I don’t care if he’s the Prime Minister, that racket must stop

Wednesday, June 19th, 2019

Nurse Trudy Genova is making plans to
take her relationship to NYPD detective Ned O’Malley to the next level, when
she lands a gig as medical consultant on a film shoot at the famed Dakota
apartment building in Manhattan, which John Lennon once called home. Then star
Monica Kiley goes missing, a cast member turns up dead, and it appears Trudy
might be next. Meanwhile Ned tackles a mysterious murder case in which the
victim is burned beyond recognition. When his investigations lead him back to
the Dakota, Trudy finds herself wondering: how can she fall in love if she
can’t even survive?
Readers of Death Unscripted, the first
book in the Trudy Genova Manhattan Mystery series, will find the same pleasures
in this sequel: fast pacing, engaging characters, twists and turns on the way
to a satisfying close. From the award-winning author of The Nora Tierney
English Mysteries, this second series is a winner. Once again M.K. Graff
reveals her talents in crafting this delightful mix of amateur sleuth and
police procedural.
Part procedural, part cozy, Death at
the Dakota is a well-crafted and highly entertaining mystery
.- Bruce Robert
Coffin, #1 bestselling author of the Detective Byron mysteries.
I fell in love — not only with
co-protagonists, Trudy and Ned, the richly detailed and historic setting of The
Dakota, and the unique cast of characters, but with the unusual plot of Death
at the Dakota.

Winston Garage Sale Mysteries

My Review

I read another of The Trudy Genova Manhattan Mysteries, some time ago and enjoyed her feisty kind of approach to murder. For a moment I thought this was the same, but within the first page I realized, to my surprise, that I had stumbled on another of her series.

Trudy is a nurse that has the best job ever. She corrects scripts for movies or TV series and makes sure the medical details are accurate and precise. In this book we find her as the nurse in charge of the main actress Monica. She is with child, but not many people on the set know about it. Trudy’s job is help her stay out of stress, which makes Trudy’s job a challenge as Monica’s life may be in danger.

I enjoyed that she remains with Ned, her Police boyfriend and things are progressing between them. The story line if well done and progresses without a flaw. Characters are well rounded and the story is clean enough. I would say PG13.
I would recommend it, to murder mystery and movie lovers in general.

Snippet:
Brrerrdidididididitt.
Brrerrdidididididdiitt. The noise of a jackhammer filled the spacious room.
“CUT!” a voice yelled.
Actress Monica Kelly let the curtain
drop along with her Jinx persona and crossed her arms in frustration.
I caught my best friend Meg Pitman’s
eye and we held our breath, waiting for an outburst from the director.
Phin Hill-Yorke stomped out from
behind the camera and over to the window, gangly arms and legs flying, frizzy
short hair stuck up around her head as though she’d had a recent encounter with
an electrical socket. “Meg!”
Poor Meg, off to the rescue.
My name is Trudy Genova, RN, and I’m
fortunate to have one of the best jobs a nurse could have. I’m a medical
consultant to one of New York City’s major television studios, the Passion
Broadcasting Junction. PBJ had decided to branch out into television films,
adding to their roster of talk, news programs, and Internet soap operas.
Meg had her first position as
Production Assistant on this movie, and the British director on loan from the
BBC had given her a battering at times all through the shoot. Not that the
rowdy woman singled out Meg. Phin embodied an equal opportunity harasser in a
mostly good-natured sort of way.
“Get your arse down there and sort
those wankers out. They were supposed to hold off on that pavement ’til next
week. Bring that form from the chancellor’s office with you.” Phin yelled above
the noise that continued, patting her pockets for a cigarette. “Please,” she
added as an afterthought.
Meg hurried off with a wave in my
direction, silky blonde hair flying.
“It’s the mayor’s office here, Phin.”
China Barrett corrected Phin from her perch next to me, out of camera range.
Phin’s assistant and I exchanged tiny smiles, co-conspirators for the past six
weeks in the filming of this television movie close to wrapping.
“I don’t care if he’s the Prime
Minister, that racket must stop.” Phin consulted her watch. “Loo breaks all
around while we sort this out, boys and girls.”

Their last hope at saving Matt’s life will require a sacrifice from each of them

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

Laurie (L.C.) Lewis will always be a Marylander at heart—a weather-whining lover of crabs, American history, and the sea. She admits to being craft-challenged, particularly lethal with a glue gun, and a devotee of sappy movies. Her ninth published novel, her first romance novella, Sweet Water, was inspired by a visit to Oregon’s magnificent coastline, and time spent with Mother Eugenie, upon whom the character Mother Thomasine is based.

Laurie’s women’s fiction novels include The Dragons of Alsace Farm (2016), Awakening Avery (2010), and Unspoken (2004), written as Laurie Lewis.

Using the pen name L.C. Lewis, she wrote the five volumes of her award-winning FREE MEN and DREAMERS historical fiction series, set against the backdrop of the War of 1812: Dark Sky at Dawn (2007), Twilight’s Last Gleaming (2008), Dawn’s Early Light (2009), Oh, Say Can You See? (2010), and In God is Our Trust, (2011).

She is currently completing a political suspense novel planned for a summer 2017 release, a re -release of a romantic comedy, and she’s working on another historical fiction novel for a 2018 release. She loves to hear from readers.

Matthew Grayken is young, successful, and dying, which is why he’s about to propose to a total stranger. He isn’t interested in love. He needs a caregiver, a companion, and someone to be his legal voice when he can no longer speak for himself.

Lonely, compassionate nurse Mikaela Compton is intrigued by Matt Grayken’s tender request, but when their friendly marriage turns into love, she rejects the inevitability of Matt’s death and prays for a miracle instead.

Mikaela succeeds in reigniting Matt’s will to fight, but his body is losing the battle, and her determination to save him causes her to betray the fundamental promise she made him–to help him die peaceably.

Their last hope at saving Matt’s life will require a sacrifice from each of them, and force them to decide how far out on a limb they’re willing to go for love.

Snippet:
After breakfast, they drove to Union Station and picked up Matt’s car. After dropping Mikaela’s car off, they took the Range Rover to go table shopping. Matt was so moved by the joy she found in sharing that small adventure that they spent the rest of the afternoon in the crisp late September air, strolling Georgetown’s curio shops, buying art prints and kitchen gadgets.
Mikaela pulled him into a Christmas shop bedecked with lights and steeped in the scent of balsam. Like radar, she zoned in on the trees laden with Christmas ornaments, some elegant, some merely for fun. She moved from tree to tree, swooning over one decoration after another. Matt used a variety of excuses to leave the store and wait for her down the street, but she clamped her hand over his arm and dragged him to a regally-bedecked twelve-foot tree that mocked his fear of spending Christmas in a pine box.
Mikaela dangled several whimsical ornaments before Matt’s eyes, swooning over each one before selecting a few. The more her enthusiasm bubbled, the harder he found it to breathe. He wondered if he’d live long enough to see the blasted baubles adorn a tree.
“You don’t love them.”
“Get whatever you like.” He heard the irritation in his voice and tried to mask it with a half-smile.
“Do you think these are gaudy? You probably grew up with an elegant tree?”
“Isn’t it a little early to be thinking about Christmas?” He batted a clay cupcake dangling from a silver cord. “If you need to do this now, why not just buy a matched set of gold balls?”
“Because these are memories.” Mikaela’s eyes brightened like the twinkle lights on the tree.
For the first time, he noticed what ornaments dangled from her left hand—a bride and groom, a heart, a plane, a helicopter, a taxi, the New York City skyline, and a tacky-looking crab ornament with “Baltimore” painted across it—mementoes of the short time they’d already spent together. A chill coursed through him as he realized the marital sentiment she was expressing.
Her other hand held an assortment of ornaments representing places they’d never been and things they’d never done. Mikaela had selected three balls painted with D.C. scenes—the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Capitol. These were easy destinations mere blocks from the house. The other ornaments were completely random—a picnic table with tiny dishes and food set upon it, a movie theater ticket made from clay, a canoe, a bowling pin set, and a golden star.
He cocked his head sideways and drank in her slightly crooked smile, the gold flecks in her eyes, the whimsical mop of hair that flopped to the left. “But we’ve never—”
“But we will! We’ll make a list and do these things together.”
Her enthusiasm gave him the courage to likewise suspend medical reality and join in her denial. He found a pair of red lips and a puppy ornament. “What do you think? First kiss? And I think we should get a dog.”
“Uhhh. . . Okay on the lips, but we should discuss the matter before actually purchasing a living thing.” She held up a boat ornament and a pair of pot-bellied old timers seated in front of a TV.
Matt eyed them as a knot grew in his throat. “You and me in fifty years?”
“Eighty. No way I’m letting you look like that in fifty.”

He caught the sheen in her eyes, the denied tear she wiped away when grousing about catching a speck of glitter in her lashes, but he knew that they were living on wishes and dreams.

Christmas Season 2018
I tiptoed past my sleeping daughter, her arms still wrapped around Mr. Snuggles, her cheeks flushed from crying, and into the hallway, then down the stairs where my purse still lay in the wingback chair. After pulling out my phone, I called Jackson, then held my breath, wondering if he would bother to answer.
“I’m too tired for round two,” he said as a sleepy hello.
“I’m not calling for that,” I said, keeping my voice low. “I wanted you to know that Sara came home early. She—she um . . . she’s pretty upset. Billy broke up with her today.”
Jackson sighed deeply from the other end. “Oh, man. Did she say why?”
“Something about it being too long between marriage and his degree or some such nonsense. But she—”
When I didn’t finish my thought, he asked, “What? She what?” “Well,” I said, easing back in the chair, “She indicated that—I don’t think anything has, you know, happened between them.”
His groan lasted what felt like a full minute. “Felicia, honestly. Is that all you ever worry about?”
I frowned. Out of the three of us—them and me—which of us was right? Could it be as they’d always said? Had I let my fears get the better of me? Had it tainted my views on everything? “Now you sound like Sara,” I admitted. Or had she sounded like him?
“At least she’s still got her good sense then. And if I know our daughter, like her old man, she’ll pull herself up by her bootstraps and be fine. By this time tomorrow, Billy what’s-his-name will be just that. Nothing but a faint memory.”
Like her old man? “Is that what’s happened with us? Have you pulled yourself up by your bootstraps? Are you fine without us?”
He growled. “Felicia—”
“Jackson, I didn’t call to have a tug of war with words.” I crossed my legs.
“Then why did you call?”
“Because,” I said as though my reasoning should be obvious. “Sara is your daughter too. And I thought you’d want to know.”
“Of course I want to know.”
“And for your information, that is not all I worry about. I just don’t want—”
“What?” he asked. And when I didn’t answer—when I couldn’t answer for the knot forming in my throat—he answered for me. “You don’t want her to end up like you? Pregnant and married? Not because she’s in love and can’t see the raw future for the stars in her eyes but because it’s expected of her? My gosh, Felicia, I thought we’d gotten past all that. I thought we’d built something and built it out of nothing. Those kids of ours didn’t come out of three one-night stands, you know.”
My jaw flexed. “I don’t have to sit here and listen to this, Jackson. I only wanted you to know—”
“Thank you, then. Thank you for telling me. I’ll come by in the morning before work to check on her.”
 “I doubt she’ll be awake . . .”
“Then I’ll text her in the morning and see if she wants to meet for lunch.” He waited a breath before adding. “Leesha . . .”
“What,” I whispered.
“Don’t think for one minute that I haven’t been in love with you since senior year. That night—the night after Dad died—may not have been our wisest move, but I don’t regret it. Not for one second.”
I squeezed my eyes shut against his words. Hot tears pushed past my lashes and made their way down my cheeks.

“I can only pray that one day you’ll feel the same way. One thing I’ve learned in all this is that God uses everything, Felicia. Even our mess-ups.”

In need of his own redemption, Noah Carter finally confronts his childhood hero, the once-beloved uncle who betrayed him. Instead of vengeance, he offers forgiveness, also granting Uncle John a most curious request—for Noah to work on the ramshackle farm of Agnes Deveraux Keller, a French WWII survivor with dementia.
Despite all Agnes has lost, she still has much to teach Noah. But the pair’s unique friendship is threatened when Tayte, Agnes’s estranged granddaughter, arrives to claim a woman whose circumstances and abilities are far different from those of the grandmother she once knew.
Items hidden in Agnes’s attic raise painful questions about Tayte’s dead parents, steeling Tayte’s determination to save Agnes, even if it requires her to betray the very woman she came to save, and the secret her proud grandmother has guarded for seventy years.

The issue strains the fragile trust between Tayte and Noah, who now realizes Tayte is fighting her own secrets, her own dragons. Weighed down by past guilt and failures, he feels ill-equipped to help either woman, until he remembers Agnes’s lessons about courage and love. In order to save Agnes, the student must now become the teacher, helping Tayte heal—for Agnes’s sake, and for his.

Snippet:
“You were amazing, Agnes . . . so brave. You knew just what to do.”
She smiled. “I am all they have. Being needed makes you brave. Sometimes we simply do what we must. But then, you know a bit about that as well, don’t you?”
Noah looked at his pocked arms. “You mean my scars?”
“From cigarettes??”
Noah’s lips pursed as he remembered the feel of the burns. “It was my father’s way of motivating me.”
“Beast.” It was spoken like a curse, and it made Noah smile. “The shame is his. Not yours.”
Noah undid the ties that fastened the three-inch-wide leather band worn over his wrist. Beneath it were rows of straight scars. “Not just his, Agnes. I did these myself.” He felt his face burn with shame.
Agnes leaned on her shovel and searched an unknown spot in the sky. “When the bombings ended, only one tree remained in the park near my house. Everyone said we should protect it and honor it. I went out at night and threw rocks at it. I pulled on its branches and tried to kill it because I thought, better I should kill it than wait for the dragons to return and destroy this one also.”
Now Noah understood. “The Nazis were the dragons?”
“There are many dragons, mon cher. You fought yours in the only way you knew how, but that war is over now.”
“You think so?”

Agnes walked to him and placed a wrinkled hand on his cheek. “You slew your dragons. I can see peace in your eyes.”

Princess
Nevaeh
by
Paulette Harper
Genre:
Children’s Picture Book

Six
year old Nevaeh wants to be something she already is —a princess.
Do you know a little girl that doesn’t know she is loved or even
beautiful? Do we as parents, grandparents, or guardians reinforce and
give our little ones daily affirmation? Princess Nevaeh, Lessons on
Self-Discovery covers topics that are important not only to parents
but also to our little girls.

Find
out how Mimi shares with her granddaughter the things that matter
most. Some of the topics discussed in this book are:

Teaching
behavioral skills: fighting, bullying, listening, and
obeying.

Reinforces
manners.

Teaches
self-worth and values.

Princess
Nevaeh, Lessons on Self-Discovery allows caregivers to use this as a
tool to affirm the child, build positive dialogue and to encourage
self-worth.

My Review:

Nevae is a little girl who wants to be a princess. She goes to her grandmother and asks her what she needs to do to become a princess. Her grandmother tells her some things that will make her a better person and a princess. Bullying it isn’t a princess-like attribute, nor is name calling and being mean.

The book is colorful and entertaining to children from two years old and up. It is an easy read and well done. It will become a favorite for your little girls who dream of being a princess. It has good principles and morals.

Unwelcome
The
Shadow World Volume 1
Racquel
is unique. The bloodlines of four of the most powerful beings in the
Shadow World are intertwined within her DNA. She has never craved
attention. She just wants to be able to live as normal life as she
can. But she’s about to find that even though she’s uniquely
unwelcome wherever she goes, her abilities also make her the best
chance the Shadow World has to stop a threat to all the Shadow races.
Once arriving home, Racquel finds that greater evils exist and that
the person she cares for most in this world, her half-sister Addie,
has been kidnapped along with other Shadow World beings. Racquel
finds herself facing horrible odds with those who would rather see
her dead than alive. As her journey continues, Racquel learns more
about herself, what she is capable of, and that not every being looks
at her as an abomination. Coy, a human captive that Racquel saves
from the Vampires, starts showing kindness toward her. Racquel tries
putting distance between her and the human boy but as they spend more
time together it becomes harder and harder for Racquel to fight the
affection she wants and needs. But will Coy’s friendship and her new
found discoveries be enough to help Racquel unravel the strangest
mystery that has ever plagued the Shadow World?
Blood
Burdens
The
Shadow World Trilogy Volume 2
As
someone with four Shadow bloodlines, Racquel is uniquely unwelcome
even among her fellow werewolves, shape-shifters, vampires, and
witches. Growing up, she was bullied and tormented for being a
“hybrid,” a condition frowned upon by Shadow society. After
saving her sister and a number of other kidnapped Shadows from a
diabolical plot to create a Shadow army, many have found a new
respect for Racquel, but she is far from accepted in Shadow society,
and the evil is far from over. To complicate matters, Racquel now
finds herself torn between two brothers. Coy is caring and has helped
Racquel through her struggles, and Micah, who Racquel has only met
once but who is somehow, having dream conversations with him. Racquel
becomes torn between following her heart while breaking it at the
same time. In the second installment of the Shadow World series,
Racquel and her sister Addie face off with the Shadow leaders against
a threat that could bring the world to its knees. Power will be
pushed to its limit, hearts will be broken, and some will pay the
ultimate price as Racquel and her group of Shadows fight against an
ancient evil that is determined to make the earth bleed and Racquel
with it.
Sacrifice:
A New Dawn
The
Shadow World Trilogy Book 3
Racquel
was once uniquely unwelcome, an outcast in both the human and Shadow
worlds. In desperation, the Shadows—the loose alliance of Vampires,
Werewolves, Witches, Shape Shifters and Faeries—turned to Racquel
for help against the sorceress Cerelia, who threatened all Shadows.
Now that Racquel has protected the Shadows by defeating Cerelia, it
seems like things are picking up. Racquel is ready to challenge the
Shadows’ Ruling Council on the injustice of the laws that made her
and her family outcasts among the Shadows, and which is causing
suffering among her friends. Racquel has little time to enjoy her
victory. Micah, an innocent subjected to experiments by Cerelia and
now the only other person in the world like Racquel, is summoned to
appear before the Ruling Council to be examined. The Council has
already warned that if Micah is deemed to be “unclean” and a
threat to the Shadows, he will be executed. And there are agendas
hidden in agendas, as well. A secret faction wants to challenge
Racquel, who they still see as being an unclean creature due to her
mixed-Shadow heritage. Worse still, the mysterious prophecy made by
Kaya, queen of the Fay, is about to become true, and Racquel is about
to be faced with her deepest fear: that she is still unwelcome in the
world. Betrayed trust and a new danger to the Shadow world are
waiting for Racquel, and in the end, she may have to make the
ultimate sacrifice in order to save the world and her friends from
destruction.

Scientists attempted to find a cure for addiction. They failed

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017
Tainted
Cure
The
Rememdium Series Book 1
by
Ashley Fontainne
Genre:
Post-apocalyptic, SciFi

Scientists
attempted to find a cure for addiction. They failed.

Dr.
Everett Berning, a leading researcher into the causes of addiction in
the brain, spent ten years of his life dedicated to one thing:
finding the cure. Recruited after a strange encounter with the
enigmatic Dr. Roberta Flint, Director of Research on Code Name:
Rememdium, Dr. Berning is sent to work in a secret lab as part of the
research team.

When
the moment the scientists waited on for years arrives, Dr. Flint and
her team are ecstatic.

Unfortunately,
not everyone in the world feels the same way.

Benito
San Nicholas isn’t ready to give up his lucrative business. When the
news of a cure arrives on his doorstep from a crooked informant,
Benito enlists the help of other drug lords from around the world to
stop the cure from hitting the streets and destroying their
livelihoods.

What
happens next ends up uniting the globe–just not the way society ever
intended or hoped.

“Tainted
Cure is a huge success on different levels. First, the story is
original, well thought-out, and brilliantly accomplished. It’s not
unusual to read books with dangerous products falling into the wrong
hands, but what happens when a good product falls into the wrong
hands? The characters are lovely and engaging, and readers will feel
inclined to connect with Dr. Everett Berning and the enigmatic
Roberta Flint. Benito is the epitome of evil, a greedy character that
readers will hate. Third, the pace is fast and there are so many
surprises and twists to keep readers turning the pages. Ashley
Fontainne has crafted an intriguing story that starts with a bang and
ends on a very high note. You can’t help but fall for this author’s
beautiful prose, her complex characters, and the oh-so-entertaining
read.” – Romuald Dzemo for Readers’ Favorite

Mr. Withers sat across from them, a
stack of papers spread out for easy access. He first read all the parts of the
will that pertained to Grant, and then he read the parts that pertained to
Sybil. He then took an envelope, passed it across the table to Sybil, and
advised her to visit the bank after leaving his office.
“You deducted the money spent on me
in America, I’m sure?” Sybil asked as she tucked the envelope into her
reticule.
“Actually, I’d like you to consider
your time in America as a gift from me,” Grant said. He felt terrible about
everything that had happened, and if he could ease his conscience in any way,
he would do it.
She turned to him with eyes of fire.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Please, it’s a gift. You deserve the
full sum of your inheritance.”
She sat up a little straighter. “Do
you mean to tell me that I’m to consider the clothing and the stay in the
Palace Hotel a gift? Lord Douglas, that might be one of the most offensive
things anyone has ever said to me. No respectable woman, whether high bred or
low, would accept such personal things from a man. It’s insulting and
demeaning.” She pulled the envelope back out and tossed it at him. “I
respectfully request that you remove the appropriate amount of money from that
envelope, sir.”
Grant was thoroughly taken aback.
“Honestly, Sybil, I had no idea—”
“Miss James will suit, Lord Douglas.”
Her voice was so cold and her eyes were so hard, he had no reasonable choice
but to open the envelope and withdraw some of the money. He couldn’t remember
all the sums, so he made a guess and passed the envelope back to her. “Thank
you. Now I believe I’ll be on my way.”
