Kaylen’s Rising author, Yves Robichaud, is visiting today

Yves, is so good to have you with us. I think this is the first time I interview a Canadian Author. So welcome to my blog. Well lets get to know you and your book…

1) Yves, tell us where you were born:
I was born at the Moncton hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. I have lived most of my life in this area and I still do.

2) New Brunswick, a very inspiring name. I could come up with a story with the name alone. 🙂  Who or What inspired you to write this book?

My son and best friend Jérémy inspired me to write this book. He’s 13 years old and not exactly an avid reader. I was trying to inspire him to read by writing and sharing the stories with him. He really enjoyed the writing process with me. I would always keep him up to date with the latest changes to the story. He’s now my biggest fan and also my biggest critic. 🙂

3) That is really nice, now we have to know what is the name of your new book?

The name of my first and only novel (so far) is Kaylen’s Rising (Tomes of Taria, Book 1). I plan on writing many more.

4) Oh, do tell us more about it.
The main character’s name is…you guessed it, Kaylen! He’s a 14 year old elf that lives with his parents in a city built underground. Most kids his age learn to use weapons or magic, but his parents prevent him from doing anything of the sort. In fact, Kaylen is more or less a prisoner in his own home. For reasons that he doesn’t know, his family is hated by everyone in the city, making Kaylen a complete outsider. When his parents finally relent and allow him to attend school, Kaylen learns of many things at once. He becomes aware that his family has a disgraceful past, that his people are at war with humans living on the surface world and that he has a very rare magical ability allowing him to summon skeletons. Is it a blessing or a curse? He has many things to figure out, including how to deal with the dangers that lie in his future.

5) It does sound quite promising. What genre does your book fall under?

Kaylen’s Rising falls under the genre of middle grade (or teen) fantasy. The target audience is aged between 10 and 15, however it can be enjoyed by fans of fantasy of any age.

6) What other books would you compared to?
Not that I dare compare my writing to Rowling or Tolkien, but the story compares to Harry Potter and the Hobbit. If you combined both stories together, you would get something similar to Kaylen’s Rising.

7) I love both series. What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?
That’s a difficult question. I do hope that I inspire children to make further use of their imagination. In books, anything is possible, even summoning skeletons. At the very least, I hope I provide readers with several hours of entertainment.

8) Sounds perfect. Is your book self-published or represented by an agency?

It is self-published and I am proud of it!
