What does THE CHICKEN CATCHERS and WRITING FOR REAL-WORLD REASON have in common?

 the author…Mary-Ann Duke 🙂

Where are you from, Mary-Ann?

I am a native Floridian. I currently live in Sarasota, FL

I  like Florida. If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

If I could time travel, I’d go to Jerusalem in Jesus’ time to meet him.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would it be? What food would you serve?

If I could have dinner with any of my characters, it’d be Victoria Scarlett Jones and Jimbo Bean. I’d serve chicken and dumplings.

If you could travel anywhere on earth or off, where would you go?

I’d visit the Great Wall of China. (I’ve already visited the pyramids of Egypt.)

Describe your dream writing spot.

My dream writing spot would be high up in a treehouse. But, alas, I write a lot in my office and in the car when traveling.

How did you find enough commitment to complete your books?

As a full-time teacher, I wrote my books during Christmas vacation, Spring Break, and summer weeks off from school. Commitment? I am tenacious about everything. I’m competitive and don’t like for “anything to whip me!”

What books have you written?

WRITING FOR REAL-WORLD REASONS and  THE CHICKEN CATCHERS.

I’ve written many other manuscripts, but only two others are published.
In 1993 I wrote a teacher’s resource manual titled WRITING FOR REAL-WORLD REASONS which helps elementary teachers teach their students to write, produce and perform their own plays. Using the information and methods in my book, several of my 4th grade students have won playwriting competitions. I was invited to give a workshop presentation on this book in Melbourne, Australia at the Australia Reading Association Convention. I had “standing room only” at my session. I think this is true because I wore a costume (I dressed like Queen Elizabeth complete with crown) and handed out invitations to conference attendees several hours prior to my session. Press there photographed me, etc. So the costume helped immensely. I sold several CASES of the book!

In 2005 THE CHICKEN CATCHERS, an LDS novel was published. This was supposed to be a middle grade novel. It’s told through the eyes of a 12 year-old girl, the main character’s sister. But this book has been read (to my knowledge) by mothers of youth rather than the youth themselves. It’s about a 19 year-old young man who wants to serve a mission for the LDS church. He is the only member in his family. His family is poor and can’t help with expenses. He and his sister work various jobs, including catching chickens to earn money. There’s a near-hurricane hailstorm, a love interest, a TV appearance and an alligator attack (obviously the setting is in the south.)

What genre are they?

Education and LDS MG novel

Do you have any special appearances or events coming up?

When the book first came out I had several articles about it in the newspaper and I also appeared on local TV.

Where can we find this books?

Both these books are now available through me. I have some remainders that I can sell at a very good price since the publication date was more than five years ago.  A copy of THE CHICKEN CATCHERS will be a great Christmas gift for youth you love (children or grandchildren) who are planning a mission.

Originally, they sold for $17.95 and $15.95 respectively.

I will sell them for $8.00 each which includes postage and handling. Send check to: Mary Ann Duke, 4014 Southern Manor Court, Sarasota, FL  Zip code is 34233.
