Mom, how do I do Faith???

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016
Today we have first time author Bronwen Oehlschlager and her artist Tari Huffaker for a visit.
Bronwen, where were you born?
I was born in Washington State, but I grew up (for the most part) in various areas of Idaho. The last place we lived before I moved out to go to school was Harpster, Idaho. A tiny little blip of a town that you’d miss if you blinked.

I know what you mean… What is the hardest part about being an author?
This is my first book. 🙂 I think the hardest part so far has been getting over my fears and breaking out of my safety zone. This little work is very special to me and I want to share it with the whole world… and I want to keep it secret in case someone doesn’t like (me) my point of view and inspiration. But hard things are good for us! So I’m overcoming those fears.
Good for you. Who or what inspired you to write this book?
Well, faith has been something that has fascinated me since I was about 17. I made a study of it because I had a feeling that I was doing it wrong. I needed to know the nitty gritty. I needed to get it right. I was teaching it to my children when my 5 year old (now 7) asked me this all important question: “Mom, how do you DO faith?” That did it for me. I had to put something together to help her. The honor and glory truly go to the Lord for how it came together.
What is the name of your  children book?

“Mom, How Do I DO Faith?”
What genre is it?
It falls under the genre: Faith
Tell us more about it
My book is a coloring book illustrated by Tari Huffaker (my talented mother).
My dream is to have my book come in to a great many Latter Day Saint homes who have children of any age. I want to help little ones get their heads around the faith process, and how to live in a high-vibrating-harmony with Father in Heaven’s laws – a harmony that will allow them to do miracles with their faith, and “expand with love”, as President Monson would say. The scriptures can be hard for a little one to search. With “Mom, How Do I DO Faith?” I hope that they will have a leg up on scripture study and understanding.
It can be purchased on Amazon. It is not in a digital format since it is a coloring book. http://www.amazon.com/Mom-How-Do-Faith-Home-School/dp/1519402740/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453484538&sr=1-4&keywords=mom%2C+how+do+I+do+faith

About the Artist, Tari Huffaker

Tari, what inspired you to do the illustrations in this children book?

Tari_2015Nov30

Bronwen asked me to do the drawings.  She said that she wanted very simple “stick figures” and that this was to be a coloring book.  I don’t mind confessing that I was terrified by this request.  I am a potter not an illustrator…that is really my mother’s forte.  I pondered and pondered how to do stick figures for a coloring book…after all, true stick figures are just, well, boring!  I really prayed about this assignment and the drawings in the book are what evolved.

How long did it take you to do the illustrations?

It took months for me to complete the book…mostly because I was afraid to disappoint Bronwen. Secondly because if I couldn’t draw at just the right time of day my hand would shake too badly for me to make a decent Mom, or sister, etc.

Where were you born?

I am what is known as an Air Force BRAT.  Yes, that brat is in capital letters that are about 6 feet tall.  I was actually born at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.  But Dad was transferred when I was almost 2.  So, I can say, like that country song, “I’ve been ev’rywhere, man. I’ve been ev’rywhere.”

LOL… When did you start to draw?

About 34 years ago I took a 6 week art class with my mom at Merced Community College.  The class was called “Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain”… I did okay and then never really drew a thing again.  Now I get credit for something the Lord really did…I have my name on the book my daughter had published…but it should really be the Lord’s name.
