Roslyn Welsh is sent by stagecoach to Junction City to marry a man with whom her aunt and guardian, without Roslyn’s knowledge, had been corresponding. His requirements for a wife were that she must be at least twenty-one years of age with a family Bible for proof, and she must have no children. Only, Roslyn is not quite twenty-one, she has a baby, and her aunt has no intention of sending the family Bible with her. The marriage prospect turns into a disaster. Stuck in a strange town with no money, she is told there is no work for a decent woman with a baby. To allow herself time to figure what to do with her future, Roslyn accepts an offer to ride the stagecoach to the Ellsworth B.O.D. Stagecoach station to help the stationmaster’s wife.
Elam Stewart survived the American Civil War, but his left leg from above the knee down did not. With no home to return to and realizing there are very few people willing to hire a man with only one good leg, he’s convinced he has no future. While working as a day laborer in the local Junction City livery, he becomes intrigued by a visitor named Ross who is anxious to spend time with the horses. Elam discovers Ross’s secret. Then he learns where Ross intends to seek work. Even though he does not have a future, he does have a Spencer repeating rifle. He can have a purpose.
Roslyn and Elam ride the same stagecoach to the Ellsworth Station on the Kansas frontier. Between resentments among the stock tenders, difficulties with animals that pass through the station, and the threat of attacks by the Cheyenne Native Americans, is there a future for Roslyn and Elam at the station? Or will their future take them on another stagecoach ride away from Ellsworth?
Please look for my other two books in the Widows, Brides & Secret Babies series, Mail Order Lorena and Mail Order Penelope, that will be published this summer. The three stories are related and part or all of them involve  the stagecoaches and stations on the Kansas frontier in the late 1860s.

Snippet:
Ross laughed in response—a laugh Elam now recognized as being feminine.
“I see what you mean.” She reached for a bridle. “Will this do for Sadie?”
“Yes, ma…” Elam cleared his throat. Get ahold of yourself, Elam. You almost said “ma’am.” Don’t know her reason for passing herself off as male, but it ain’t up to you to go calling her on it. “Reckon that will be fine, Mr. Welsh. You wanting me to saddle this here horse for you?” Why did I offer? Because I know she’s a woman? She already done said she could saddle and tack her own horse.

Surrounded by the blare of horns and the cries of street vendors, he resolved to close his practice, resign his university position, and move to Haiti.

Drawn and Driven
My Haiti Adventure
by Rod Ellis
Genre: Non Fiction Adventure
He was 61 years old. He had a secure position as a tenured associate professor at a major university. He had a bustling mental health practice. His home was loaded with equity. He drove and rode his dream vehicles, a Jeep Wrangler and a Victory Cross Country motorcycle. His son was set for college. Life was good. He could work for a few more years, then retire comfortably in his secluded country home.
One day everything changed. Sitting in a crowded bus jammed between stalled vehicles in a classic Port-au-Prince traffic jam, Rod Ellis decided to chuck it all. Surrounded by the blare of horns and the cries of street vendors, he resolved to close his practice, resign his university position, and move to Haiti.
What possessed him to do such a thing? How could he leave behind everything familiar for a world he knew only a little? Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. There would be no air conditioning or running water. He would drive a 20-year-old vehicle. He would reside in an unfinished house, at the mercy of tropical winds and weather. Light-skinned, he would live in a world of almost exclusively dark-skinned people. Whatever was he thinking? Drawn and Driven: My Haiti Adventure tells the tale. In it, Ellis describes his physical, emotional, and spiritual journey into a country he had visited only a handful of times. He talks about preparing for the move, the people he interacted with after arrival, and the challenges he has faced trying to help the wonderful people of this struggling country. From cultural conflicts to renegade priests to building his own off-the-grid house to the development of a vocational school, Ellis weaves the tale of his great, ongoing adventure: Drawn and Driven.
Rod Ellis retired from The University of Tennessee College of Social Work at the end of December 2016. He had served there for 17 years, as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Acting Associate Dean, and Coordinator of International Programs. During his time at UT, Rod published 6 books as writer, co-writer, or editor, as well as several articles in professional and academic journals. These were published under his full name and credentials, Rodney A. Ellis, PhD, MSW, MA.
For about two years prior to his retirement Rod had been making regular visits to Haiti with the American Haitian Foundation. Upon retirement, he moved to Petite Riviere de Nippes, Haiti where he has helped start churches, repair roads, start small businesses, and provide funding for students. He is currently director of a school that teaches conversational English and several vocational programs. He has also maintained a blog on his Facebook page since before his arrival in Haiti.
Rod is a member of Crossroads Community Church in Baxter, TN, where the folks prayed over him before his departure and continue to pray for him as he works in Haiti. Even today, Crossroads Community Church is still “holding the ropes.”

When a disaster transforms into a world of peril, she will have to learn to hear the Lord’s voice, even if it means she stands against the crowd

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Becca McCulloch is a wife, mother, professor, and writer but rarely in that order (if in any order at all). At night, she transitions from mild-mannered educator into mild-mannered artist, writing about LDS (Mormon) issues in a modern and complex world. In 2016, she won the Storymakers’ First Chapter Contest/General Fiction category. In 2019, her novel, Hermana, was named the General Fiction category winner for the LDS Publishers Media Association.

Becca resides in Utah with her husband, 2 children, Great Dane, two cats, and a pesky, yet friendly raccoon that won’t leave the outdoor shed.
WINNER! 2019 general fiction book of the year from the LDS Publishers Media Association.

Bookish and street-smart Lannie Lewis wants to be more than the child of a broken home who flunked out of music school. Full-time mission service will carry her away from the problems with her dad and immerse her hands in the work of God, or, it would if she’d stop hiding in the bathroom and wishing the island had better bug spray. When a disaster transforms her mission into a world of peril and overwhelming need, she will have to learn to hear the Lord’s voice for herself, even if it means she stands against the crowd.
~ Universal Amazon Link

Snippet:
As Hermana Stathos announces the prayer, a giant, moth-like insect lands next to her on her chair. Its wings stretch like two pieces of recycled paper fastened to a metal binding. Its antennae rustle the fabric on Hermana Stathos’ silky skirt. The woman gurgles with wide eyes, and then falls silent. She drops the prayer announcement without naming the speaker, and, instead, scoots herself and her skirt over three inches to accommodate the creature. Her eyes grow wider with each panicked sweep of our faces.
One of the Dominican trainers rushes in to scoop the bug away. The insect rests on the young woman’s hands. Its wings click against her black badge. She releases the moth with the care I might take with a kitten or puppy.
Hermana Stathos’ shoulders sink two inches once the creature is gone, but her spine remains perfectly straight. Then she talks about yeast infection. No joke. She forgets the prayer and jumps right into fungal overgrowth. If my mom were here, everything from the giant bug to confirmed fears about fungi would have her giggling throughout the whole meeting.

Snippet:
“Have you ever heard of Countess Fercandia, Kay?” she asked as they walked down the corridor heading toward the eastern section of the castle, Kay’s boots clicking on the tiles.
“No, Mother, I’m sorry I haven’t.”
“She’s an old countess from long ago when the Vith still had to fight the Haitathe to survive. Countess Fercandia was a warrior who fought at her lord’s side, and she fought with a CARG, just like he did. Her CARG wasn’t big and heavy like her lord’s. It was smaller and lighter, something that she could use. It was still a CARG, just different. I wanted you to see it. I thought you might be inspired.” Her face filled with motherly love and pride. She touched his cheek. “And, maybe you wouldn’t be so hard on yourself. Look at you, just a little boy, yet so burdened. I can sense it, Kay. I know you’ve been hurting.”

Book Trailer:

I grew up with a pretty normal childhood, running barefoot in the Appalachian mountains, playing with turtles and innocently killing them by leaving them on their backs so I could play house with them again the next day. I don’t think I always dreamed of being an author. It was just something I did. I made up stories about my dead turtles. I named my fingers and let them battle out family feuds. I wrote about myself in my journal when what I wished would happen was better than what actually did (sorry, Mom for the scare. I still promise I never really snuck over to a party and kissed my brothers friend). What a wonderful surprise when something “I just did” suddenly became something others enjoyed. I’m so forever grateful to my publisher for giving me a chance to share my not-so-normal stories with the whole world.

When we don’t make the right decisions, the guilt may be overwhelming, but it takes courage to continue

Monday, June 1st, 2020

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.

When we don’t make the right decisions, the guilt may be overwhelming, but it takes courage to continue.
Guinevere stood back, away from the other knights, while Arthur and Merlyn negotiated with the sea people. She glanced from time to time at Cedwyn’s father, but he ignored her as did the others. She approached the small group of knights hoping to talk with Sir Derwyn.
As imposing as Brynwyn, Cedwyn’s father towered over her. His shirt, covering his battle gambeson, made him appear bigger and more fearful. She had just opened her mouth when his stare prevented her from speaking. His words were not comforting.
“Lady Guinevere, do not say a word. For as long as I’ve known you, which has been your whole life, you have always been headstrong. No,” he said raising his hand, “don’t say anything. I know this isn’t all your fault, however, that doesn’t change the fact that now my son, my only son, my heir, has been taken prisoner, and is somewhere across that dark water in the land of Gaul.” He paused trying to find his words. “I don’t know whether we’ll find him, or if we do, whether he will be alive or dead. I do know Brynwyn will never forgive me if I don’t bring him back safe.”
“I’m so sorry, Sir Derwyn.” Not finding herself silenced, she continued, “I never meant for this to happen. I tried…”
“I’m sure you did, but had you done as you were told in the beginning, we would not be standing here now.” He paused again, weighing his words. “You may be our future queen, but right now you are just a stubborn princess who believes she can do what she wants without any consequences. And that, young lady, is not true. You must have some qualities that enlisted the loyalty of my son, but those escape me. I only hope that my son, and your friend, is not lost to us forever.” With that he turned from the group and went to stand alone.
The ache in her chest grew. Guinevere struggled to breathe, to remain standing. Guilt washed over her threatening to drown her and put an end to her life. Never had she ever felt such a weight.
Oh, my Lady, do not let the words of a hurt father crush you. Sir Derwyn blames himself as much as you. You see, the loyalty his son has to you is no different from the loyalty he has to your father. He is proud of Cedwyn, but he is also afraid. Stay strong, Guinevere.

Bigfoot Lives Book 1
by Becky Cook
Genre: Nonfiction, True Story Encounters
It’s late at night and you are sitting around a campfire when someone starts telling yet another Bigfoot story.

You ask yourself – are they really real?
If you have ever wondered if Bigfoot exists, this is the book to read to find out. He not only exists, he lives and thrives here in Idaho.
This book captures a cross section of stories from across the state. They tell the tale of sightings – the smell, the size, where they were and how it happened.
“… he was easily seven and a half feet tall and roughly 800 pounds of muscles and hair – not any fat on him. It had both dark hair and dark eyes and it was obviously a male. It seemed unconcerned … “
“If he wanted to he could have ripped me in half,”
So what really happened? Are they really real?
Read the book and decide yourself.

Bigfoot Lives Forever in Idaho
Bigfoot Lives Book 3
All of us have had moments where life is suspended in time, when life seems frozen in an amazing snap shot. Occasionally we pull that experience out from the recesses of our mind – to look at it, to savor it, and to experience it again. It is at times like these when you wonder if you really saw what you think you just saw, like those times where you just can’t quite believe your eyes – like say, when you saw your first Bigfoot.
“It was bigger than anything I have ever seen – really tall and furry from head to toe! It was just so surprising – I didn’t expect to run into anything on a trip to the bathroom.”
“They are smart, and they can sit still for a really long time. Besides, they have the whole forest to hide in; no wonder people don’t see them real often.”
“I didn’t believe in Bigfoot, I thought it was a hoax. Now I believe it and I look at every bear track differently. I know they are up there. It’s one thing to think you see it and it’s another thing entirely to have one scare you half to death! Why lie when the truth is so much more amazing?”
Read along as more stories are told of the amazing Bigfoot who have been seen right here in Idaho – some of them near your own home.

Slumberland
By Derra Nicole Sabo
Genre: Biography
How do you dream? Are your dreams in color or black n’ white? Do they feel surreal or all too real?
Well, I’d like to introduce you to my little slice of bittersweet. These subconscious woods hold every fear and my anxieties masked are as wolves. Nightmares that play on a loop for weeks, even months at a time. Symptoms of waking in cold sweats and shaking. The only moments of peace are found in the sporadically studded dreams that happen every now and again. These woods house every past demon as well as certain past versions of who I once was. This place is worse than death, yet it inspires. So…
…Before my alarm clock goes off, before I take the last train out of here, I take one last glance back, one last glance at all of the Polaroids pinned to every tree branch, polaroids of every dream and nightmare that have stolen my nights since ’95…
These dreams…these woods…this place…it’s my upside down…
This is my Slumberland…
