Debra Jayne East author of Radiance: Love after Death

Saturday, April 26th, 2014
  • Debra, what is your typical day like?
  • 1481370_1456700107900455_861958979_n
  • I usually wake up around 8 a.m. every morning here in good old North Carolina and do some stretches and I then let my dog Puppy, {yes, her name is Puppy, lol} out for a run. She’s a black lab that I have had for almost fourteen years. Then I watch the morning news, usually with a light breakfast and then I look at my list of things to do. I see which ones I can accomplish for that day and I go from there. The things on my list are usually research, working on different books or researching guest for my radio show called Sky Watchers. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/skywatchersradioshow
  • Do you write with music or not?
  • With music because it set’s the mood for emotion and depth to my characters. I like ambient relaxation music best.
  • Do you outline your manuscript first?
  • No, not really. I think of my style like putting a puzzle together. I may write the beginning and end and then fill in the spaces in-between. I jot down ideas as I go along. Crazy but it seems to work for me.
  • Debra what is the most difficult thing about being an author?
  • Keeping up with social media! Just when I master one thing like Pinterest, then another site pops up with something else to figure out. There are a lot of platforms out there to learn! I’m still trying to figure Twitter out.
  • I hear you. How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?
  • If every night when you go to bed your idea keeps nagging at you and taking on a life of its own, the idea has been “born.” You just have to write it down because you won’t have any peace until you do.
  • LOL. What is the title of your book?
  • 10269991_1458823311021468_851150598_n
  • The title of my book is Radiance: Love after Death.
  • Nice, what inspired you to write this book?
  • I was inspired to write it when I found a crooked heart-shaped stone in the grass one day after the break-up of my marriage. It reminded me that even though your heart is cracked or broken from a bad relationship, it’s still a heart and you can still love again. We all have and deserve a second chance.
  • Interesting. How do you come up with your character’s names?
  • Usually, the names just pop up in my head but if all else fails, I grab a phone book or baby names book. I tend to like unusual names rather than traditional ones.
  • Good for you. Tell us more about your book.
  • Marena Jacobs was in her forties and divorced after twenty years of marriage and she never imagined she would find herself alone. She thought her marriage was forever, not taken out of her grasp by a cheating husband. She pushed herself into her work, getting exhausted so she wouldn’t have to think about the pain of it all. One Friday evening after working late, she was on her way home. It was raining in torrents and streaks of lightening lit up the sky as she slowly drove towards Eden, North Carolina. She saw what looked like a boy walking in the rain and she had every intention of stopping and calling someone to see if he needed a ride. That was before her car stalled out, and her life changed forever. All she could do was feel herself floating, looking down on what had happened as the young boy, {who seemed enormously strong for someone his age} lifted her out of her car to save her. She thought her life was over until a radiant figure of someone or something stood before her. You will believe that true love never dies.
