the dark and twisted land of Escher after wishing himself away from an
ill-fated family holiday.

headstrong resistance fighter, Jasper, James is taken on an adventure through a

Born and raised in Hampshire, I spent most of my childhood dreaming up random adventures.

I left the sunny south coast to study Graphic Communication in Bath, where I fell in love with the rolling Somerset hills when I wasn’t walking up them.
Returning to Hampshire 6 years later, after meeting my now wife, Claire, I enjoy a quieter life, walking in the New Forest and relaxing with my wonderful wife and fluffy cat Molly.
I have always enjoyed telling stories, more often than not in visual form, either in films or animations. However, the idea of Escher was too big for me to do visually by myself so I picked up a pen and started writing.
Having written one novel, I am now keen to tell more stories of Escher, while at the same time expressing my imagination with my art.

My Review:

The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance is a great story for middle grade kids. However, it does start out rather depressing as James, the main character, goes through some rough times at home and school. As the characters get introduced and the story moves along, things go from bad to worse and keep you glued to the pages. You will find a great array of stone brutes, goblins, and animal creatures mingled with the humans between its pages.

The story starts on the last day of school when James has to endure bullying once again. The next day, he is going on vacation with his family of five; his parents, his younger brother and baby sister. The trip is quite long and they have to traverse two or three countries before they get there. His father has a short fuse and he, being the oldest, gets pinned with many things. He is having a terrible time until…he wakes up in a weird land with animal creatures that act like humans where everyone thinks that he is special and will help them free their land from darkness. But he is a nobody, how can they expect him to save them?

The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance, is a well-done tale with all kinds of fascinating stories, all with James in pursuit of his family and later trying to save Escher. I enjoyed the tale and the telling, and I believe many elementary kids and pre-teens will make The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance, their favorite. Great job.

The Origins of Benjamin Hackett and the family secret

Saturday, March 18th, 2017
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett
by
Gerald M. O’Connor
Genre:
Coming Of Age

All
families have secrets. Most go untold…

In the summer of
‘96, Benjamin Hackett has come of age, technically. And in the
midst of the celebratory hangover, his world is whipped out from
under his feet. His parents have finally shared their lifelong secret
with him; he’s adopted.
At the age of 18, the boy still has
some growing up to do, and with the help of JJ, his loquacious
consigliore and bodyguard, he embarks on an adventure that’ll put
to bed a lifetime of lies.
Over the course of five days, they
find themselves caught up in the darker side of Cork. But when they
sweep through the misfits blocking their way and finally discover the
truth of it…now that’s the greatest shock of all.

The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

is a tender tale of heartache and displacement told through a wry and
courageous voice. Set in Ireland, it’s a timely reminder that the
world hasn’t moved on just as fast as we fancy. Now, in this
emotionally charged story, Gerald M. O’Connor explores conditioned
guilt and its consequences in a country still hiding from the sins of
its past.

O’Connor’s
book draws on a time when the Catholic Church in Ireland would
quietly take children from mothers in convents and Magdalene
Laundries and deposit them into new homes, making it nearly
impossible for these kids to find their real parents. Attempts by
children to find their birth parents were often blocked by a dark web
of secrecy and bureaucracy that, in many ways, still continues to
haunt the country today.
Brimming
with unfathomable escapades, a motley crew of characters and a
healthy serving of Irish humor, O’Connor’s book is steeped in
Irish culture told in the inimitable Corkman’s brogue. Set in a
time before the chaos of modern digital culture,
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

takes a step back, allowing space for readers to escape and think
about the realities of growing up in a family founded on a lie. In
his stylish debut, O’Connor shows an amazing ability to paint
heartbreak and longing that will keep readers thinking about
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

long after they finish the story.

Praise For
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett
“‘The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett’ by Gerald O’Connor is a raucous and
riotous coming-of-age story that is brutal, tender and hilarious.”

Paul
D. Brazill, author of A Case of Noir and Guns of Brixton

“O’Connor
doles out killer dialogue that adds oodles of character to this
hero’s journey. Told with the lilt and panache of Joseph O’Connor
and Dermot Bolger in their novels of the ‘90s, Gerald O’Connor is
the new and improved voice we’ve been waiting for.”

Gerard
Brennan, author of Undercover and Wee Rockets

“Visceral
writing that inherits a long Irish tradition. O’Connor’s
narrative contains sharp characterization, and has an assured voice,
while dramatizing conditioned guilt with humor and style.”

Richard Godwin, author of Apostle Rising, Mr. Glamour, One Lost
Summer and others
“If
you’re expecting the usual coming-of-age tale, you’re in for a
big shock. This is a tale big on heart and one which the author,
Gerald O’Connor, has hied religiously to the advice of Harry Crews
for writers, to ‘leave out the parts readers skip.’ None of those
parts remain in these pages. An auspicious debut!”

Can a human heart overcome a demon soul?

When soul-eating demons overrun his world, Kaelis, a young seraph warrior, uses the Queen’s ring to open a portal in space and flee with the infant heir to the throne, landing on earth. Unbeknownst to him, the demon leader, Nsark, follows through the portal, determined to devour the soul of every last seraph, especially the Queen’s heir. After Kaelis hides the baby, Nsark creates the ultimate weapon by fathering a half-human, half-demon: a soul-stealer’s child.

Sixteen years later, an awkward teen named James struggles to fit in with his peers. In a last-ditch effort, he joins the school play, where he meets Lucy. Something deep draws them together, and their friendship reveals their hidden pasts: one is an angel, one is half-demon. Lucy and James find themselves pulled into an age-old war between their peoples. Hunted by relentless enemies, and grappling with deep-seated instincts and strange new powers, they must fight for their lives, their souls, and each other.

Snippet:
His rich baritone voice crescendoed in a dark laugh, pulling her gaze back to the stage. Backlit by slanted beams of light, his black curls gleamed. Gray eyes blazed so bright they were almost silver. High, sharp cheekbones soared above full, powerful lips. The cape draped over his broad shoulders, following his tapered form to the floor. Something fierce and powerful seethed inside him like a midnight storm. Was it just acting? Or was the role of Dracula opening a window into what was really inside him? Acting or not, something about James called to her.

RANDY LINDSAY is a world traveler. Which sounds impressive until you realize the worlds he visits exist only in his mind and on the pages of his novels. He claims to prefer this method of sightseeing because he can stop at any time, go to the kitchen, and indulge his ice cream addiction. When he isn’t busy making things up he likes going to movies with his wife to watch what other people have made up and plays board games with his children who are in the habit of making up the rules as they go along.

Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon is Randy’s third published book and the first in a series of stories that take place in the Battlemental universe. He switched to writing full time in 2011 and has had two novels published through Bonneville Books.

His journey as an author has been an exciting one, full of unexpected discoveries. One of those being the decision to focus more of his writing on middle-grade fantasy. The fact that the style feels more natural to Randy might be an indication that he is really just a kid at heart.

The second unexpected discovery was that he enjoyed marketing. Book signings, writing workshops, and podcasts about storytelling all gave him opportunities to discuss what he loves with others who share the same interest. This combined with the decision to write middle-grade stories led to his development of C.A.S.T. (a program intended to show children and teens how to incorporate storytelling into their everyday lives).

Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon by Randy Lindsay is a pre-teen/ middle school tale full of very interesting characters that are not all human. Imagination flows rampant in each chapter of this book. It keeps the level characteristic to children’s speech and behaviors.

When a group of children are approached by an interesting older person, they look at him as just that. However, they don’t expect that this old guy can change their life and the future of the universe in one conversation. Nor do they expect to say yes to his ridiculous idea for them to go on a journey or quest to save the universe. Their first instinct says that the guy is crazy, but soon the champions change their mind when they see a world disappear and they realize that it could have been earth and their families.

Now this group of children has to be brave, united and most of all friends to see the quest to its end.

I enjoy the telling and the characters of Battlementals: Quest for the Harmonicon by Randy Lindsay. It flows smoothly to the last page and each character is developed and grows flawlessly. It will be loved by many pre-teens and even younger kids.

Tutankhamen Speaks a book for reluctant readers

Monday, October 3rd, 2016

Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archaeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. But, Tutankhamen Speaks isn’t a story about the lost scrolls. It’s about the story written down on those ancient scrolls: Tutankhamen’s story.

Reviews:
“A delightful way to bring history
to children.”
“We are using this as resource for
world cultures for home school.”
“What I liked about this book was
that it gives a glimpse into the everyday life of Tut, before and after his
rise to Pharaoh. It was like a fly on the wall peek at his life without it just
being part of a much larger plot.”
And what a tale
it is! King Tut tells us his entire life story from when he was a boy and not
yet acknowledged as heir to the throne of Egypt, through his father’s death and
his own ascension to the throne; we learn of his love for Ankhesenpaaten, whom
he married, the sadness they experienced at the loss of a child, and the
politics and hierarchy of ancient Egypt with its court intrigue.”

The Magician’s Dream by LeAnn Mathis ***** (needs done)

Sunday, October 2nd, 2016

My Review ***** stars:

Maddie and Franklin have been seeing each other in a world where magic started for a good while. They are best friends and also partners as they train on the use of their magic. Imagine their surprise when on the first day of school they find themselves in the same class. How could this be? After all this world doesn’t have magic and they know each other only from their dreams. But if they dream each other in a magic world…how can they be together in the world with out magic?

So many questions, and all the answers are in The Magician’s Dream by LeAnn Mathis.

What a ride this story has been. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one afternoon. I love the characters with their flaws and strengths. They are forced to live a life that no kid should be made to live, in a time when Afro-Americans are considered less that whites. They have to choose what to do–sacrifice their friendship or the customs of that time. Either way, something is threatening the very fabric of both worlds and they are the key to put it back together be it as friends or foes. This is an excellent middle grade and pre-teens read.

Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend by Author Cheryl Carpinello

Friday, July 22nd, 2016
I am retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Quest Books set in these worlds.

I also conduct Medieval/Short Story Writing Workshops in Elementary/Middle School classes. Contact me if you are interested in holding a workshop for students: ccarpinello@mac.com.

Q&A With the Author:

1.  What
inspired your book?
My former students were my inspiration. When I taught
the Legend of King Arthur, my students knew next to nothing about Guinevere
other than she married King Arthur, cheated on him, and caused the downfall of
Camelot. I wanted kids to see a more rounded character of a young girl not much
different from them.
2. How do you
spend your free time

I enjoy spending time with my family, reading,
watching my favorite movies, and being outside. When I have an extended period
of time, we travel. Two of our biggest trips have been to Egypt and the United
Kingdom.

At the dawn of Camelot, one young girl is about to take her place beside the greatest king in England’s history….

She is a mere child of twelve. But in these medieval days, this is the age when childish things must be put away and greater responsibilities accepted—all in preparation for a betrothal of marriage.

For young Lady Guinevere, on the advent of her thirteenth Birth Day, the whole idea is quite unbearable. After all, what could be better than spending her youth playing with her best friend Cedwyn, roaming the grounds around the castle looking for mythical creatures or hunting rabbits?

However, the wizard Merlyn—her teacher and friend—knows that destiny has a way of catching up with a person. His arrival sets in motion a series of events that will lead Guinevere to her destiny whether she is ready for it or not.

Rising Tide: Dark Innocence by Author Claudette Melanson

Claudette Melanson writes & edits in Guelph, Ontario, with her husband Ron and four bun babies: Tegan, Pepper, Butters & Beckett. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BA in English and an MA in Literature. She’s wished to be a Vampire since age five. She hopes to one day work full time as an author, since there are many, many books living inside her head.

In her spare time she enjoys watching Japanese Anime and reading vampire stories….along with other great fiction. She is also very interested in good health and is an advocate of Ketogenic eating, using whole and natural foods. Her favorite foods are bulletproof coffee, cashew flour crust pizza and treats made with xylitol and almond, coconut or cashew flours.

Future dreams include writing many more books and spending more time with her son Jacob. Her biggest dream is to make Universal Halloween Horror Nights a yearly event with hubby and son. A Rabbit Rescue fanatic, she also hopes to help rescues all over the world save many innocent lives.

Q&A With the Author:
1- When did you know you wanted to write books?  From about age five. I would always narrate things in my brain—all the things around me. I used to make up stories about people I’d see all the time. I even wrote a continuing story for my dance class that the teacher would read at the beginning of class every week.

2- What does your writing process look like?  The past year I’ve been doing a lot of editing for other authors. But that has kept me from writing. I intend for next year to be spent, predominantly, writing. It’s very sporadic right now, whenever I can fit it in, but I want it to become more of a fixed schedule. I like to write with music on or a horror movie on in the background, and also watching my bunbabies at play.

Could Maura’s life get any worse? …turns out it most certainly can.

Isolated and sheltered by her lonely mother, Maura’s never been able to make friends. She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.
Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love? When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania. If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother’s lies—become obstacles in Maura’s desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

I have four housebunnies, who
are spoiled to death. They have their own room, filled with toys, off the
living room. Tegan, Pepper, Butters & Beckett.
2.
In college, I lived in a
haunted house. The ghost would turn the light on (light bulb with a chain) in
the front closet every night at 9:00 PM. No one would ever believe me until
they saw it. It moved other things around too in a non-harmful way.
3.
When I was little, I was
obsessed with Dinosaurs and used to have this little plastic set I played with
all the time.
4.
Eating gluten makes my
Rheumatoid Arthritis go crazy, so I make all my cookies, cake and pizza dough
with nut flours and can make pretty much anything you could make out of regular
flour. Believe me when I say diet is what controls disease. I laughed at my
naturopath when she first told me this, but then had to admit how wrong I was.
5.
My favorite colors are red and
black…together. I don’t have a single favorite, must be those two together. I
try to make as much of my wardrobe as possible in these colors.
6.
In college, I was in every club
the English department had and between them and studying, had no free time. But
they were nice enough my senior year to name an award after me, which they
continued to give every year.
7.
I wanted to write a book since
the age of five, but once, I wrote a story for a Star Wars competition. My
mother was so critical, I rewrote it (and the second one sucked), completely .
I was nervous after that, and it took me six years to finish my first book, in
large part because of that incident.
8.
I can be competitive,
especially when someone is mean to me. I took an idea to one of my English
clubs in college for the upcoming alcohol-free mix off. One of the girls said
it was stupid in a very snarky way, so I went to a different club. We did a
whole Death’s Angst theme and even wrote a poem about how Death felt cheated,
since no one was driving drunk that night. We had a little graveyard with names
on the stones like, “Danny Drovedrunk.” We took Best of Show with the huge
trophy, and the college kept our poem to use at future mix offs, since we’d
followed the message they were trying to get across so well.
9.
It’s my dream to move to
Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories in Canada. I moved to Ontario from
Vancouver when I met my husband and hate living here. I regret leaving the
beauty of the west behind and hope next year to be living in this place, which
is so beautiful and offers so much more opportunity. I think it would offer so
much more writing inspiration too. Northern Lights are one thing I haven’t
experienced yet that I’m dying to see in person. Plus, I love snow, so it’s a
win-win.
10.
I was a breech baby when I was
born, and almost killed both myself and my mother at birth. The doctor let me
go too far for surgery and she ended up being in labor for over 48 hours.
Perhaps it was this early brush with near death that gave me such a love of the
macabre.

Unclaimed by Erin McCole Cupp

Sunday, July 17th, 2016

My Review:

Unclaimed by Erin McCole Cupp is a very interesting tale of a girl who is not wanted by her foster family. Her foster siblings have abused her and their mother blames her for everything her kids do. Tired of the power struggles with the girl, she sells her to an institution that promotes slavery. The reader will follow along as she learns how to survive in her new setting and share the struggles she goes through.

I really enjoyed the story because it was quite different from anything out there right now; the setting, the voice and the story. Though, it was a bit slow for me. All in all; the book is clean, has a good story, good characters and will be loved by readers of all ages–especially middle graders. It will be a good addition to any library or home.

Synopsis:

The kingdom of Bethany was once a beautiful place made up of five magical nations, each with their own special gifts. It all changed in a day, however, when the murderous dredgelings arrived. No one quite knows where they came from or how they keep multiplying, no matter how many are killed in the long, cruel war they’ve waged.
All seems to be lost, until a human girl named Taylor is mistakenly transported to Bethany.
Kane, the king over these nations, despises her whole-heartedly at first, and then she makes him laugh for the first time since the devastation began years ago. And the earthling manages to find new ways to surprise him with her valor and loyalty every single day. Unfortunately, Taylor’s only wish through their dangerous quest to reunite three magical stones and save the kingdom, aside from surviving this fearful place, is to return home.

But as fate goes, she soon discovers the only way to recapture the stones and save the lives of the royals she’s come to love as her first real family is to give up any hope of ever returning to her old life. In the end it all comes down to what sort of hero she truly is, one to her own self, or one to entire nations.

The Extraordinarily Ordinary Life of Cassandra Jones

Saturday, June 4th, 2016

A Review:

Cassandra Jones is a twelve year old girl who is a bit selfish, much like many girls at that age. She wants to have friends and be liked by other girls her age. She has a normal family that loves her, but gets tired of the drama they don’t need while taking care of her and her siblings.

The series is composed of short stories divided into chapters. The reader walks in Cassandra’s shoes through different situations in her life.

Cassandra Jones is a twelve year old girl who is a bit selfish, much like many girls at that age. She wants to have friends and be liked by other girls her age, which is also pretty much like girls that age. She has a normal family, mom, dad, that loves her, but gets tired of the drama they don’t need while taking care of her and her siblings. Every day is a new adventure and a new page in her life.

514aQIF2YdL._AC_US160_

The series is composed of short books divided into chapters. The reader walks in Cassandra’s shoes through different situations in her life. Is a great reading for girls ten to twelve.

Things like snakebite, school dealings, life at home, birthday, boys, etc. are present on the pages.

41eRQjgtNBL._AC_US160_

I believe many girls around ten to twelve years old will like this series. They will connect with Cassandra, the main character, and see themselves between the pages of her stories. It will bring many hours of reading and peace to parents during the summer. Great job.

Existence by Carolyn Frank

Sunday, May 29th, 2016

My review: 5 stars

Existence by Carolyn Frank is a YA book with likable characters and real life problems. Josh is a new student at his high school and first day he get stack with Ester the weird girl in his class. There is mystery about her and possible murder in her family.

For his part Josh come from a trouble home. They had to move in a hurry and his mother had to go back to work because of it. His father is a grumpy man that wants to live his dreams through Josh without any care of what kind of life his son is living because of it. Pretty much a micromanager and a negative man that seam to have a problem being alive and letting his family have a life of their own.

A Fire That Heals– A Lost Faith Is Never Too Far Gone

Tuesday, May 17th, 2016

“A Lost Faith Is Never Too Far Gone”
Serena is devastated when her lifelong friend, Aminadab, is banned from Zarahemla for abandoning his faith and persecuting the saints. To add to her despair, she loses the rare ruby her father entrusted to her and she feels all is lost.
Unbeknownst to her, Aminadab finds the ruby, and takes it as his only reminder of Serena. As an outcast, Aminadab and his company of dissenters seek refuge among the Lamanites, who happen to be the very people who killed his parents. Not only is his anxiety high for being surrounded by these bloodthirsty people, but he quickly discovers he’s in the middle of a Gadianton plot to start a war between the Nephites and Lamanites.
Selling the ruby soon becomes the only option Aminadab has at escaping the volatile life he finds himself in. However, this act might forever banish him from ever being in Serena’s graces again.

In D Vansen’s Book of Mormon adventure, Aminadab must choose which side he’s on in a reflective journey of self-discovery, while Serena must stay faithful and hold onto the hope that a lost faith is never too far gone.

D Vansen lives in Northern Utah with her family. After serving a LDS mission, she developed a love for the Book

of Mormon and its eternal truths. She claims that if you ever want the scriptures and its characters to come to life,
plot a novel from them. She loves all things artistic, unless it involves combining food ingredients. Thank heavens
she has children that will help with that specific talent.

What a treat this book has been for me. I truly enjoyed the tale and the characters in it. I believe this is an excellent piece for young adults as young as 10 years old and up. It is a great book to learn about choices, repentance, forgiveness. It will also help many to make better choices in their lives and stay closer to the faith of their fathers. It is excellent material without being preachy and is presented in a non-threatening way. You enjoy a clean read from the first page to the end.
Serena, is devastated when her best friend Aminadab is banished from their city because he is associated with a radical group some members of which had killed some members of the church of God that she belong to. The same day she loses her father’s precious stone, a treasure that was passed to her by him and the lost off it that will bring great sadness to her family.
How can she keep the faith when all seems lost to her?
In this book you will find a great tale with some elements from the Book of Mormon and some elements from the author’s imagination. In all it works beautifully, but is not considered doctrine. It is an excellent work of art. I loved it.

If you believe… A Doorway to Forever will open before you

Saturday, April 16th, 2016

The Blurb:

Best friends share everything, right? Unless it’s a secret that could cost them their lives.Robyn and Kit are born with forbidden magic-sense, the power to see and hear beyond Earthly sight and sound. It’s a curse that haunts them, but the girls are strangely drawn to it—could there be more to this power than they’ve been told?
When they spill their secret, it opens a doorway back to Forever—a beautiful realm where magic-sense began. They learn the truth: they have been given a noble gift. It connects them to the Skyborn royalty of this new world. They’ve been summoned back by the forces for good to preserve the kingdom and revive the power where it once flourished—on Earth. It can thrive again, if Robyn and Kit are brave enough to follow

Kindle Ready Front Cover JPEG_5939198

However, the doorway awakens more than magical fairy-tales. A dark force is unleashed—one that has battled the Skyborn since time began, and it wants the girls dead, the Earth destroyed.

Beyond the doorway is where the adventure begins—trickery, kidnapping, a prison break, rescue teams, sword fights, magical gold-dust, holographic medallions, and singing orbs—but only for those who have the courage to believe.

My Review: 4 stars

What a great read A Doorway Back to Forever was. This is a middle grade story that is full of magic, soldiers, kings, dark forces and Pegasus. It will keep middle school kids glued to its pages, especially if they like magic and magic kingdoms.

The earth is a world that once had magic and when it was used wrong, banished it.  This is where Kit and her friend Robin live with their families. The problem is that kids still are born with magic and are left to their own devices, hiding from their parents and the police to survive. This is Kit and Robin’s fate for a long time until they find each other and Mr. Fischer.

Believing is the only key to all the beautiful things that await Kit and Robin in the magical world that exists on par with their own. To keep it free they will have to work hard and be brave enough to do what they need to do. That is a tall order for two girls that have barely discovered their magic and now have to use it to save the magic kingdom and earth.

Now, when they return to their own world, if they want to survive all the darkness that is unleashed upon them they must keep the orb safe and keep on believing, if not all is lost.
