Snippets 1:
Courtney stopped abruptly as the scatterings of a
cave-in came into view. “Oh no,” she whispered, one hand to her mouth. Moving
slowly, she noticed a body slumped in the hallway. “Please don’t be dead,” she
said over and over again as she moved closer. She couldn’t help but wonder
which of her friends lay there, and what had happened to the other.
The closer she came, the more detail came to light. She
recognized Tyler Durand as he lay on his side. His light-colored hair lay limp
against his head. His skin was unnaturally pale. At least she didn’t think he
was dead. It took a lot to kill a dragon. But just beyond him, a little more
out of the way, lay Anwen Porter. And she wasn’t moving.

Can a Princess be handicapped?

Tuesday, February 14th, 2017
Just in time for Valentines and for your favorite lady, a new clean, young adult, medieval fantasy romance hit the market today. “A Golden Princess,” book three in A Royal Romance Series of Anna del C. Dye is a stand-alone story. You will find an array of characters, fears, love, endurance and heroes, between its pages. Enjoy!

About the book:

Small for her age, Princess Nyala is determined to be noticed and someday rule with fairness and valor in Kaloma. All changes when she looks upon the stars and they predict her accident. After she awakens to a broken body, her father takes to his goblet and she steps into power in her kingdom at sixteen.

Her father said that no man would choose a half-broken princess. Is that how Prince Nicolao sees her after the accident? Her heart is unsure and out of fear she keeps him away to avoid a broken heart.

As soon the other kingdoms in the land determine the predicament of the Royal House of Kaloma, they too will prey on her vulnerability to steal her kingdom. She will have to confront new foes or lose it all.

What other said about the book:

Review by Roseanne Wilkins: A Golden Princess is a story about overcoming hardship and finding true love. This story is a clean romance suitable for pre-teens. I enjoyed the story of love and loss and finding love again through hardship. There aren’t many tales put in a medieval setting that involve strong female characters, especially characters who are physically challenged. Much of the relationship-building between the main characters is told in past perspective after Princess Nyala is injured. Moments are lived through her memories. When Nyala accepts her injuries and moves forward, the story takes off. It was good to read a story where the main character has to face a life very different from what she had planned. I love happily-ever-after’s, and Anna del C. Dye knows how to deliver.

Can a human heart overcome a demon soul?

When soul-eating demons overrun his world, Kaelis, a young seraph warrior, uses the Queen’s ring to open a portal in space and flee with the infant heir to the throne, landing on earth. Unbeknownst to him, the demon leader, Nsark, follows through the portal, determined to devour the soul of every last seraph, especially the Queen’s heir. After Kaelis hides the baby, Nsark creates the ultimate weapon by fathering a half-human, half-demon: a soul-stealer’s child.

Sixteen years later, an awkward teen named James struggles to fit in with his peers. In a last-ditch effort, he joins the school play, where he meets Lucy. Something deep draws them together, and their friendship reveals their hidden pasts: one is an angel, one is half-demon. Lucy and James find themselves pulled into an age-old war between their peoples. Hunted by relentless enemies, and grappling with deep-seated instincts and strange new powers, they must fight for their lives, their souls, and each other.

Snippet:
His rich baritone voice crescendoed in a dark laugh, pulling her gaze back to the stage. Backlit by slanted beams of light, his black curls gleamed. Gray eyes blazed so bright they were almost silver. High, sharp cheekbones soared above full, powerful lips. The cape draped over his broad shoulders, following his tapered form to the floor. Something fierce and powerful seethed inside him like a midnight storm. Was it just acting? Or was the role of Dracula opening a window into what was really inside him? Acting or not, something about James called to her.

Then one day at the library, the only place she’s allowed to go, she takes a picture of a beautiful boy.
Before long she’s lying to her mom, and sneaking out late at night to meet Zander. But Zander wants more than a secret romance. If Anya wants to be with the boy of her dreams, she will have to risk her relationship with the only other person she’s ever cared about.

Rachel Schieffelbein Top Ten List

Top Ten Fairy Tales:

  1. The Little Mermaid. The original story is much different from the Disney one, and I enjoy them both. The mermaid’s motivation for becoming human in the original story is quite interesting.
  2. Sleeping Beauty. I love the Disney version of this one. Merriweather was always my favorite fairy. Plus I love Prince Philip.
  3. Thumbelina. If you’ve never seen the animated version of this, you should. It’s wonderful.
  4. The Six Swans. I love the princess in this story. She’s brave and selfless. And I kind of love that it’s a girl saving all her brothers.
  5. Snow White and Rose Red. This is another one I’d love to do a retelling of some day. Not a lot of people are familiar with the story.
  6. Cinderella. There are so many wonderful retellings of Cinderella, it’s hard to pick a favorite.
  7. The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I’ve always found this one fascinating. The whole underground world the princesses visit, it’s so dark and mysterious.
  8. Snow White. I’d love to write a version of this story completely from the Evil Queen’s perspective.
  9. Beauty and the Beast, especially the Disney version. Belle IS the best Disney princess.
  10. Rapunzel. I remember having this read to me as a young child and it’s one that just stayed close to my heart. That’s why I wanted to do a contemporary retelling of it.

Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archaeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. But, Tutankhamen Speaks isn’t a story about the lost scrolls. It’s about the story written down on those ancient scrolls: Tutankhamen’s story.

2014 EVVY Merit Award for Historical Fiction from CIPA (Colorado Independent Publishers Assoc.)
Reviews:
“A delightful way to bring history
to children.”
“We are using this as resource for
world cultures for home school.”
“What I liked about this book was
that it gives a glimpse into the everyday life of Tut, before and after his
rise to Pharaoh. It was like a fly on the wall peek at his life without it just
being part of a much larger plot.”
And what a tale
it is! King Tut tells us his entire life story from when he was a boy and not
yet acknowledged as heir to the throne of Egypt, through his father’s death and
his own ascension to the throne; we learn of his love for Ankhesenpaaten, whom
he married, the sadness they experienced at the loss of a child, and the
politics and hierarchy of ancient Egypt with its court intrigue.”

A Chaotic Courtship

Friday, August 19th, 2016

For as long as she can remember, Bethany Swafford has loved reading books. That love of words extended to writing as she grew older and when it became more difficult to find a ‘clean’ book, she determined to write her own. Among her favorite authors is Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Georgette Heyer.

When she doesn’t have pen to paper (or fingertips to laptop keyboard), she can generally be found with a book in hand. In her spare time, Bethany reviews books for a book site called More Than A Review.

She finds herself dealing with her own feelings, her sister, her younger brother, jealous members of a house party, a jilted suitor, and a highwayman as she falls in love with the charming Mr. Richfield.

Snippet:

“You recall I met a Mr. Richfield in
London, shortly after I first arrived?”
“Yes, you mentioned him several
times in your letters.”
Her tone was matter of fact, giving
absolutely nothing away.
“Well…” I hesitated as I sought
the right words. I rubbed my palms against my skirt. “At Aunt Forester’s last
dinner party, Mr. Richfield asked for my permission to come speak to Father.”
For a moment, there was silence.
“What was your answer?” Mother asked, as calm as ever.
I bit my lip and found I could no
longer meet her gaze. “I fear I may have spoken without thinking.” Back when I
had said the words, I had been surprised. Now though, I realized just how
mistaken I had been. “I said it’s always pleasant to have someone new visit.”
“I see. Do you like him?”
Ah, there was the question. “I think
so.” I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “He is respectable, at least
as far as Uncle Forester could discover. No one ever had a word to say against
him. I think he is a good man.”
“And yet, you don’t seem
enthusiastic about marrying him.”
“I have only known him for a few
weeks.” It felt good to be able to talk this out with my mother, now that the
awkwardness of saying the words had passed. If anyone could help me untangle my
feelings, it was her. “Is that enough time to know a person? You knew Papa your
whole life before he proposed.”
Mother’s hand came over mine.
“Diana, look at me.” I lifted my eyes to hers. “You are the only one who can
make this decision. It is your right to refuse an offer you find distasteful.
However, you need to understand it is not likely you will have the opportunity
to travel again and meet other people.”
“I don’t find the offer distasteful.
I just don’t think I know him well enough to accept his hand in marriage.” I
sighed. “I wish I had had the time to know more of him.”
“Perhaps you will.”
I shook my head. That seemed an
impossibility. “Mama, you didn’t see the look on his face when I pretended I
didn’t understand. He was so disappointed. I acted as if I were a senseless,
empty-headed child! What kind of man would pursue me in the face of that?”
“A man who would be understanding.
Someone who would realize your shy nature.”
As soon as I pulled my hand away, I
reached to pour myself some much-needed tea. “There are other, much prettier
girls with better dowries than I,” I remarked, adding just the right amount of
cream and sugar. “I doubt I will ever see him again.”
Of that I was quite certain. I’d had
hours to consider the whole mess. I sipped my tea as I watched my mother’s
face. Her smile was one I couldn’t quite understand. Why did she look so
amused?
“Mr. Richfield is already here.”

Existence by Carolyn Frank

Sunday, May 29th, 2016

My review: 5 stars

Existence by Carolyn Frank is a YA book with likable characters and real life problems. Josh is a new student at his high school and first day he get stack with Ester the weird girl in his class. There is mystery about her and possible murder in her family.

For his part Josh come from a trouble home. They had to move in a hurry and his mother had to go back to work because of it. His father is a grumpy man that wants to live his dreams through Josh without any care of what kind of life his son is living because of it. Pretty much a micromanager and a negative man that seam to have a problem being alive and letting his family have a life of their own.

A Fire That Heals– A Lost Faith Is Never Too Far Gone

Tuesday, May 17th, 2016

“A Lost Faith Is Never Too Far Gone”
Serena is devastated when her lifelong friend, Aminadab, is banned from Zarahemla for abandoning his faith and persecuting the saints. To add to her despair, she loses the rare ruby her father entrusted to her and she feels all is lost.
Unbeknownst to her, Aminadab finds the ruby, and takes it as his only reminder of Serena. As an outcast, Aminadab and his company of dissenters seek refuge among the Lamanites, who happen to be the very people who killed his parents. Not only is his anxiety high for being surrounded by these bloodthirsty people, but he quickly discovers he’s in the middle of a Gadianton plot to start a war between the Nephites and Lamanites.
Selling the ruby soon becomes the only option Aminadab has at escaping the volatile life he finds himself in. However, this act might forever banish him from ever being in Serena’s graces again.

In D Vansen’s Book of Mormon adventure, Aminadab must choose which side he’s on in a reflective journey of self-discovery, while Serena must stay faithful and hold onto the hope that a lost faith is never too far gone.

D Vansen lives in Northern Utah with her family. After serving a LDS mission, she developed a love for the Book

of Mormon and its eternal truths. She claims that if you ever want the scriptures and its characters to come to life,
plot a novel from them. She loves all things artistic, unless it involves combining food ingredients. Thank heavens
she has children that will help with that specific talent.

What a treat this book has been for me. I truly enjoyed the tale and the characters in it. I believe this is an excellent piece for young adults as young as 10 years old and up. It is a great book to learn about choices, repentance, forgiveness. It will also help many to make better choices in their lives and stay closer to the faith of their fathers. It is excellent material without being preachy and is presented in a non-threatening way. You enjoy a clean read from the first page to the end.
Serena, is devastated when her best friend Aminadab is banished from their city because he is associated with a radical group some members of which had killed some members of the church of God that she belong to. The same day she loses her father’s precious stone, a treasure that was passed to her by him and the lost off it that will bring great sadness to her family.
How can she keep the faith when all seems lost to her?
In this book you will find a great tale with some elements from the Book of Mormon and some elements from the author’s imagination. In all it works beautifully, but is not considered doctrine. It is an excellent work of art. I loved it.

If you believe… A Doorway to Forever will open before you

Saturday, April 16th, 2016

banner-3

The Blurb:

Best friends share everything, right? Unless it’s a secret that could cost them their lives.Robyn and Kit are born with forbidden magic-sense, the power to see and hear beyond Earthly sight and sound. It’s a curse that haunts them, but the girls are strangely drawn to it—could there be more to this power than they’ve been told?
When they spill their secret, it opens a doorway back to Forever—a beautiful realm where magic-sense began. They learn the truth: they have been given a noble gift. It connects them to the Skyborn royalty of this new world. They’ve been summoned back by the forces for good to preserve the kingdom and revive the power where it once flourished—on Earth. It can thrive again, if Robyn and Kit are brave enough to follow

Kindle Ready Front Cover JPEG_5939198

However, the doorway awakens more than magical fairy-tales. A dark force is unleashed—one that has battled the Skyborn since time began, and it wants the girls dead, the Earth destroyed.

Beyond the doorway is where the adventure begins—trickery, kidnapping, a prison break, rescue teams, sword fights, magical gold-dust, holographic medallions, and singing orbs—but only for those who have the courage to believe.

My Review: 4 stars

What a great read A Doorway Back to Forever was. This is a middle grade story that is full of magic, soldiers, kings, dark forces and Pegasus. It will keep middle school kids glued to its pages, especially if they like magic and magic kingdoms.

The earth is a world that once had magic and when it was used wrong, banished it.  This is where Kit and her friend Robin live with their families. The problem is that kids still are born with magic and are left to their own devices, hiding from their parents and the police to survive. This is Kit and Robin’s fate for a long time until they find each other and Mr. Fischer.

Believing is the only key to all the beautiful things that await Kit and Robin in the magical world that exists on par with their own. To keep it free they will have to work hard and be brave enough to do what they need to do. That is a tall order for two girls that have barely discovered their magic and now have to use it to save the magic kingdom and earth.

Now, when they return to their own world, if they want to survive all the darkness that is unleashed upon them they must keep the orb safe and keep on believing, if not all is lost.

Into The Wind by Don Carey

Thursday, March 17th, 2016

Don, what makes you passionate about writing?

I love telling stories. I love taking a”what if” and working it through to its natural conclusion, and then pushing it one step beyond the obvious.

Do you have a writing routine?

Balancing writing with a full-time job has been very hard for me. Maybe that’s why it’s taken me 10 years to write 2 books. LOL. *sob*

I’ve tried all kinds of things – mornings, evenings, weekends – but the routine that works the best for me is to start work early and take a 90-minute lunch for my writing time.

As a bonus, I occasionally travel for work and whenever I’m on an airplane, I write from the moment the tray table comes down until the flight attendants make me put my computer away.

I been there and done that… What is the title of your book?

51hrn4pPi4L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Into The Wind

What genre does your book fall under?

This book is a romance with a side of family drama.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I had to do some research on this one, since most of the characters’ physical properties were based on people I knew growing up. Hooray for Google image searches.

  • Kehau – This one was way hard. Kehau is expressly Hawaiian, and the list of Hawaiian or even Polynesian actresses is pretty small. But visually she would look somewhat similar to Shannyn Sossamon or Alexandra Shipp
  • Jordan – I think for him we’ll give Nial Horan his acting debut
  • Vicks – This is the one character I already had an actress selected: Kulraj Randhawa
  • Duke – We’ll go back to Britain and choose Reece Douglas

Nice picks. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Shortly after their engagement, Jordan and Kehau must face powerful headwinds that threaten to ground their relationship.

Interesting. Is your book self-published or represented by an agency?

I’m self publishing this book, and thoroughly enjoying the process!

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

The first draft probably took a full year. And then I got very discouraged in my writing career and let so many things distract me that it was another three years before I considered it “finished.”

Don, what other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Author mug 5

I think the closest comparison is Sandcastles by LuAnne Rice, although it’s more of a family drama than a romance.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

My wife had some very difficult health issues while I was writing my first book. In addition, the relationship between Jordan and Kehau felt very tenuous at the end of Bumpy Landings. So when my muse presented me with a story that gave Jordan’s mom significant health challenges that tested Jordan and Kehau’s relationship, I had to go with it.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

It includes dancing, kissing, airplanes, and mud wrestling.

Cool… Where can we find your book?

So far it’s Amazon-exclusive. This is the livest link I have – for the ebook. Print book is scheduled to go live on the 10th, so I can send the link then.

Rift Watcher; It looks like a pyramid and an octopus had a baby

Friday, February 19th, 2016

Sixteen-year-old Onnie, newly minted adult, isn’t sure what she wants in life, but she is sure what she doesn’t want, and going off to the Interplanetary Alliance’s Academy is at the top of that list. When she purposely flunks the entrance exam, she’s certain that’s why her father commanded her and her brother Jayesh to return to Rift Watcher Station. As Onnie settles into her new life on Rift Watcher, will she find a place of her own?

Chief Medical Officer Darragh Conally has issues. And secrets. As Onnie determinedly worms her way into his life and forges a friendship he doesn’t want, those secrets come dangerously close to being exposed. But how do you tell the Captain’s daughter to back off without risking your job?

There’s something wrong with the relationship between the Galladirans and the Earthers. It’s all polite on the surface; too polite. And Onnie can feel the tension rippling underneath. How long will it be until things break wide open?

C R Simper was raised seven miles north of a small town, with two sisters, thirteen dogs, and an open sky painted every night with billions of stars. This unharried childhood allowed time for much reading, which led into a desire to create stories of worlds beyond her own.

She is a member of the American Night Writer’s Association. She has two published short stories in the Steampunk genre. Besides writing, she has a passion for genealogy, volleyball, and bargain hunting.

Excerpt 2

A pyramid-shaped space station built on the surface of an asteroid, which stoically guarded the edge of territory controlled by the Interplanetary Alliance, of which my home, Earth, was a charter member. No special tear or black hole warranted the name, just a division: us and them, and the expanse in between, long ago named The Rift.

Four docking towers rose high above the pyramid’s corners, four above-ground train tunnels exited the sides, hugging the spherical asteroid like a small party hat perched above a man’s ear.

Jay laughed. “It looks like a pyramid and an octopus had a baby.”

“Welcome to Rift Watcher.” I rode his humor to sound happy.
