Heather Hamilton-Senter, tell us where you were born and where you live now.
I was born in Provo, Utah but grew up here in Canada about an hour east of Toronto.
What makes you passionate about writing?
Reading is what makes me passionate about writing! I’ve loved books for as long as I can remember. I was raised in a family that values art and literally learned my ABCs from beautifully illustrated fairy tale books, books on mythology, and even comic books. I discovered The Lord of the Rings when I was 11 and fairly quickly read just about every fantasy book I could find in the bookstore. I began writing after that—because I’d run out of things to read but still wanted to live in those worlds.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
From start to finish it was about 8 months, but really, the majority was written during a 3 month period when I decided to stop messing around and finish.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
It was actually a dream. I have extraordinarily vivid dreams that I usually remember. I often have recurring dreams and even dreams that continue a single storyline. This dream was so clear and coherent that I had to jot it down.
I’d been going through a bit of a mid-life crisis for about a year. I’d been a stay at home mom for a long time—my children are spaced very far apart at, now, 7, 14 and 19—but they were getting older. I was facing my eldest daughter going soon away to university. I’d been working from home creating custom photography prints and had done some wedding photography, but I was tired of that. My training is as a singer and actor, but I couldn’t see returning to that career as a viable option yet. As I looked at what I’d written, I realized that I’d put away a dream I’d had since I was just a kid—to write a book and see it published.
The characters from that dream became the three main characters and the ending of the series coming up in Book 3 is still exactly as I dreamed it.
What is the title of your book?
Bound In Blue: Book One of the Sword of Elements. Out right now is also the second book, Caught In Crimson, and a related novella called To Make A Witch.
Could you give us a back cover blurb?
Gods walk among us. All you have to do is See.
When Rhi discovers that beings out of myth and legend are real, her mysterious ability to see magic as color puts her at the center of a conflict between humans and the ancient gods of Avalon. To save herself, Rhi will have to master her strange power and remake Excalibur – the Sword of Elements—but if she succeeds, it will mean that she’s far more dangerous than any god.
And gods don’t like being challenged.
What genre does your book fall under?
Do you have a favorite character, why?
Definitely Redcap. He’s cheeky and charming and sexy. He started out as a scary, monster-like character and then just somehow grabbed the page and turned himself into something else.
What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?
I’m so intrigued by the way world mythologies intertwine and reflect and affect one another. Very few cultures grew up in a vacuum. For example, Celtic mythology influenced the slightly later development of Norse mythology, probably due to trade between ancient Europe and the area which is now Britain. I hope my books inspire readers to go on their own treasure hunt for all those interesting, fascinating things in the world that deserve to be remembered.
What else might pique the reader’s interest in your book?
Though my book is listed as YA Fantasy, it rides the line between Young Adult and regular fantasy. It’s older and a little darker, more complicated emotionally and philosophically than most YA, but the content is still appropriate for younger readers.
I’ve intentionally created flawed, broken characters and no clear “good vs. evilâ€. Instead, the protagonist Rhi must grapple with the fact that what she wants might put her at odds with people she cares about, and that what she needs might in fact make her a danger to them and the world.
