eye, and leader of a diving and salvage team, Dagger promises to

research becomes clear, Riley begins to believe there’s no one she
can trust–not with her life, her heart, or her mother’s legacy.

Everything and everyone important to Tom is threatened unless he can solve the mysteries of the Kadohadacho

Tuesday, August 27th, 2019
Kado:
Lost Treasure of the Kadohadacho
by
E.Russell Braziel
Genre:
YA Historical Adventure

KADO – Lost Treasure
of the Kadohadacho is the saga of eighteen-year old Tom Murrell, who
in 1818 strikes out with his family from Tennessee to the “Arkansaw”
Territory to build a new life in the frontier west of the
Mississippi. Tom’s father, John Murrell, plans to carve a homestead
out of the wilderness, but Tom wants no part of it. He wants to do
something else with his life besides spend it behind a plow, but it
seems he has no choice in the matter. Their expedition would take the
Murrell family and their traveling companions through the perilous
Great Raft, a 100-mile tangle of broken trees, stumps and hidden
perils between Natchitoches, the last civilized town on their journey
and Long Prairie, their destination on the banks of the Red River.
Everything changes
for Tom and John when they encounter an Indian massacre — four Osage
are murdering a Kado Xinesi (high priest), and his guide. Trying to
save the Kado, Tom is forced to kill one of the Osage braves and is
almost killed himself. Before Tiatesun, the Kado holy man dies, he
makes Tom his blood brother and draws a map in his own blood in
John’s Bible to some place called Na-Da-cah-ah. Tiatesun wants them
to somehow get the map to his tribal elders. This draws Tom into a
raging conflict between the Kado and their arch enemies, the Osage.
His new friends Mattie and James say there is no alternative. They
must use the map to find Na-Da-cah-ah. Only then can Tom be sure that
his family and friends will be safe.
But it is a race
against time – a race against Wey Chutta’s band of renegade
Osage. Dangers are everywhere. The only chance to save his family is
for Tom, Mattie and James to join with six Kado warriors, make sense
from the map and the many clues they uncover on their quest, and
discover the real Na-Da-cah-ah. It could already be too late. Because
the Osage know more than they should. Everything and everyone
important to Tom is threatened unless he can solve the mysteries of
the Kadohadacho.

He quickly realizes that the dignity of life has little meaning, and where he can trust no one

Monday, August 26th, 2019
The
Dung Beetles of Liberia
by
Daniel V. Meier Jr.
Genre:
Adventure, Historical Fiction

Based
on the remarkable true account of a young American who landed in
Liberia in 1961.

Ken
Verrier is not happy, nor at peace. He is experiencing the turbulence
of Ishmael and the guilt of his brother’s death. His sudden decision
to drop out of college and deal with his demons shocks his family,
his friends, and especially his girlfriend, soon to have been his
fiancee. His destination: Liberia – The richest country in Africa
both in monetary wealth and in natural resources.

Nothing
could have prepared Ken for the experiences he was about to live
through. He quickly realizes that he has arrived in a place where he
understands very little of what is considered normal, where the
dignity of life has little meaning, and where he can trust no
one.

Flying
into the interior bush as a transport pilot, Ken learns quickly. He
witnesses first-hand the disparate lives of the Liberian “Country
People” and the “Congo People” also known as
Americo-Liberians. These descendants of President Monroe’s American
Colonization Policy that sent freed slaves back to Africa in the
1800’s have set up a strict hierarchical society not unlike the
antebellum South.

Author
Dan Meier describes Ken’s many escapades, spanning from horrifying to
whimsical, with engaging and fast-moving narrative that ultimately
describe a society upon which the wealthy are feeding and in which
the poor are being buried.

It’s
a novel that will stay will you long after the last word has been
read.

Kat
Varn’s
 love
affair with words manifested when she turned four and taught herself
to read. As she grew older, books and reading were an escape from
responsibility.  As the oldest daughter in a transient Navy
family, words fed her imagination to embrace adventure and magical
worlds. Kat was drawn to the strength of little girls in
The
Little Princess
 and The
Secret Garden
.
Eventually,
Kat dove into journaling between the pages of beautiful leather
notebooks, recording her children’s infant landmarks. Journaling
also helped her find solace in the grief of a toxic relationship.
Throughout her journey to extract her family from oppression, she
explored the idea of freedom through allegorical short stories. In
the midst of angst and soul searching, she retained a sense of humor
that gave her the resilience to pursue the search for her true self.
Kat
hopes her readers enjoy Ameera’s journey to pursue the forbidden
zone of dance while becoming part of a larger experience—embraced
and bonded to eight glittery belly dancers. Each of them aware they
may have never met without the common denominator of a six-week belly
dance class under the tutelage of their troupe director.
Kat
is now very happily married to her soulmate. She resides in
Charleston, South Carolina, where she worked for an adoption attorney
for twenty-three years. With her two children settled in adulthood,
she is exploring a beautiful world, from scuba diving in Fiji or
photographing from Alaska’s frozen tundra.

When he learns that thousands of his people will be sent as slaves to the mines, he must choose—fight the royal army or win the help of his kin

Friday, August 2nd, 2019
By day Yosyph appears nothing more than a mute
tavern-hand. By night he is the shadowy leader of a growing revolution.

When he learns that thousands of his people will be
sent as slaves to the mines, he must choose—fight the royal army with an
ill-prepared rebellion or journey to the land of his ancestors through the
deadly King’s Trial, where he hopes to win the help of his kin.
His journey grows complicated when he rescues a
maiden and enrages a prince, but if he doesn’t return with help in time, the
people he’s loved and secretly served will be gone.

As a youth, I made up stories to help my little
sisters go to sleep. It backfired. We stayed up for hours continuing the tale.
The King’s Trial was born in those late, whispered nights.

Ever since I climbed up to the rafters of our barn
at age four, I’ve lived high adventure: scuba diving, mud football with my
brothers, rappelling, and even riding a retired racehorse at full
gallop—bareback. I love the thrill and joy.
Stories give me a similar thrill and joy. I love
living through the eyes and heart of a hero who faces his internal demons and
the heroine who fights her way free instead of waiting to be saved. I read
fiction and true-story adventure. I write both, though I’m starting with
publishing the fiction—fact will come later.

I create high fantasy, fairy tale retellings, and
poetry. I live a joyful adventure with my husband and six children. I am a
Christian and I love my Savior.

Top Ten List

  1. As a child, I couldn’t walk across a room. I danced, spun, skipped, ran, or otherwise moved, but I couldn’t just walk.
  2. I took calculus at a community college at age 14. I planned to go to MIT and become an astronaut. Plans changed—in wonderful ways.

  1. I love reading to my children. We’ve enjoyed books from Dr. Seuss to Les Misérables. Maniac Magee is one of our favorites.
  2. I lived in St Petersburg, Russia for half-a-year teaching English to kindergartners. I learned to wash my clothes in a bathtub, filter and boil my drinking water, and love my sweet, crayon-eating, kids.
  3. I have slight dyslexia. ‘b’ and ‘p’ sometimes flip flop on me. But it also means I can read a book upside-down.
  4. I love climbing, rappelling, and horseback riding. But I hate roller coasters and bungee jumping.

  1. I’ve journaled almost every day since I turned seventeen. I capture conversations, descriptions, happenings, and quotes. I explore ideas. Through the years I’ve written well over a million words. It prepared me to become an author.
  2. Plumbing Repair is my nemesis. I’m grateful I don’t have to battle it very often. In the end, I always win, but I feel like I’ve fought an archvillain who pulled every dirty trick in the book, including Chinese water torture in claustrophobic conditions.

  1. I live with a vivid imagination. I dream in 3-D, technicolor, and occasionally with my eyes open. This is a bane when it comes to nightmares. I will not watch horror movies.
  2. The King’s Trial started as a bedtime tale I told my little sisters twenty years ago. Don’t worry. I wrote the second book, The King’s Shadow,in six months, and it will come out this autumn.

Plus an extra: I have an accent. People often ask me where I’m from. Maybe it’s my reader accent. I’ve read out-loud enough different books in character, that perhaps it stuck.

Jeffrey Bardwell is the author of The Scion’s Delight, a prequel to his Mage Conspiracy series

Friday, August 2nd, 2019

Jeffrey, welcome to my blog. How long have you been writing?

I have been publishing fantasy novels since 2017. The actual writing began when I was six, a few decades earlier.

Tell us where you were born and where do you live now.

I was raised in a rural town in northern Virginia, bounced arund the country a bit from Texas to Missouri, and then landed back in a different small town in central Virginia. Life is funny like that.

How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?

If it sticks in my mind after the notion / dream / inspiration strikes, and I want to find out more, it’s a keeper.

Who has made the greatest difference for you as a writer?

My beta readers have helped spur a marked improvement in my writing. My first book was a hot mess.

What is the name of your book?

My new book is The Scion’s Delight, the prequel to my Mage Conspiracy series. It was inspired by a dream about a haughty princess trying to repair her broken death maze to torture rats. When I realized she was the younger incarnation of the evil empress in my main series, I knew I had a good story brewing.

Tell us more about it. Perhaps a back cover blurb.

A cunning trap. A whiff of magic. A burst of steam.

Princess Cordelia has steel plate ambition, a mind like twisting brass gears, and the political might of tin foil. The girl aims to ratchet the Iron Empire into a glorious new day of gears and steam. The entire palace is arrayed against her. The chambermaids disdain her. The emperor ignores her. The mages, championed by Lord Oriolanus, lead a brisk campaign of lies and coercion. Those evil magic users threaten to tighten their grip upon the land even though machines are clearly superior. By the gods’ oil-stained hands, why can’t anyone else see her vision of the ideal future?

Just when Cordelia’s future threatens to slip back into medieval quagmire, a lone stranger with ice blue eyes and flowing blond hair arrives from the savage north. The handsome barbarian is destined to make both the hearts of the empire and the princess tremble. Does this spell doom or salvation for the girl’s fragile dream?

Explore The Scion’s Delight, the fantasy romance prequel novella of The Mage Conspiracy series. Discover a world of adventure and intrigue where lies cut deeper than any sword.

Do you have a favorite character, why?

In this new book, I think Cordelia’s retiring servant Fortinbras is my favorite. His name is an homage to a character from one of my favorite fantasy authors growing up (email the correct guess who to jhbardwell@gmail.com for a free ebook!), and his deadpan pissing contest with the ruler of an empire was a joy to write.

Here is the other books in the The Mage Conspiracy

Book one

Book two

Book three

What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?

I write to edify and enlighten, but most of all to entertain. I think Erin Kahn said it much, much better than I can: A book by Jeffrey Bardwell is always a good time: exciting, dangerous, gritty, and multi-layered . . . fast-paced, entertaining, and psychologically intense.

Do you have any advice for authors trying to break into the industry?

Keep writing. Don’t be afraid to push yourself out there. Your first book will probably suck. Write another. I went back and rewrote the first book in my Artifice Mage series three times before I was happy with it (and the book truly deserved the title “epic” fantasy.)

Where can we find your book?

  1. What is your favorite color?

Blue and grey. I love the ocean and those colors remind me of it.

  1. Favorite holiday?

The one where I get a nap! 😉

  1. Most embarrassing moment?

Oh geez, let me see if I can keep this short. I worked in the kitchens of the MTC in provo during my years at BYU. One time we threw away a TON of cream of wheat into a single garbage can. When I went to take it outside, I couldn’t lift the garbage into the compactor. Well, being the strong independent woman I was, I refused to go in and ask for help. So I leaned the lip of the garbage against the compactor and then hefted it up from the bottom wheels. When I got it up, I shook it hard to release the bag of garbage. The problem? The wheels weren’t attached! So the whole garbage can slid into the compactor. As I stood there in shock, another worker, a boy, came out. Much to my embarrassment, we ended up climbing into the compactor together, slipping and sliding in all that nasty gunk (don’t even ask how it smelled!) to retrieve the can. Just as we climbed out a delivery truck arrived, allowing even more people to see my humiliation. *forehead slap* I’ll never forget that day. It’s burned into my memory with a laser!

  1. Dream vacation?

Ooh. I love the ocean and heat. So anywhere tropical. Hawaii has been a favorite so far, but I’m open to anywhere warm and sandy with a great pina colada!

  1. Something unique about you?

Hmm… I’m not a terribly interesting person, but I can say that I was an opera major at college! I studied Vocal Performance in opera/classical music for 3 years before I got married and had to leave BYU. I ended up finishing my degree online with a Creative Writing degree, which is how I ended up as an author. But I still sing on the side.

  1. What one food will you NOT eat?

Oysters or snails. *cue shiver* can’t do it. Nope, nope, nope.

  1. All-time favorite book?

Okay, that’s hard. I have favorite books in completely separate genres that I adore! But I will say that I have one book I read over and over again. It’s called “A Kiss with Scandal” and it’s by Janelle Daniels. I LOVE books full of romance and kissing, with some action on the side. And this book delivers that.

  1. Writing snack of choice?

I actually don’t snack while I write. But it’s not uncommon for me to treat myself to something sweet and chocolate when I’m done!

  1. Top hobby you do when not writing?

Back to the singing. I perform some and I dabble in arranging and writing, so that’s definitely where I head when I’m not on the computer.

  1. Favorite Animal?

Baby animals. Anything cute and fluffy and little. 🙂

The Dream Defenders… discover a book with a fresh voice, genuinely humorous characters, and a compelling, original storyline

The
Dream Defenders
by
Neal DenHartog
Genre:
YA Fantasy

A
vivid, dangerous dream world. Real-life consequences. Better ready
your defense.

When
fourteen-year-old Nolan Erling wakes up with a headache for the
fourth straight day, he suspects the likely culprit to be any number
of things—from his annoying baby brother, to vehicular crashes with
his elderly neighbor, or even his questionable late-night food
choices—not his dreams.

Aeryn
Sandman knows the true cause, though. She is a junior agent with the
DREAM Institute, a secret organization tasked with protecting the
world’s population while they sleep, and she’s on her first
assignment.

Her
mission: infiltrate Nolan’s life—and his dreams—and keep him
safe, all while persuading him to join their protective force.

But
recruitment missions are no walk in the park, and Aeryn’s goes
horribly wrong when Nolan’s powers unwittingly unleash two dream
creatures locked away in a restricted area of the dream world. While
Aeryn and Nolan search for ways to contain the escaped beings, they
uncover a much greater conspiracy.

For
these dreams can kill, and someone is orchestrating their actions in
the dream world. If Aeryn and Nolan can’t figure out who is behind
it, no dreamer will be safe, and neither will the organization that
defends them.

Discover
a book with a fresh voice, genuinely humorous characters, and a
compelling, original storyline. The Dream Defenders will
appeal to readers of all ages.
