Kevin, well us where you were born and where do you live now.
I was born in Lehi, Utah and currently live within a stone’s throw of where I was born. However, that current residence came by way of Arizona, North Carolina, and Brazil before coming back to Lehi, Utah again.
What makes you passionate about writing?
Coming up with new and interesting worlds, ideas, and creations is what keeps me passionate about writing. I’ve been writing novels since I was 11 years old and it is the one thing I still do now, 16 years later, that I did then. Writing fuels my passion for writing, which in turn fuels more writing. It’s one of the reasons why I have so many different projects going at any one time.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
The first draft of my most recent manuscript, STORMS, was written in 72 days. Its predecessor, SANDS, which is the first book in the Sharani Series, was written in about 96 days, if I remember correctly.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
Two things. The first were two people at the LTUE (Life, the Universe, and Everything) Symposium on 2014. Johnny Worthen and Shallee MacArthur. They talked about dedication to the craft and writing a set amount of words every day. That night I watched the first Avengers movie, where the chitari come out of their space rift. Those inspired the genesauri monsters in my novel series. I started writing that next day and didn’t stop until I was done.
What is the title of your book?
I have three novels, SANDS (Book 1 of the Sharani Series), STORMS (Book 2 of the Sharani Series), and Resurgent Shadows (Book 1 of the Successive Harmony Series)
Could you give us a back cover blurb?
SANDS – “For nine months of the year, the sands of the Sharani Desert are safe. The genesauri-giant, flying, serpentine monsters who hunt across the desert in enormous packs-lie dormant. The smallest of their kind is able to take down a single man with ease, and the largest is able to swallow entire clans. The people of the desert have always been able to predict the creatures’ appearance, but this year, the genesauri have stopped following the rules.
When the genesauri suddenly attack her clan, seventeen-year-old Lhaurel draws a sword in her people’s defense-a forbidden practice for women of any clan-and is sentenced to death by her own people. Chained to a rock and left to be eaten by the next wave of genesauri, Lhaurel is rescued by a mysterious, elusive clan said to curse children at a glance, work unexplainable terrors, and disappear into the sands without a trace.
With the fate of the clans hanging in the balance, Lhaurel discovers she possesses a rare and uncontrollable power-one that will be tested as the next deadly genesauri attack looms on the horizon and the clash between clans grows more inevitable by the hour.”
STORMS (release date Jan. 7th) – Storms rage across the Sharani desert. Those clansmen who survived the devastation in the Oasis take refuge in the Roterralar Warren. But just as they grew to understand in the Oasis, maybe they weren’t meant to be together at all. Change is in the wind. The Orinai are coming.
Gavin struggles to find his place within the clans while Beryl begins to recognize that what he did in calling the Orinai will have devastating consequences. In an effort to atone for that, he sets in motion events that will lead to the end of safety and, possibly, the destruction of the Rahuli people.
After waking from weeks of troubled slumber, Lhaurel struggles with what she had to do in the Oasis and the burdgeoning powers within her. As everything she holds dear begins to fall apart again she is plagued with the one, most important question. Can she save her people once again or is she unwilling to pay that price?
RESURGENT SHADOWS – Humanity stands on the brink of annihilation. Dragons fill the skies.
Ever since the Breaking, when earthquakes tore the world apart and unleashed the nightmares of myth and legend, humankind has struggled for survival.
Caleb is one of the survivors, and the only thing he cares about is getting revenge on the monsters that killed his wife and son. When he saves the life of a dverger–a mythic dwarf-like creature–Caleb discovers that the Breaking may have brought good to the world along with the evil.
On the other side of the country, Eric leads a small group of survivors in relative prosperity until a powerful war hammer is forced into his hands–a weapon with a will of its own so commanding that it sends Eric on a mission with one purpose: destroy the creatures that threaten his home.
Caleb and Eric must each decide to do something no one has dared before: to hunt the Dragonlords.
What genre does your book fall under?
The Sharani Series (SANDS & STORMS) is YA Epic Fantasy. Resurgent Shadows is YA Urban Fantasy
Do you have a favorite character, why?
My favorite character from the Sharani Series is Gavin. I like his positivity and dogged persistence. From Resurgent Shadows, my favorite character is Torsten.
What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?
There are certainly messages I’m trying to send. All books, even and sometimes especially children’s books, have some sort of message they are trying to convey. However, I will leave it up to the readers to determine what that message (or messages) is. As an author, my intent is more to ask questions and present possible answers rather than to give you “the” or “a” right answer. So through the Sharani Series readers will see lots of scenarios that would defy initial stereotypes and see some that fall well within them. Each are there for a reason and have a purpose in helping the reader to find their own answers.
What else might pique the reader’s interest in your book?
Well, magic, unique creatures, strong characters (especially the women in the Sharani Series) and a very intricate plot should interest them. Who doesn’t like people riding around on giant birds and using powers intricately tied to the geography of the area?
