Shannon, what do you write and why? I write children’s books because they are light and fun and we all need a little light and whimsy in our lives. More seriously, though, I write children’s books because I’m writing for my own child. I want to be an example for her, of what it takes and what it looks like, to follow your dream and to act even when your afraid.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a homeschooling mama, with a background in both Early Childhood Development and English Studies. I have three daughters, but only one is still reading children’s books. I grew up in California, but I have been living in Texas since getting married in my early 20’s.
I started this journey as an author a few years ago. You see, I lost an argument with God over using the gifts he gave me. I may have lost an argument, but a won a better life and a better legacy.
I had been living in fear, and didn’t even realize it. But God opened my eyes and showed me what my fear was doing to my kids. I wanted to be the best example to my kids that I could be. That meant living past my fear, and using all of the gifts I was given. In the process I get to help other people be the best they can be.
3.5 yrs and 10 books later, I think I’m making progress in being the example I want to be.
Good for you, Shannon. How many books have you written?
I have 10 books, and 2 activity guides published so far.
Tell us about your new book “Take a Walk on the Beach”.
This was an exercise for me, in painting a person, and writing simple sentences. Many people think that writing for kids is easy, but keeping the vocabulary simple, easy to read, and still telling a story, is a challenge. The little girl in the story, takes a walk and looks for treasures on the beach. She enjoys her day and reminds us to leave nature as we find it.
I love that cover. What kind of characters are in this book?
This book features a little girl, I chose not to name her, or show her face. The purpose of this book is to encourage kids learning to read. This is why I made this book available in two different fonts. One is a dyslexic font, while this font is not scientifically proven, I want to provide the option. Reading is a door to so many things, my goal is to help by providing well written stories in readable fonts.
What an interesting idea. Who should read “Take a Walk at the Beach”? Its a beginning reader, so any parent or teacher that has children in their life. Take a read through it yourself and then share the sweet book with the kids in your life.
Do you have plans for another book? Yes! I have so many plans, it feels kind of crazy. Two of my next ten planned books are in this series.
That is great news. Where can we find you?
Where can we find your books?

Thank so much for visiting us this week, Shannon. Have an awesome time writing your next book.
