Can one woman evade an alien empire to save her son’s life?

Friday, July 13th, 2018

Lauren H Salisbury was an English teacher for sixteen years with an MA in Education. She is now a writer who dabbles with tutoring and lives with her husband and a room full of books in Yorkshire, England.

She likes to spend winters abroad, following the sunshine and becoming the seasonal envy of her friends. When she’s not writing, she can be found spending time with family, reading, walking, crafting, or cooking. Courage is her debut novel.

Can one woman evade an alien empire to save her son’s life?
Gilla and Elias have the perfect life—or as perfect as life can be for slaves living deep in the Esarelian Empire. Elias wants freedom for his precious wife and daughter, and the rest of their people, and he is willing to fight to get it. Pregnant with her second child, Gilla only wants a happy, healthy family who share a strong faith in the God of Old Earth and to get through her workload each day.

When the Esarelians decide to teach their rebellious slaves a lesson they will never forget, Gilla’s entire life is turned upside down. She must trust that God has a plan to protect her new-born son, and have the courage to follow it, choosing the strangest of allies in an effort to ensure his survival.

Courage is a science fiction retelling of the Biblical story of Moses’s birth. It has strong, quirky characters, strange alien worlds, and a gripping plot with a twist on the original.

The next book in this Series is available in September! Find out more about that book HERE!

Snippets:
Fear consumed her, tearing her heart from her chest with its force, but she looked at her son and forged on. Breathing heavily through the terror, she kept putting one foot in front of the other for his sake.
(Gilla during the culling)
Years of intense heavy labour and his need to protect his family fuelled his rage and tightened his aim. It would have worked if he’d been fighting humans.
(Elias during the Selection)

This time he was unable to stop his finger from slowly rubbing the thin line that ran across the side of his neck. He would keep the scar until the last human had suffered beyond endurance and been exterminated.

Amy if you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

There are two people that I would love to spend some time with — Aristotle and/or Albert Einstein — oh for a time machine!

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would be? What food would you serve?

I think Kevin (the blue monster on the back cover) would be my dinner companion of choice. I’m certain he would share my love of chocolates.

Kevin

On the other hand, I must warn anyone wanting dinner with a certain single-toothed old lady (bottom right, pg 81), she’s a bit hard of hearing, won’t take no for an answer, and is known for her Hairy Toe stew.

Little Old Lady and a meantforthestewpot Hairy Toe

If you could travel anywhere, on earth or off, where would you go?

Oh, I’d definitely have the Commander (found on the back of the title page) take me to realms and worlds unknown.

Describe your dream writing spot.

Oh, to dream!  My spot is in a warm and bright open-to-the-air Hawaiian seaside room with a resting couch, the walls filled with my library of reference books, stocked with my favorite office supplies, a never-fail computer, and ever full-of-ink printer.

How did you find enough commitment to complete your book?

I wondered myself at times. More than anything, you need to understand why you want to write a book. Deadlines come and go. Complications multiply like rabbits, despair looms menacingly on an almost daily basis, but what keeps you going is that goal, that deep down inside you reason to not just ‘want’ to write, but the ‘need’ to have written.

What is the name of your book?

Dressing the Naked Hand: The World’s Greatest Guide to Making, Staging, and Performing with Puppets

Give us a back blurb of your book

Created by a team of master puppet builders and performers, Dressing the Naked Hand is the go-to manual for all things puppet. With workshops on stuffets, hand puppets, advanced puppets, stages, acting, voices, and much more, it’s the world’s most comprehensive puppetry guide–ever!

What genre is it?

Non-fiction How-to / Crafting

What kind of research did you do for this book?

After years of being a children’s librarian, and years watching Mark’s puppet shows entertain hundreds of kids and adults, I finally convinced him to teach me puppetry. I also joined the Utah Puppetry Arts Guild, attended guild workshops, and dedicated myself to learning from every expert I could find.

Additionally, in the final months of creating images and editing, I realized, for this particular image-heavy and image-specific book, I’d need to teach myself Adobe Photoshop. That was a learning curve!

Any special appearances or events coming up that you want to mention?

Puppetry is a hobby–a beloved, obsessive hobby–for each of us. This curtails our performance and workshop opportunities. We traditionally perform in June at the Orem Library’s Teddy Bear Picnic; on Labor Day weekend at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival; and the 3rd week of December at the SCERA Center for the Arts. Outside of those venues, Dallin and Mark do commission work for Imagine Learning, and Amy lectures on script and text analysis, as well as non-fiction at writing conferences such as Life the Universe and Everything (LTUE.net), World Horror Con 2016 (WHC2016.org), and Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers (WIFYR.com)
