Author Interview for Kim Williams-Justesen

Kim, welcome to my YA Dark blog. What makes you passionate about writing?

I like that I’m the one in control of things, and that it isn’t done until I say it’s done (or until my editor says it’s done!).

Very nice…Do you have a writing routine?

I work full-time, so I write in the evenings and on weekends. I usually grab a handful of Chips-Ahoy cookies, a big glass of water, and head to my office. I reread the last few pages of where I left off, then I take a deep breath and dive in.

What a great scape. What is the title of your book?

My upcoming YA is called DEATH’S KISS. It’s being published by Angelic Knight Press under my legal name (Kim Williams-Justesen). Mimi is my illegal name, under which I write adult horror and do nefarious things I can’t really discuss.

Double personality so young… 🙂 What genre does your book fall under?

It’s a contemporary paranormal. Sometimes I think we should just make up category names. It’s in the Fred genre. Okay, maybe not.

LOL. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I could see Jennifer Lawrence (of The Hunger Games) as Maylee, the main character. I think Chaske Spencer (a beautiful Native American actor – look him up!) would be awesome as Zee.

Beautiful ah… I’ll check him out. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Maylee is committed because of her obsession with Death, but what happens when she falls in love with Him?

WOW, so interesting. Is your book self-published or represented by an agency?

I don’t have an agent, yet. This book sold to the publisher directly.

Congratulations. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I wrote the first draft in four months, then spent four more months revising.

Editing is so boring but worth it. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I’d probably compare it conceptually to the show “Dead Like Me” – and it does have a little of that sarcastic, sardonic humor.

Really…very nice. Who or What inspired you to write this book?

My book BEAUTIFUL MONSTER deals with a serial killer, so I spent a lot of time talking about, writing about, and researching Death. My co-author and I were joking about all the work that death is. I’d had an idea about a girl who could see Death, and that just evolved into the idea of “What if death was a job, done by lots of souls?” From there, I determined why she could see Death and what the result would be.

Great idea. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
This book is about facing hard choices, it’s about letting go of the past and not letting it control your present. It’s about defining who you want to be rather than letting other people or situations determine it for you. Oh yeah – and macaroni and cheese makes a cameo appearance.

Where can we find your book?

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Facebook
