A small figure stepped out of the darkened corner, his frail hand extended. Ragged white hair like that clinging to the corpse sat atop the apparition’s head

Friday, June 19th, 2020

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.

Snippet:
Gavin jumped to his feet and took off running, rounding the corner of the stable. Ahead was another, smaller building, an open door right in front. Not knowing where else to go, he dashed through the opening and into the dark. The foul smell almost did him in. Gagging, trying to hold his breath, his gaze swept the darkness.
“My swords! What could stink so bad?”
Seeing the stench’s source, he clapped a hand over his mouth to keep from throwing up. On the other side, lit only by a slit in the roof, lay the decaying body of a man. Unable to hold back any longer, he threw up. Still spitting and gagging, he looked again through watering eyes at the man. Wisps of white hair stuck out of the skull. It was impossible to tell who he had been. Some flesh remained, but only enough to discern that the figure was indeed a man.
Shouts outside brought him out of his stupor. He looked around, but saw no way out other than the door he’d come through.
“What I wouldn’t give to be back home,” he said. “I could die here. No one will believe the thief is a prince of Pembroke!” His stomach still queasy, Gavin searched the darkness for a hiding place. He moved further toward the back of the room and then froze; his heart skipped several beats.
Two lights shone in a dark corner. A quiet voice spoke to him. “Here! Come here! I’ll halp you.”
A small figure stepped out of the darkened corner, his frail hand extended. Ragged white hair like that clinging to the corpse sat atop the apparition’s head. Gavin backed away, but the ghost followed. “Who…what…who are you?” he croaked.

Cresting the Sun
A SciFi/ Fantasy Anthology
with stories by Nicholas P Adams, Brian C Hailes and Rick Bennett
Cresting the Sun is a science fiction and fantasy anthology compiling twelve award-winning short stories (with a taste of crime and horror mixed in). Each included tale has in recent years earned recognition from the esteemed L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest judges, with adventures sure to rattle your bones, launch you beyond the stars, and carry you through space and time.
Prepare yourself, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride!
Roadblock by Brian C Hailes – All Drew really wants is a chance with his high school crush, Lily. But on his way to a party where he plans to give it one last shot, he’s forced to take a detour off Highway 89, where fate has something else waiting in store.
The Hubbard Drive by Rick Bennett – I just can’t resist comedy. This time-dilation romp is my little Einsteinian “thought experiment” and tribute to L Ron Hubbard, a sci-fi giant.
L.E.A.P. by Nicholas P Adams – A cop with the ability to navigate the timestream puts his skills to the test when a series of murders threatens his freedom and the future of those he’d kill to protect.
Sketch Artist by Brian C Hailes – An innocent girl witnesses a murder, and works with a San Francisco Police Department sketch artist who has an uncanny ability to draw portraits based on witnesses’ firsthand accounts with a ninety-five percent facial recognition accuracy rate. However, as they both find themselves caught in the middle of a deadly mob war, can they find the killer or killers before they themselves fall prey to the infamous crime families?
The Devil & Woody Harrelson by Rick Bennett – Ever think about selling your soul to the devil? You may already have done just that if you clicked “accept” on the terms and conditions on an online program license agreement.
Half Z’s by Nicholas P Adams – A human/alien half-breed, desperate for a connection with either world, travels to the Gya’ol enclave for answers when she discovers a rapidly forming growth inside her body.
The Chaser’s Prey by Brian C Hailes – Having been shipped off to alien scout camp, Gareth Stillwater stumbles across the other boys torturing and mutilating a squirrel-like creature called an ehkhoor’n. When he confronts the alpha scout, Morrow Krin, and his accomplices, they bully him into secrecy . . . until he decides to steal Krin’s hoverbike and put the animal out of its misery, placing himself (and everyone else) in harm’s way.
Overture to The Opera of The Blades by Rick Bennett – This literal “rock opera” features a computer genius who speaks only in palindromes and shows the effect she has on an immortal being.
Uncoiling the Loop by Nicholas P Adams – A temporal manipulator struggles against time, the authorities, and a crotchety barkeep, to prevent his father from going on a killing spree before it happens.
The Artist’s Model by Brian C Hailes – An artist’s model with a past veiled in amnesia meets a mysterious visitor who claims to know who and what she really is. But when her most beloved master artist and patron unexpectedly dies, she must find a way to live up to her otherworldly destiny, and fulfill her new role.
Elvis, Baby Jesus, and One UFO by Rick Bennett – Most first-contact stories involve a superior alien race ravaging the Earth. Here’s my take on the opposite scenario: A superior alien race gets crippled by a clever Earthman-generated computer virus.
Gone are the Light-Wielders by Nicholas P Adams – A shepherd boy holds the fate of the colony in his hands when he must choose between keeping a promise to his mother and his responsibility to the community.

The Wheels of Cady Grey
Cady Grey Mysteries Book 1
by Paul L. Arvidson
Genre: Thriller
Publication Date: August 21, 2019
Get in the way of ruthless people and it’s gonna get you killed.
“Forget all you know about disabled people. This novel will blow everything you knew out of the window. A story of strength, intelligence, love and disability”.
Cady Grey is invisible. One of the ‘perks’ of being in a wheelchair. Sometimes it’s better that way, ‘specially when you’re a sweary, spitty teenage girl who’s main aim is getting through high-school in one piece.
But then a sinister shell company wants to knock their school down and is prepared to stop at nothing. She and her friends are the only ones invested enough to care and smart enough to investigate.
Regardless of the danger, Cady finally gives up being invisible to fight. And she discovers that getting in the way of politicians and their schemes might just get her killed.
“Cady, with spark, snark and enthusiasm will capture your heart in such a way you will want her to be your best friend. She is a voice, hero and visibility for a young disabled generation, a guide for us all and a mystery to solve”.

                                Kylie Key
A boy
A dance
A disappearing act
A lost shoe
A wicked Great Aunt
There I was, starring in my very own fairytale, dancing with a handsome stranger at the Christmas Winter Dance.
But then, in a Cinderella reversal, he was gone!
And I was left musing over the boy who had set my heart on fire.
Can I find him again, and will I get my happy ending with the boy from the Christmas Dance?

                                                                       Kylie Key’s Bio:

Kylie is still very young at heart. She loves writing about first crushes, first kisses and first loves.

My kind of author.

She lives near the mountains (in New Zealand), and loves walking alongside the river, which is where she dreams up her stories.

How awesome, Kylie. I am officially jealous.

Other things she likes are her two cats, Toby and Steve, chocolate in any form and watching sunsets at the beach.

Ohhhhhhhh…sight and sight

Erin fell in love with a veterinarian, there is only two problems…his girlfriend and the dog

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019

Didi Lawson exchanged her town car for a pick-up truck and learned to operate a tractor when she and her husband moved from Arizona to a farm in  Missouri where she now weaves her tales. Her love for writing started early in  life when  she entertained her friends with her stories, won prizes for he essays in high school and wrote road shows and poems for the youth group in her church. She enjoys the outdoors, her children and ten grandchildren, and keeps an active social calendar.

Erin O’Neal loves Christmas, except not this year because she’ll be all alone for the holidays. To make matters worse, she receives a dog as an early Christmas present, but cannot keep it. The man who delivers the dog is the snob who has embarrassed her in public a few days ago.

When the snob, a handsome veterinarian, injures his ankle and needs someone to drive him home to Prescott for the holidays, Erin is available. Getting to know him better, she falls in love with him. There are only two obstacles: his girlfriend and her own dog phobia.

Snippet:
May I have this dance, Erin?he asked.
She could only nod. Speech was impossible as a lump had formed in her throat. After a few steps, she asked, Should you be dancing with your injured foot?
Im wearing a brace,he said and then he grinned. Besides, I can lean on my dance partner.
The guests had formed a circle around the dance floor as more couples joined.
Erins hand felt cold at first but warmed quickly in his firm grasp. With his right arm around her waist, he pulled her close, resting his chin on top of her head.
Relax,he mumbled, youre doing great.
Relax, he says. How can I relax feeling the way I do and knowing its all for nothing?
Did you say something?
No. Nothing.
He drew her in even closer, so close that she could feel his heartbeat through the fabric of her dress. She tried to lean back to keep some distance but finally gave up and rested her head on his shoulder.
Thats better,he said with a smile in his voice, tightening his hold around her waist.

While
writing The New World trilogy proved to be one of the most exciting
challenges of my life, if anyone had told me six years ago I’d be
writing science fiction action-adventure novels, I would have
declared them bonkers! For most of my life, I had been an engineering
and programming nerd whose main reading materials included technical
scientific articles and books with little time to read novels of any
sort of fiction.
The
few dreams I experienced during my lengthy career as a Sr. Software
Development Manager at IBM mostly focused on conjuring solutions to
tough technical issues at work. Never did sleep delve into imagining
some fictional adventure. But that all changed after I retired from
IBM in March of 2007 at age 53 with 30 rewarding years of service.
The extra time on my hands provided plenty of hours to devote to more
creative endeavors.
My
initial attempt at writing capitalized on my 30 years of investing in
all sorts of financial assets. I wanted to share my knowledge with
our children to aid their financial planning. After completing more
than 400 pages of the manuscript, I joined a writers’ group. The
members liked the technical content but advised me to liven it up to
make in more attractive for my younger target audience of high school
and collage graduates getting a start on life. I came up with an
fictional world and a couple of quirky characters to weave into my
investing lessons.
The
members loved the improvements, but an unexpected problem bared
itself: my brain refused to churn out nightly ideas about
investments. Instead, my dreams gushed with captivating characters
and an intriguing new world with plenty of vicious beasts lurking in
the shadows of my mind. I had no choice but to follow the fate which
unfolded night after night, providing oodles of exciting material to
more than fulfill any writing desires. I provided my financial
manuscript to my daughters, and from that exhilarating change of
direction in 2014, I’ve been creating a fascinating new world at the
turn of the next century!
I
began writing my first novel, The New World: A Step
Backward
in June of 2014 and published it on June 28, 2015.
A little over a year later, on October 1, 2016, I published Book 2 of
the series, The New World: Blue Moon Generation. After a
bit of a delay due to the challenges of a serious family illness, I
completed the final novel of the Trilogy, The New World:
Crimson Winter
and published it on November 6, 2018.

This is a truly enchanting tale, well written and with great imagination. It is a coming-of-age book full of real life situations. It is an easy read, the characters are well defined and they could be any of our kids. The many real life experiences the characters live are so aligned with reality that you may think this is a biography instead of a fictional novel. It teaches many needed life skills for young men and women alike.

Five girls, related to each other and of the same age, are given the names of five princesses. Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora, Ariel and Bell. This should please them to no end, especially being as their last name is Princess. However, the girls do all in their power to have nothing to do with their cartoon counterparts.

They live next door to each other and have been friends since they were born. Because of this they don’t have friends outside their family. Their lives could be harder if it were only one girl with a princess name. Instead they have been good so far except for the pesky teasing they get from everyone in school. That all changes when a handsome young man moves in across the street from the girls. They became fast friends and do everything together during the summer.

Now the princesses are ready to go to High School and become somebody different than princesses … that is until a horrible witch discovers their secrets and makes them public. On the first day of school they find out that life will be quite miserable for them, as they are called names and made fun of by all the other students. Being bullied in school was just raised a notch higher. Life is hard enough without having to live in fear of High School.

The princesses at first don’t know what to do, but one of their fairy grandmothers gives them an idea. From that moment on they work together to change the view the rest of the students have of them. Will this last resort work for them?

This book is entertaining, a page-turner, and a great clean read for Young Adults and their families alike.
