Love
is a little girl who faces a number of challenges between her school
and her home. We all can relate to the pressures of not being
accepted by our peers, sibling rivalry, lost relationships and the
struggle to find love through it all. While directly pin pointing
these important issues, Baby Love serves as an open call for
awareness that can hopefully bring us one step closer to making a
positive change in the lives of all children.
This
book is a must read for young adults ranging from age 13 years
and older. Baby Love tells a story of issues that arise for young
children that include bullying, issues with family, and it also
teaches lessons on self love, acceptance, and kindness to one others.

Latiera
Ford is a career HR Professional turned Author and Entrepreneur. Born
and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago, IL., she has always taken
pride in hard work and dedication.
Through
news outlets, social media, family, and friends she noticed a lack of
sensitivity that children have today. This has led to an increase in
bullying, lack of positive self-image and acceptance, as well as
family issues. Upon discovering this powerful message that needed to
be addressed she decided to self-publish her first book entitled Baby
Love. This book provides children from ages 13 and up with a straight
forward approach to some of today’s most pressing issues. While
tackling the aforementioned issues plaguing some of our youth, it
also provides a direct approach on how they can be handled, while
also teaching lessons of love and kindness. Unlike the normal cookie
cutter children’s stories, this book is also honest to the core
with some of the real issues that exist within families across
America.
Baby
Love has proven to be a strong book for this Chicago Native, and is
destined to continue making waves throughout the literary scene.
While promoting this project, Latiera is currently in Atlanta looking
to further expand her brand through speaking engagements, press,
school, vendor events and more!

They are plunged into a whirlpool of hazardous and mysterious events when Dr. Khalid kidnaps them

Saturday, July 21st, 2018

I am a children’s author, but up until a few years ago, I was a journalist and editor. Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. We had a great time and I thought I’d write them a short story as a different kind of souvenir…. Well, one book and a planned book series later, I had changed careers. I have now published Book 3 (The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper) in my MG adventure series Chronicles of the Stone, with many awards for the first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, and a few for Book 2, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, and one already for Book 3! I also teach online novel writing for aspiring authors and I find that very satisfying. Relaxation time finds me enjoying something creative or artistic, music, books, theatre or ballet. I love doing research for my book series. I love animals and have written two animal rescue stories. I have two adorable (naughty) little dogs called Chloe and Pumpkin, and a beautiful black cat called Bertie.

In this exciting Middle Grade adventure set in Egypt, a 5000-year-old mystery comes to life. A scruffy peddler gives Adam and Justin Sinclair an old Egyptian scarab on their very first day in Egypt. Only when the evil Dr. Faisal Khalid shows a particular interest in the cousins and their scarab, do the boys realise they are in terrible danger. Dr. Khalid wants the relic at all costs. Justin and Adam embark upon the adventure of a lifetime, taking them down the Nile and across the harsh desert in their search for the legendary tomb of the Scarab King, an ancient Egyptian ruler. They are plunged into a whirlpool of hazardous and mysterious events when Dr. Khalid kidnaps them. They learn more about the ancient Seven Stones of Power and the mysterious Shemsu-Hor. They must translate the hieroglyphic clues on the underside of the scarab, as well as rescue the missing archaeologist James Kinnaird, and their friend, the Egyptologist Ebrahim Faza, before time runs out!
Snippet:
1.     The Giant Cobra
The snake jerked
at the sound of his voice. It glided closer to the stone sarcophagus. Adam lay
back on the pile of smelly bones and closed his eyes to half-slits. He looked
up at the ceiling where the painted cobra shimmered.
I can’t believe
this is happening. I know it’s after me.
The slithering,
scraping sound grew louder. Then directly in front of him, just at the edge of
the stone sarcophagus, the forked tongue whipping back and forth came into view
followed by the loathsome head, which reared up, its hood spread wide. Then the
snake opened its monstrous jaws, revealing wicked fangs. A clear drop of deadly
poison, glistening like a pearl, trembled on the end of each fang. The reptile
made a hideous hissing as it stared into the stone coffin, hunting for its
prey, waiting for the tiniest movement that would betray his presence. Adam
closed his eyes so he wouldn’t have to look into the snake’s gleaming black orbs.
I’m finished, he thought,
sliding his hand into his pocket and feeling the scarab. Somehow, just holding
it made him feel calmer.
Then Justin
called softly, “I know how I can distract it.

Life

by
Anthony Wilson
Genre:
YA, Coming of Age

Jahlil
Adams is just a regular teenager. In fact, you could say that he is
“super regular” with his glasses, comic books, and cheap fashion
sense. He doesn’t want popularity. He doesn’t want a pretty
girlfriend. He wants to just be who he is. Well that and not to be
bullied by Max Maniac.

Yet,
everything changes once Mr. Malachi gave Jahlil a necklace that he
didn’t even want.

After
that, everything was not the same. In fact, Jahlil began to realize
that there was much more to who he was. There was much more to who
Mr. Malachi was. There was much more to his existence. The lid of
limitations was lifted from Jahlil’s life.

Now,
all that mattered was the limitations that the sky had to offer.

No. Can’t think of them now. They’re gone, and I can’t change it

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

William C. Tracy is a North Carolina native and a lifelong fan of science fiction and fantasy. He has a master’s in mechanical engineering, and has both designed and operated heavy construction machinery. He has also trained in Wado-Ryu karate since 2003, and runs his own dojo. He is an avid video and board gamer, a reader, and of course, a writer.

In his spare time, he wrangles three cats. He and his wife enjoy putting their pets in cute little costumes and making them cosplay for the annual Christmas card.
You can visit him at williamctracy.com.

On a bright August day, the sun disappears.

Sam van Oen barely escapes freezing to death in his house, as his watch stops and fire ceases to burn. He is pulled into the Nether—a nexus between ten diverse alien cultures—where he meets two maji who can control the musical foundation of the universe. While coping with anxiety attacks prompted by his new surroundings, Sam must learn to hear and change the Symphony, and thus reality, in order to discover what happened to his home.Sam is surrounded by aliens, both strange and familiar. Soon, he meets sister and brother twins, also new to the Nether, who support him during his anxiety attacks. Sam finds he is attracted to both of them, and does not want to choose.

But more freezing voids like the one that started his journey are appearing, and Sam’s chances of getting back are fading. The Assembly of Species is threatening to dissolve and the maji are being attacked by those they protect, while rumors grow of an ancient, shape-changing species of assassins, returning to wage war.

The Dissolution is coming.

Snippet:
Sam was reading when the sun dimmed.
As he looked up from his book, he caught the sky outside his window shading into twilight. Overhead, the light blinked off, then on and the music playing on his laptop—Beethoven’s 7th—croaked a discordant jumble of notes before the screen went black. A breath of cold air left goosebumps on his arms.
“What the—” Sam pushed up from the chair as the overhead light faded again. His breath caught in his throat, like he had swallowed a lump of ice. His room was not large, made smaller by the piles of boxes making up his collection, and now shadows rose between stacks of waist-high containers. He wormed through them in the dim light, heart racing. Was this really happening, or was he having an attack? Why now? It took two tries to pick up his grandfather’s pocket watch from where it rested on an end table beside his bed. His hands shook, and the thump of his heartbeat nearly overpowered the rhythmic ticking transmitted through his palm. He focused on the mechanical beat—let it inform his body with the regular beat of time.
Calm down. Stillness evaded him, left him unsteady. Everything is going dark in the middle of the day. At least the watch was working. He made sure to keep it wound, and kept it safe in his room.
While watching the darkened sky, his other hand fingered the lid of a small shoebox. His collection of boxes contained grass clippings, shells, sand, and other things, bought by friends and customers of his aunt. They reminded him of favorite sights and smells. However, the shoebox contained things more precious than the rest: half a belt, stiff from water damage, and the heel of a woman’s left shoe, sheared off cleanly.
No. Can’t think of them now. They’re gone, and I can’t change it. He shivered at another gust of cold air. His room felt like late January instead of August. He eyed the window, but the thought of opening it—letting in the places he didn’t know—made his hands sweat. His hand left the box, moving to the windowpane. He hissed and shook his fingers. The window was colder than the house, which meant outside must be too. He breathed out and raised his watch to his ear, listening to the steady beat.
Is this all in my head? He hadn’t heard a transformer blow, and there was no storm. It was so quiet his rough breathing was like a train. He rubbed his arms, and a quick touch on his laptop’s case nearly numbed his finger. His cellphone was powered down and wouldn’t restart.
Aunt Martha will know what to do. Get to safety. Sam weaved through the precise stacks of boxes, trembling. She would be in her sewing shop. Sam wiped sweaty hands on his shorts before pulling a coat from the closet and socks from a drawer. He dropped his watch in a pocket of the coat, but kept one hand on it. If the power outage kept up, he couldn’t log in for his shift in technical support. What will they think? Will they fire me? He couldn’t get his ethics essay done either, and he had to email it in by tomorrow night for the ethical theories class at his online community college.
The chill air in the hall made him regret the shorts, but he shrugged his coat on, then leaned against the wall, pulling his socks on carefully. If the seams were going the wrong way, they’d just distract him, and there was too much going on already. He closed his eyes. Don’t shut down. Keep moving.
The dark wood-paneled hallway was cold even through his socks, and Sam made a detour to the front door to get his sneakers, adjusting his feet in them, making sure the laces were the same length. It took two tries with his shaking hands. The dark was deepening outside, and by the time he got to the other end of the house, he was using his sense of touch more than sight to navigate.
He met Aunt Martha coming from the small one-room addition that served as her workshop. She held a flickering beeswax candle in her hand. It’s not just in my head.

I
was born in Colorado Springs, CO as an Army Brat. I have lived all
across this country but unfortunately I don’t remember most of it
(hate that). What I do remember is growing up in Detroit and Highland
Park, Michigan, playing in my grandmother’s basement that was filled
with books my family bought for me and my sister, pretending to be a
singer, a news anchorwoman, and a writer. Of these, reading and
writing stuck.

When
I was still very young I moved to Arkansas with my father and sister
and have thus lived here for most of my life. I graduated from
Jacksonville High in Jacksonville, AR. I got my BBA from Philander
Smith College and my MSM from Kaplan Online University. And I have
spent the last 10 years working for the State of Arkansas. Yet all I
really wanted to do was have reasons to read and write. But not only
did I want to write, I wanted to share my writing with the world.

I
have not been more proud of a completed goal as I am of being able to
share #MeBeingMe with you. This story is inspired by my oldest son
(and my own) experiences with challenges, change, and middle school
(sometimes it really does suck).

I
still live in Arkansas with my three sons and our dog, Barker. I am
still finding every available minute to read, write, and share it

It’s hard enough to deal with losing Sydney, but now she may lose her best friend, too

Sunday, April 15th, 2018
Seven
Days to Goodbye
A
Trina Ryan Novel #1
by
Sheri Levy
Genre:
YA Coming of Age Fiction

After
Trina’s beloved dog dies, she swears she’ll never get another
one. But then she learns about service dogs, and realizes that if she
becomes a puppy raiser, she could train puppy after puppy and never
worry about them dying. But like all great ideas, this one has a
serious flaw: her first service puppy must be returned to his kennel
at the end of their week-long summer vacation. And saying goodbye to
Sydney is going to be much tougher than she ever imagined.

Trina’s
last week with Sydney is made that much harder by her newly strained
friendship with her best friend, Sarah, who’s become so
over-the-top boy crazy that she’s almost like a stranger. Sarah is
determined to have them hang out with every boy at the beach, but
when a boy named Chase takes an interest in Sydney and Trina, it puts
an even bigger strain on the friendship.

It’s
hard enough to deal with losing Sydney, but now she may lose her best
friend, too. And even if she manages to patch things up with
Sarah—and figures out what to do about Chase—she still must face
a daunting decision: is she strong enough to take on another service
puppy?

Author
Sheri S. Levy deftly taps adolescent themes of love, loss and
friendship through the added lens of a service dog’s life-changing
effects on her young trainer. A fresh twist on the familiar
coming-of-age tale. Well done!” — Jennifer Leeper, author, Padre:
The Narrowing Path

Trina’s
foray into the world of boys, friendship, and fashion while focusing
on the important task of training service dogs strikes just the right
balance. This canine-inspired coming-of-age tale is a poignant but
fun summertime story.” — Val Muller, author, the Corgi Capers
series and The Scarred Letter

A
Trina Ryan Novel #2

Trina
Ryan’s challenging summer starts off with a puppy-fueled energy
burst as she takes on another service dog for training—an
eight-week-old black Labrador named Colton. And to help explore
another dream, she’s taken a job at the barn next door in exchange
for riding lessons with the barn’s schooling horse. Before long,
Trina butts heads with Morgan Hart, an ill-tempered but skilled rider
with a gorgeous thoroughbred named Knight.
Adding
to the list of frustrations is the difficulty in maintaining a
long-distance relationship with Chase, her first boyfriend from last
summer, while trying to deal with unwanted attention from a new boy
in her puppy training class. At least best friend Sarah still has her
back, but as Trina wearies of Morgan’s constant insults and her
heartless treatment of Knight, she decides to use her dog training
skills to look underneath Morgan’s hostile attitude and develop a
sense of trust.
Slowly,
Morgan’s angry shield cracks enough to where she’s able to share
a troubling family secret. Can Trina help Morgan confront her family
problems and make a fresh start?

Levy
is on sure ground in this enjoyable page-turner for young adults.
Readers see the world through the eyes of Trina Ryan, a freckle-faced
redhead with a big heart for horses, service dogs, and people in
need. Trina learns some of life’s most important lessons: that
people are not always what they seem, growing up involves tough
choices, and a first crush can be more exciting than she ever
dreamed. Poignant, fun, and adventuresome.” — Peggy Jo Shaw,
award-winning journalist, PR specialist, and book
author/editor

Starting
Over is a book you’ll want to give your daughter. A story about
best friends, boyfriends, enemies, and how to handle them all. Throw
in horses and puppies, and you have the perfect mix for an
entertaining, self-evolving read.” — C. Hope Clark, author,
Carolina Slade Mysteries and Edisto Island Mysteries

How
do you help a friend and stay true to yourself? Trina Ryan’s
struggles to cope and regroup should ring true for teens. Most people
probably never dream so much is involved. Teens who love to read
about animals should truly enjoy Starting Over.” — Lisa Williams
Kline, author, Eleanor Hill, Princesses of Atlantis, Write Before
Your Eyes, and the Sisters in All Seasons series

There’s
a lot going on in Trina’s life, but Levy weaves each thread
seamlessly. I especially enjoyed the detail about how to train a
service dog, as well as her experience in the barn mucking out
stalls, caring for the horses, and learning to ride. A must-read YA
novel for anyone who loves dogs and horses.” — Judy Sheluk,
author, The Hanged Man’s Noose and Skeletons in the Attic

Dogs!
Horses! Boys! What could be better? An energetic puppy learning to be
a service dog, a sweet-tempered horse, an absentee boyfriend, and
Trina, the girl who has to make some difficult decisions about all of
them. A lovely, thoughtful coming-of-age novel.” — Ellyn Bache,
author, Kaleidoscope, The Art of Saying Goodbye, and Safe Passage

Sheri,
a California gal, moved to Greenville, SC, & taught special
education. Her goal was to instill the love of books. When Sheri
retired, her students had created a desire for her to write. She
joined SCBWI, & Dog Writers Association. After years of enjoying
Edisto Beach with her Aussie and Black Lab, it became the setting for
her first YA novel, Seven Days to Goodbye.

Seven
Days to Goodbye involves a service dog connecting with a child with
autism, girls learning about the importance of friendships and trying
to keep theirs intact while flirting with guys for the first time. A
loggerhead turtle helps bring the girls together. The story has humor
and plenty of puppy love in both varieties. The second book in the

First, let’s take a look inside the book
with this Excerpt

Young Cenaya’s eyes flew open. A bulky swamp creature stood over her bed. Thick leather armor covered its frog-like body. Her scream stuck in her throat. Moonlight beaming through Cenaya’s open window shined off the grob’s bulging, bloodshot eyes.
Run! Cenaya’s mind screeched. Her five-year-old body didn’t move.

The grob’s forked tongue flicked through crooked, decaying teeth. Drool dripped past its thin, green lips onto Cenaya’s nose and rolled down her cheek. The putrid smell made her stomach churn. Grabbing her by the neck, the grob lifted her away from her silky bed sheets.

Cenaya pulled at its slimy fingers. She couldn’t breathe. Soft footsteps entered her room.

With a shriek, the creature released its grip. Cenaya fell to the ground and rolled away. The grob toppled over.

Cenaya felt a rush of relief. She recognized the arrow sticking out from the back of the grob’s armor.

In Willow Woods Academy for Witches, by R.L. Weeks and Skylar Mckinzie, you will find a fun story that reads a bit like Harry Potter. The named school is a high school for witches and wizards. They have had past wars, past friendships and friendship fallouts. When Katherine Ash runs away and enrolls in the school against her parents’ wishes, she finds a lot more than magic in her academic year. Secrets, friendship and the puppy love are all found in this tale and they will enchant you to the last page.

Willow Woods Academy for Witches, by R.L. Weeks and Skylar Mckinzie is a great adventure, mystery and coming of age tale for all readers of magic and even mysteries, all in one. It’s well done, the characters are excellent and the tale is made superb by the way it is told.

I quite enjoyed Willow Woods Academy for Witches, and I believe you will too.

The West Texas night wind whispered and whistled around the window
frames. I was in my mom’s favorite chair reading The Tell-Tale Heart when I heard the stuttering drone of a small
plane. In our rural setting, it sounded very low and very loud.
Then the noise stopped.

Lady, the German shepherd I’d found lying mangled and near death
beside the road, was standing in front of the picture-window, head cocked to
one side.
The silence was thick and cold.

As we watched, the tail of a small plane disappeared behind the
line of firs west of the house. There was still no sound but the wind.

I dialed the operator and told her what I’d seen. She immediately
patched me through to the Sheriff’s office so I could tell the dispatcher what
had happened. Then I ran outside to see what I could see. Lady was right behind
me.

They thought the episode with their cousin to the east, Lady Bloodstein, was over. They thought it was something to laugh about at the grand table in fond nostalgia.

But they were wrong. They were so wrong.
And Castle Blanchefort has fallen!

Lord Kabyl has lost everything: his wife, his kin, his family fortune, and his home. Castle Blanchefort, once a safe haven, is overrun with enemies seeking his blood.

In what follows, he must join forces with ancient enemies and with people who do not exist. He must treat with sinister, possibly untrustworthy gods and barter away his soul for urgently needed arcane help or face certain death at the hands of forgotten tyrants and their machinations from a bygone age.

And, how can a strange science known as Mentralysis, practiced in secret in the hidden places of the League, hold the key to ultimate victory?

What should have been obvious to Lord Kabyl from the start at last becomes crystal clear: Foolish is he who dares possess the Ultimate Object, for misery shall be his only reward.

A new start they will willingly kill and die for

Monday, August 14th, 2017
Rebel
Queen
Dragonkin
Chronicles Book 1
by
David Temrick
Genre:
Fantasy

Cassandra
has a problem, and it’s only the first of many. Being raised as the
youngest child in a family of great heroes would be a challenge for
anyone.

Until
a few days ago, Cassandra was content with her role as a child of
greatness. She was studious, spent most of her waking hours with her
mother and other heads of state and at her father’s insistence,
learned how to duel. As her siblings had before her, Cassandra knew
she would likely be matched with a partner for political reasons and
had long since accepted her role in the world.

That
was, of course, before her mother died, and before
her…transformation. Overnight, her soft pale skin sprouted gorgeous
golden dragon scales.

Presented
with a future she no longer recognizes, as the first of her kind, she
must overcome a whole new set of challenges if she hopes to survive
the unknown threat that comes from across the Careless Sea.

The
Sakwa dragonkin are a dying race, fueled by a tribal system that
failed them centuries ago but yet unable to adapt to a new way of
life. In a desperate bid to keep the people focused on outside
conflict, Jenya of the Toho has declared war on Cassandra’s country.
An ocean may separate the two cultures, but the Sakwa see the Seven
Kingdoms as their opportunity for a new start; a new start they will
willingly kill and die for.

David
has been writing for most of his life, though only began putting
together full-length novels in 2008. His first two novels were
distinctly fantasy, containing the usual fare of dragons, princes,
swords and sorcery.

With
“Daughter of Vengeance”, he took leave of the more common
tropes in fantasy and instead wrote a book predominantly from a
female point of view. The story follows a young woman coming of age
while apprenticed to a master assassin.

His
strengths lie in compelling stories with a satisfying mix of action,
dialogue and plot building. He doesn’t believe in waxing
philosophical to fill pages or fluff his word count, there will be
not be entire paragraphs dedicated to the painfully long-winded
description of a button. He also uses his extensive martial arts and
marksmanship experience to create believable and easy to follow
action.

Most
genre fiction uses the genre to drive the plot, David believes that
the genre should merely be used to supplement a great story. A
mystery is just a mystery, but a Holmes mystery is infinitely more
entertaining in his opinion. There are still inalienable requirements
to any genre fiction and as a fan of the fantasy genre, he still
loves to read and write within fantastical surroundings.

What do you get when wizards banish a powerful demon?…3 teens from Seattle

Thursday, July 27th, 2017

What makes you passionate about writing?

I love good story-telling. Whether it’s a movie, a novel or a comic book, I love taking in any great story. Since I was young I’ve always enjoyed sci-fi and fantasy stories in particular. Something about them has just always captured my imagination. Through my life I’ve searched for good sci-fi and fantasy to take in, and I just simply haven’t found enough of it. Since there wasn’t enough out there for my taste, I decided that I needed to make my own. I write the kind of stories that aren’t really out there right now, and that I really want to read. So I’m passionate about my writing because I’m creating the things I want to find out in the world.

It sounds fascinating. Do you have a writing routine?

I try to keep up a routine of writing a few hours per day. It can be a bit difficult, since I work full-time and have a family, but my writing flows better and faster if I can find a little time to do it every day, so I do my best to make sure it happens. As far as what I do when I’m writing, I don’t really have a specific routine, I just sit down and start writing.

A panter…so am I. What is the title of your book?

My latest book is the first in The Cross-Road Travelers series. It’s called The Key to the Demon’s Gate.

What genre does your book fall under?

This book is considered to be a YA fantasy, and it certainly fits in with that genre, but I’ve kept it clean and appropriate enough that I’ve found it to be quite popular with elementary school children and their parents as well as teens.

I love YA. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

When a group of wizards from another world attempt to banish a powerful demon, they actually trade its place with 3 teens from Seattle.

Don’t say…really? How long did it take you to write the first draft of The Key to the Demon’s Gate?

It took me about 6 months to write the first draft of this book. Re-writes and editing took me another 6 months on top of that.

Edits and more edits… we could write another book if we didn’t have to edit. What other books would you compare this story to, within your genre?

One of my biggest inspirations for this story was The Chronicles of Narnia. I love the concept of kids from Earth traveling to new worlds. There are a lot of magical aspects to this story that are similar to Harry Potter as well, but I think most readers will be pleased to find aspects of these stories that they’ve never found anywhere else before.

Narnia and Harry Potter you said? I’m in…Who or What inspired you to write this book?

As I mentioned before, I always loved the concept of kids being transported to another world, so I wanted to write a story about that. Aside from liking that concept a lot, I don’t know that there’s really one specific source of inspiration for the story, it just comes from everything that I take in and think about every day.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

This story truly has something for everyone with a strong imagination. It’s full of magic, fighting, bandits, pirates, heists, and so many other things. A lot of stories include too many things, and get overwhelming, but my focus in writing is on strong relatable characters, because having characters like that gives me the chance to include so many things and still keep the story interesting without being too much. A quick read through the reviews being left for this book will show you that my readers agree. This book is full of powerful imagination balanced out by fun, and interesting characters, making it a great read for people of all ages.

Where can we find your book?

This book is available in print, as an ebook, or as an audiobook on Amazon at this link: myBook.to/CRT-1

Seventeen-year-old Emma Harris is drowning on dry land.

No one knows what’s happening to her, and she’d like to keep her evolution from
human to mermaid a secret, but the truth is getting harder and harder to hide.
From her adoptive family, from her friends, and especially from the irresistible James Phelps.

Her time in the ocean is spent dodging a possessive merman, while her time on land is split between caring for her special-needs brother and squeezing in every last possible moment of human life. She soon realizes falling for James is unavoidable when he constantly comes to Emma’s rescue and somehow manages to see through her carefully constructed icy facade to the vulnerability she lives
with every day. Everything about James makes Emma yearn for a life on land she just can’t have.

When Emma’s brother disappears on her watch, James is the only person she
trusts to help her save him. But even if they can save her brother, nothing can
prevent her return to the sea. Whether she likes it or not, Emma is
changing—unable to breathe without yielding to the tide—and it’s only a matter
of time before she’s forced to surrender forever.

Lieutenant
Peters made another note, then pocketed his notebook and stood, frowning. “What
are you planning to do about this broken window? It’s unlikely you’ll get a
glass company out here to replace it until morning. Is there somewhere you and
Keith can go for the night?”
“Keith’s
staying at the neighbor’s.” Emma took in the glass all over the floor, the cool
breeze blowing in, and had to swallow a lump in her throat. “I don’t know what
to do about the window.”
“I’ll
help her take care of it.” James reached across the arms of their chairs and
took her hand, palm-to-palm, an offer of solid support—friendship. “Do you know
if your dad has any plywood lying around?”
“Probably.”
Her head spun as the initial adrenaline rush wore off, but she squeezed James’s
hand, grateful. “Thanks.”
He
shook his head. “Don’t worry about it.”
Peters
leveled his gaze on James. “You planning to stick around for a while?”
James
hesitated, his eyes searching hers for approval. “As long as Emma needs. I’ll
help her clean up, make sure she’s not alone if the vandal comes back.”
Something
stirred, fluttered, in Emma’s chest, soft, like the tentacles of a jellyfish in
motion. She tried to push the feeling away, but James held tight, and the warm
sensation traveled up her arm and spread through the rest of her body.
Tread
carefully, Emma. Go slow. Don’t dive in just because it feels good to be
touched, to have someone worry about you.
James
moved her in foreign ways, from places no one else had managed to reach. By all
accounts, he should be forbidden territory. She couldn’t ask him to stay, but
tonight, she didn’t relish the idea of being alone, either.
Another
officer poked his head in the door. “Lieutenant, we’re clear out here.”
“Thanks,
Brown.” Peters handed Emma a business card. “Here’s my number. I’m on duty
until two a.m., but you can call anytime.”

“Thanks.”
She ran her fingers over the card as Peters strode from the house, closing the
door behind him. Outside, the cops got in their cars, turned off the flashing
lights, and one by one, drove away.

Born and raised in Hampshire, I spent most of my childhood dreaming up random adventures.

I left the sunny south coast to study Graphic Communication in Bath, where I fell in love with the rolling Somerset hills when I wasn’t walking up them.
Returning to Hampshire 6 years later, after meeting my now wife, Claire, I enjoy a quieter life, walking in the New Forest and relaxing with my wonderful wife and fluffy cat Molly.
I have always enjoyed telling stories, more often than not in visual form, either in films or animations. However, the idea of Escher was too big for me to do visually by myself so I picked up a pen and started writing.
Having written one novel, I am now keen to tell more stories of Escher, while at the same time expressing my imagination with my art.

My Review:

The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance is a great story for middle grade kids. However, it does start out rather depressing as James, the main character, goes through some rough times at home and school. As the characters get introduced and the story moves along, things go from bad to worse and keep you glued to the pages. You will find a great array of stone brutes, goblins, and animal creatures mingled with the humans between its pages.

The story starts on the last day of school when James has to endure bullying once again. The next day, he is going on vacation with his family of five; his parents, his younger brother and baby sister. The trip is quite long and they have to traverse two or three countries before they get there. His father has a short fuse and he, being the oldest, gets pinned with many things. He is having a terrible time until…he wakes up in a weird land with animal creatures that act like humans where everyone thinks that he is special and will help them free their land from darkness. But he is a nobody, how can they expect him to save them?

The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance, is a well-done tale with all kinds of fascinating stories, all with James in pursuit of his family and later trying to save Escher. I enjoyed the tale and the telling, and I believe many elementary kids and pre-teens will make The Heart of Escher by Jonathan Dance, their favorite. Great job.

The Origins of Benjamin Hackett and the family secret

Saturday, March 18th, 2017
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett
by
Gerald M. O’Connor
Genre:
Coming Of Age

All
families have secrets. Most go untold…

In the summer of
‘96, Benjamin Hackett has come of age, technically. And in the
midst of the celebratory hangover, his world is whipped out from
under his feet. His parents have finally shared their lifelong secret
with him; he’s adopted.
At the age of 18, the boy still has
some growing up to do, and with the help of JJ, his loquacious
consigliore and bodyguard, he embarks on an adventure that’ll put
to bed a lifetime of lies.
Over the course of five days, they
find themselves caught up in the darker side of Cork. But when they
sweep through the misfits blocking their way and finally discover the
truth of it…now that’s the greatest shock of all.

The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

is a tender tale of heartache and displacement told through a wry and
courageous voice. Set in Ireland, it’s a timely reminder that the
world hasn’t moved on just as fast as we fancy. Now, in this
emotionally charged story, Gerald M. O’Connor explores conditioned
guilt and its consequences in a country still hiding from the sins of
its past.

O’Connor’s
book draws on a time when the Catholic Church in Ireland would
quietly take children from mothers in convents and Magdalene
Laundries and deposit them into new homes, making it nearly
impossible for these kids to find their real parents. Attempts by
children to find their birth parents were often blocked by a dark web
of secrecy and bureaucracy that, in many ways, still continues to
haunt the country today.
Brimming
with unfathomable escapades, a motley crew of characters and a
healthy serving of Irish humor, O’Connor’s book is steeped in
Irish culture told in the inimitable Corkman’s brogue. Set in a
time before the chaos of modern digital culture,
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

takes a step back, allowing space for readers to escape and think
about the realities of growing up in a family founded on a lie. In
his stylish debut, O’Connor shows an amazing ability to paint
heartbreak and longing that will keep readers thinking about
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett

long after they finish the story.

Praise For
The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett
“‘The
Origins of Benjamin Hackett’ by Gerald O’Connor is a raucous and
riotous coming-of-age story that is brutal, tender and hilarious.”

Paul
D. Brazill, author of A Case of Noir and Guns of Brixton

“O’Connor
doles out killer dialogue that adds oodles of character to this
hero’s journey. Told with the lilt and panache of Joseph O’Connor
and Dermot Bolger in their novels of the ‘90s, Gerald O’Connor is
the new and improved voice we’ve been waiting for.”

Gerard
Brennan, author of Undercover and Wee Rockets

“Visceral
writing that inherits a long Irish tradition. O’Connor’s
narrative contains sharp characterization, and has an assured voice,
while dramatizing conditioned guilt with humor and style.”

Richard Godwin, author of Apostle Rising, Mr. Glamour, One Lost
Summer and others
“If
you’re expecting the usual coming-of-age tale, you’re in for a
big shock. This is a tale big on heart and one which the author,
Gerald O’Connor, has hied religiously to the advice of Harry Crews
for writers, to ‘leave out the parts readers skip.’ None of those
parts remain in these pages. An auspicious debut!”

Les Edgerton, author of The Death of Tarpons, The Bitch, The Genuine,
Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping, Bomb and others
