to saving mankind from their own wrongdoings. Like in a great tale, there are other ancient people in it too, but these are the evil doers. The Order of the Black Rose are the good people and they are running out of time to save mankind from becoming mindless zombies with extraordinary physical powers. It takes one bite from an infected person to contaminate another, and there are many waiting to be unleashed on the cities of mankind.

The Order of the Black Rose knows where the paper containing the antidote recipe is and they also know there is only one person who can decipher it, Floriana. Floriana doesn’t know anything about The Order of the Black Rose and, because of the lack of time, they have to kidnap her to keep her from falling into the wrong hands. She can’t believe what they want, because their tale is hard to swallow and she is just an art student; how is she supposed to save the world? To see if she helps or not, you will have to read the book. The Undead Must Die by Penny Brojacquie is a wisp of fresh air in this genre and I enjoyed the clean contemporary story a lot.

Rock, Texas, spending her time reading, collecting, and selling
books—at least, the ones that don’t get eaten first by her
father’s pet armadillo. Running the family bookstore is a demanding
job, but solving murders on the side can be flat out dangerous…
The Book Barn is more than just a shop,
it’s a part of the community—and Charli is keeping busy with a
fundraising auction and the big rodeo event that’s come to town.
That includes dealing with the Texas-sized egos of some celebrity
cowboys, including Dalton Hibbs, a blond, blue-eyed bull rider who
gets overly rowdy one night with the local hairdresser . . . and soon
afterward, disappears into thin air.
Dalton’s
brother also vanished seven years ago—and Charli is thrown about
whether Dalton is a villain or a victim. After a close call with an
assailant wielding a branding iron (that plays havoc with her hair),
and some strange vandalism on her property, she’s going to have to
team up with the sheriff to untangle this mystery, before she gets
gored . . .

Three career paths resonated for Kym
Roberts during her early childhood: detective, investigative
reporter, and . . .nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside
when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she
couldn’t deny. In high school her path was forged when she took her
first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the
lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no
stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement. Kym followed
her dream and became a detective who fulfilled her desire to be an
investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to
sergeant, Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired
from the job reluctantly when her husband dragged her kicking and
screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name,
at least in her head. Visit her on the web at kymroberts.com.
