Hadrian could lose his title, his position, and if he’s not careful, his life

Thursday, October 10th, 2019

Rachel Rossano lives with her husband and three children in the northeastern part of the United States. Homeschooled through high school, she began writing her early teens. She didn’t become serious about pursuing a career as an author until after she had graduated from college and happily married. Then the children came.

Now she spends her days being a wife, mother, teacher, and household manager. Her evenings and free moments are devoted to her other loves, writing and book cover design. Drawing on a lifelong fascination with reading and history, she spends hours creating historical feeling fantasy worlds and populating them with characters who live and breathe on the page.

Accusing
eyes and a wave of hatred and confusion followed us out the doors of the dining
hall. I wanted to put up a stronger shield around Hadrian, but no amount of
energy was going to block out the spite behind us. It helped that Hadrian was
leading us down the corridor at a pace that kept me trotting to keep up. The
farther we were away from that crowd, the better.
Where
may I have an hour in private?
” Hadrian sent. I was so distracted by the
emotion behind us that for a moment I thought he was asking me. Then my brother
replied.
Taking
a sharp left, Hadrian flung open the next set of double doors and swept into
one of the side rooms off the main corridor. With quick orders from Renato, two
defenders took up stations on either side of the doors while the remaining four
followed us into the room and closed the doors behind us.
“Guard
the windows from the outside,” Renato ordered. I heard them obey, but I didn’t
see them because my attention was taken up with watching Hadrian.
He
had crossed directly to the far wall of the room and sagged against it. His
wide shoulders sloped and his head fell forward as though it was too heavy for
him to lift. This alone would have concerned me, but the storm of pain, fear,
anger, and frustration that warred within him was what tore a cry of help to
the Almighty from my heart.
Almighty,
help him. Give me wisdom. What can I do to ease his pain? Please, God, give him
peace.
“Hadrian?”
Renato’s panicked query brought Hadrian eyes to him. “You didn’t eat any of the
fruit, right? Do you need a healer?” My brother stepped forward into the sept
son’s personal space. “What is wrong?”
Hadrian
raised a hand wearily and pushed him back. “I am fine, Renato. Now go fetch
Korneli. I have time for him now.”
“Answer
my question first.”
Hadrian
merely shook his head. “No, I didn’t eat. I am not going to die, Renato. At
least, not at this moment. Now go.”
Nodding,
Renato turned to me. “Come. Korneli is…”
“No,
she stays here.” Both of us turned to regard the sept son. Hadrian had not
moved.
“But,
Master, you said I was to never leave you and her alone.”
“Send
in Plantonio when you leave. He will act as witness. Now go get Korneli before
I throw you out.”
“Yes,
Master.” Executing a sharp salute, he walked toward the door, sending me a
warning look as he passed.
Hadrian
did not move as Plantonio appeared, saluted, and then took station near the
door. I watched Hadrian carefully, monitoring the emotions that kept flaring
from him. Without the life of his dark eyes, his face appeared years older than
I knew him to be. Feathered lines radiated from his closed eyes and deep
crevices bracketed his mouth. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of hours of
lost sleep. A flare of anger distracted me from his face for a moment as I
stepped back from the intensity. His eyes flew open and immediately focused on
my face.
“How
did you know?” he asked. Slowly lifting his head and straightening, he crossed
to the nearest chair and sank into it.
“Pardon?”
“How
did you know it was poisoned?”
“He
intended to kill you.”
“But
how did you know? Did you read his thoughts?”
Fear
flooded through me. The servant hadn’t been a Talent. To read his thoughts
would be worthy of grave punishment. “No, he was projecting the emotions of a
man afraid of getting caught. When I saw him exchange the dishes, I knew why.”
He
closed his eyes and laid his head against the chair back. Pain washed over me
as his forehead tightened.
“Headache?”
I asked before thinking.
He
smiled bitterly. “The cost of stress and tension.”
“Where
does it hurt?”
He
sighed wearily. “Are you sure you want details?” He opened one dark brown eye
and squinted at me.
“Is
there anything I can do to help?”
Hadrian
closed his eye. “Yes. Come and sit in the chair across from me, so I don’t have
to keep looking up at you.”
I
quickly moved to obey, carefully stepping over his sprawled legs to reach the
chair. “Does this often happen, Sept Son?”
“What?”
He lifted a hand to massage his forehead. “The headaches?”
“No,
the attempts on your life.”
“More
often than I would like. I haven’t had this close a brush in a while.”
“Who
wants you dead?”
He
looked at me from beneath the shade of his hand. “The better question is who
doesn’t want me dead, Zez. The mesitas, half the kings, and most of the
worshipers of the goddess wish me out of the picture permanently.”
I
didn’t know what to say. I knew without a doubt that my father was one of the
group that wished Hadrian ill. What words does one offer a man who has recently
faced death?
“I
don’t hold it against you, Zez. Your father’s position has not affected my
trust in you or Renato. In fact, Renato’s closeness to me has limited some of
the attacks because Ilar doesn’t want to harm his son.” He paused for a few
moments. “I am sorry to bring you into the midst of this. This isn’t the place
for you.”
I
shook my head. He was wrong. “This is where I am supposed to be. If I hadn’t
been here, the Almighty wouldn’t have used me to prevent your death.” I
shuddered slightly at the thought. “I am the most qualified in many ways, and
you are going to teach me so that I can grow even more skilled. He has a
purpose for me here.”
He
laughed softly. “I can’t argue with that. His purpose is the only thing that
keeps me here. Though, I fear at times, Zez, that I am not going to survive
this. Each time I face my mortality, I wonder what the Almighty has in store.
All it would take is one moment when He decides not to show me grace and stop
the assassin’s hand. One time and all I have worked for would be gone.”
“He
has promised that what He has purposed will come to pass.” I quoted one of my
favorite passages of the Revelation to him. “I shall pray that He will continue
to spare you.”
Lowering
his hand, Hadrian looked at me and smiled slowly. “Thank you, Zez. Your prayers
will guard my soul while your Talent will guard my body. I will do the same for
you and, Almighty willing, we shall survive. If not, at least we shall be at
peace.” Then he quoted another favorite passage of mine. It spoke of the
instantaneous transformation at death when a believer steps from his own body
into the presence of the Almighty.

Jeffrey Bardwell is the author of The Scion’s Delight, a prequel to his Mage Conspiracy series

Friday, August 2nd, 2019

Jeffrey, welcome to my blog. How long have you been writing?

I have been publishing fantasy novels since 2017. The actual writing began when I was six, a few decades earlier.

Tell us where you were born and where do you live now.

I was raised in a rural town in northern Virginia, bounced arund the country a bit from Texas to Missouri, and then landed back in a different small town in central Virginia. Life is funny like that.

How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?

If it sticks in my mind after the notion / dream / inspiration strikes, and I want to find out more, it’s a keeper.

Who has made the greatest difference for you as a writer?

My beta readers have helped spur a marked improvement in my writing. My first book was a hot mess.

What is the name of your book?

My new book is The Scion’s Delight, the prequel to my Mage Conspiracy series. It was inspired by a dream about a haughty princess trying to repair her broken death maze to torture rats. When I realized she was the younger incarnation of the evil empress in my main series, I knew I had a good story brewing.

Tell us more about it. Perhaps a back cover blurb.

A cunning trap. A whiff of magic. A burst of steam.

Princess Cordelia has steel plate ambition, a mind like twisting brass gears, and the political might of tin foil. The girl aims to ratchet the Iron Empire into a glorious new day of gears and steam. The entire palace is arrayed against her. The chambermaids disdain her. The emperor ignores her. The mages, championed by Lord Oriolanus, lead a brisk campaign of lies and coercion. Those evil magic users threaten to tighten their grip upon the land even though machines are clearly superior. By the gods’ oil-stained hands, why can’t anyone else see her vision of the ideal future?

Just when Cordelia’s future threatens to slip back into medieval quagmire, a lone stranger with ice blue eyes and flowing blond hair arrives from the savage north. The handsome barbarian is destined to make both the hearts of the empire and the princess tremble. Does this spell doom or salvation for the girl’s fragile dream?

Explore The Scion’s Delight, the fantasy romance prequel novella of The Mage Conspiracy series. Discover a world of adventure and intrigue where lies cut deeper than any sword.

Do you have a favorite character, why?

In this new book, I think Cordelia’s retiring servant Fortinbras is my favorite. His name is an homage to a character from one of my favorite fantasy authors growing up (email the correct guess who to jhbardwell@gmail.com for a free ebook!), and his deadpan pissing contest with the ruler of an empire was a joy to write.

Here is the other books in the The Mage Conspiracy

Book one

Book two

Book three

What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?

I write to edify and enlighten, but most of all to entertain. I think Erin Kahn said it much, much better than I can: A book by Jeffrey Bardwell is always a good time: exciting, dangerous, gritty, and multi-layered . . . fast-paced, entertaining, and psychologically intense.

Do you have any advice for authors trying to break into the industry?

Keep writing. Don’t be afraid to push yourself out there. Your first book will probably suck. Write another. I went back and rewrote the first book in my Artifice Mage series three times before I was happy with it (and the book truly deserved the title “epic” fantasy.)

Where can we find your book?

About the author

I grew up in Arkansas, just a few miles from Louisiana. Violet Patton was a grandmother. I took her name as a pen name in her honor. She didn’t read much and when she did it was True Confessions magazine. She married a man twice her age at 18 and she did not have romance in her life, but she longed for it. She was tough, picking cotton, milking cows and tending a garden to keep her family alive. Behind her toughness was a sweet tenderness which showed through her beautiful blue eyes. Now as I age, I miss her more and more. Her photograph graces my desk, and I often ask for her advice or read my stories aloud to her. I can hear her laugh as I read my stories and I remember that spirit she never lost despite her adversities.

When a stranger dies while gripping her chin in his hand, passing to her the gift of prescience, she begins to witness awful crimes before they happen

Thursday, October 25th, 2018

Denise is a Southern girl who has lived in Louisiana all her life, and yes, she has a drawl. She has a wonderful husband and two incredible children, who not only endure her writing moods, but who also encourage her to indulge her writing passion. Besides writing romantic suspense, she enjoys traveling, reading, and cooking. Accounting is a skill she has learned to earn a little money to support her writing habit.
She wrote her first story when she was a teen, seventeen handwritten pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last romance novel she had read. She’s been writing off and on ever since, and with more than a few full-length manuscripts already completed, she has no desire to slow down.

Desperate to begin a new life, Jerilyn Bowman changes her name and goes off the grid. Sparks fly when Det. Nick Moreau confronts her about her identity and then seems to follow her wherever she goes. When a stranger dies while gripping her chin in his hand, passing to her the gift of prescience, she begins to witness awful crimes before they happen.

Jerilyn’s claim that she’s able to see the future both frustrates and fascinates Nick to the point he can’t get her out of his mind. Are Jerilyn’s claims of second sight a cover for her own crimes? Will Nick discover the truth before Jerilyn becomes the killer’s next victim?

Snippet:
Jerilyn broke their
stare down, leaned away from the stranger, and mentally prepared to run.
“I love old
buildings. They speak to me.”
His comment stalled
her. She glanced sideways at the guy. “They speak to you?”
He nudged the camera
around his neck. “I’m a photographer.” He pointed at the third-floor. “She was
in that room.”
“Who?” Her question
stuttered out of her mouth. Had he seen the face in the window just as she had?
“The woman.”
Without a doubt, he
meant he’d found the murder victim. She glanced up at the window. Had she just
seen someone staring down at her from the room where he’d found the dead woman?
“So why did you come
back here?”
His eyes seemed to
glaze over as he focused on the third-floor window. “I can’t get her off my
mind. You look a lot like her, you know.”
Jeri had the strange
feeling he didn’t mean the dead woman.

Has cyber good versus evil from the dark net become a challenge they simply cannot win?

The
Enigma Broker
The
Enigma Series Book 8
by
Charles V. Breakfield & Roxanne E. Burkey
Genre:
Techno Thriller

Inexplicable
drops in world markets for oil, copper, coal, and other commodities
are destabilizing nations to the point of economic collapse. A
conspicuous increase in production numbers for primary oil producing
companies results in a call for help from governments and a large oil
distributor. The R-Group quietly engages amid fears that further
drops in value could devastate civilization.
Jacob
Michaels is called directly by ePetro’s Mike Patrick, CEO of the
multinational oil broker, due to some prior data and network security
he had performed. The early investigation into the production number
manipulation by Jacob, with his coworker and lover, Petra, suggests
the problem is a result of hacking by a Dark Matter Organization.
Where is the DMO operating, who is at the helm driving commodity
prices down, and how does the search evolve into a perilous hunt
which puts Jacob, Petra, and other members of R-Group directly into
the path of mortal danger!?
Hidden
leadership of the DMO is fierce and lethal when it comes to
protecting the organization and its plans of global commodities
market control. The enforcers of this agenda are quick to execute
orders without question as soon as they are issued. R-Group’s
advantage of leading technology resources, brilliant technologists,
and years of experience may not be enough to locate the genius source
bent on commodity market domination. Has cyber good versus evil from
the dark net become a challenge they simply cannot win?
The
Enigma Broker, by Breakfield and Burkey, the award-winning authors of
The Enigma Series, takes readers on a journey from the affluence of

Breakfield
and Burkey
 started
writing non-fictional papers and books, but it wasn’t nearly as fun
as writing fictional stories. They found it interesting to use the
aspects of technology that people are incorporating into their daily
lives more and more as a perfect way to create a good guy/bad guy
story with elements of travel to the various places they have
visited, either professionally and personally, humor, romance,
intrigue, suspense, and a spirited way to remember people who have
crossed paths with them. They love to talk about their stories with
private and public book readings. Burkey is also conducting regular
radio interviews with other authors, which is interesting. Her first
interview was, wait for it, Breakfield. You can often find them at
local book fairs or other family oriented events.

The
original series is based on a family organization called R-Group.
Recently they have spawned a subgroup that contains some of the
original characters as the Cyber Assassins Technology Services (CATS)
team. The authors have ideas for continuing the series in both of
these tracks. They track the more than 150 characters on a
spreadsheet, with a hidden avenue for the future coined The Enigma
Chronicles tagged in some portions of the stories. Fan reviews seem to
frequently suggest that these would make good television or movie
stories, so the possibilities appear endless, just like their ideas
for new stories.
They have completed book video trailers
for each of the stories, which can be viewed on YouTube, Amazon’s
Authors page, or on their website,
enigmabookseries.com.
Their website is routinely updated with new interviews, answers to
readers’ questions, book trailers, and contests. You may also find it
fascinating to check out the fun acronyms they create for the stories
but summarize on their website.

No

Best
friends Tallie Graver and Gina Laudermilch both seem to spend a lot
of time around urns. For Tallie, they’re part and parcel of the
family business, Graver’s Funeral Home. Even though she’s traded
ashes for dusting with her own cleaning business, she still works
part-time for her folks and lives above the funeral parlor. For Gina,
they’re the vessels that con-tain her heavenly brew at her coffee
shop, Bean There, Done That. And both women are learning that owning
a business can make finding time for romance challenging.
But
when Gina’s new beau turns out to have a wife, who barges into the
coffee shop to take him home, she can’t contain her bitterness and
loudly threatens to poison his cup or boil him in a vat of coffee. So
when Mr. Wrong turns up dead at the bottom of a staircase inside
Gina’s locked home, she finds herself at the top of the police’s
suspect list. Tallie needs to sweep in to save her friend. But she’ll

Cremains
of the Day
A
Tallie Graver Mystery #1

There’s
no reverse on the hearse . . .
For
Tallulah Graver, marrying wealthy Waldo Phillips seemed like the best
way out of the family business, the Graver Funeral Home. But when her
marriage falls apart and Tallie is left with next to nothing, she
turns to cleaning houses to make ends meet. As humbling as it is to
tidy the mansions of the snobby socialites she used to call friends,
at least she doesn’t have to be around dead bodies. Until . . .
She
discovers one of her employers lying in a closet with a knife
sticking out of her chest. This unpleasant shock seems to be part of
a web of weird experiences: Tallie’s friend Gina’s shop is broken
into, her ex is stun-gunned where it hurts the most, and now she’s
receiving flowers from the dead woman. Granted the deliveryman is
handsome, but seriously, that’s enough to cast a pall over anyone’s
day. Now Tallie needs to dig deep to clean up this mess—before she
finds herself in a grave situation.

Ground for Remorse is a cozy murder mystery by Misty Simon. Talli’s best friend Gina is suspect of killing the Gigolo with whom she had a couple of dates, and Talli has to clear her name. It seems as if Talli has a knack at catching murderers as shown in a previous book. She helps the police find the murderer the police didn’t have a clue. In this story, things get worse during the Gigolo’s funeral. A woman is found in the floor of the room where they will have lunch, a new wife appears as does another woman who is pregnant with his child. There aren’t many suspects in his murder and all the clues point directly at Gina.

Ground for Remorse is a great murder mystery with the right amount of bodies and suspense. It is a cozy mystery with a few cases of unnecessary swearing. It has quirky characters that enhance the tale, bits of humor and a lot of surprises.

All in all, I enjoyed the story and the characters. It is a fast paced book and moves flawlessly to the last page. In it you will find a great read for a afternoon in the sun or by the fireplace.

Misty
Simon is the author of Cremains of the Day and Grounds
for Remorse in the Tallie Graver Mystery series. She loves a
good story and decided one day that she would try her hand at it.
Eventually she got it right. There’s nothing better in the world
than making someone laugh, and she hopes everyone at least snickers
in the right places when reading her books. She lives with her
husband, daughter and three insane dogs in Central Pennsylvania where
she is hard at work on her next novel or three.

Two
Sharpe Publishing was created as a company to publish some books that
my daughter and I wrote together.  This was not something Amanda
nor I had ever even dreamed of, but then life has a way of sending
you down the path that it wants… regardless of where you were
planning on going.
On
September 16, 2015, Amanda’s husband Kevin was on his way home from
work late one night and was waiting for traffic to clear in the left
turn lane about a mile from their home.  A drunk driver coming
from behind Kevin, at what was estimated 75 mph in a 45 mph zone,
veered out of the travel lanes and struck Kevin in the rear of his
Dodge Neon with a full-size SUV.  Kevin was killed instantly in
the crash.
Several
months after Kevin’s death, Amanda wrote an autobiography of her
life with Kevin called
Stolen and
she asked me if I would help edit the book.  Once we put the
finishing touches on Stolen, we decided we would cowrite a fictional
series called The Charly Stevens series.
People
deal with the loss of a loved one in many different ways. After
starting the Charly Stevens Series, we came up with another fictional
series called Road Rage The Blog. It is a real time blog written by
Simon, a man who has a great deal of rage, especially when he gets in
a car.
Once
we had an idea for the above projects, we needed a Social Engineer to
handle publishing, website development, cover art, and social media
for our company.  We were lucky enough to convince Kris Spoon to
join our team.  Kris has a wide range of experience in the world
of publishing and social media and has used those unique skills to
create a platform for not only the works we have created to date, but
for those to come.  We hope in the future to be able to help
other authors bring their works to life through our company.

Three Dead.

FIVE
KNIVES welds the intensity of Jack Bauer’s “24” to the

“The
author is a great talent.” — Aaron C. Brown, Amazon Top 1000
Reviewer

When
a man plummets to his death from an apartment tower, Will Finch’s
shock soon becomes a nightmare. As he studies the open windows above
the corpse, Finch notices a lamp blinking erratically behind a drawn
curtain on the eleventh floor.

When
he investigates the distress signal, Finch discovers a woman
handcuffed to a bedpost. Over the following week, he uncovers a
conspiracy that ties the murder to a series of bombshells. The
victim’s bankruptcy. A global stock fraud. A murder spree that
began in Baghdad and is now haunting the citizens of San Francisco.
Is this the work of a serial killer, a copycat — or both?

But
before he can file his report for The San Francisco Post, Finch’s
leads evaporate. Within days, three victims are dead. Does a pattern
of five knife wounds provide a clue? Can he unravel the mystery
before he — and his fiancée — are caught up in the web of
murder?

Five
Knives is the prequel thriller in the Will Finch crime series — a
novel that opens on the first day of Will Finch’s journalism
career. Everything that Finch learns about crime reporting begins
with Five Knives.

Can one woman evade an alien empire to save her son’s life?

Friday, July 13th, 2018

Lauren H Salisbury was an English teacher for sixteen years with an MA in Education. She is now a writer who dabbles with tutoring and lives with her husband and a room full of books in Yorkshire, England.

She likes to spend winters abroad, following the sunshine and becoming the seasonal envy of her friends. When she’s not writing, she can be found spending time with family, reading, walking, crafting, or cooking. Courage is her debut novel.

Can one woman evade an alien empire to save her son’s life?
Gilla and Elias have the perfect life—or as perfect as life can be for slaves living deep in the Esarelian Empire. Elias wants freedom for his precious wife and daughter, and the rest of their people, and he is willing to fight to get it. Pregnant with her second child, Gilla only wants a happy, healthy family who share a strong faith in the God of Old Earth and to get through her workload each day.

When the Esarelians decide to teach their rebellious slaves a lesson they will never forget, Gilla’s entire life is turned upside down. She must trust that God has a plan to protect her new-born son, and have the courage to follow it, choosing the strangest of allies in an effort to ensure his survival.

Courage is a science fiction retelling of the Biblical story of Moses’s birth. It has strong, quirky characters, strange alien worlds, and a gripping plot with a twist on the original.

CUSP OF NIGHT
Hode’s Hill
#1

by
Mae Clair
Genre: Thriller/Suspense

Pub
Date:
6/12/2018

The truth hides in dark places…
Recently settled in Hode’s Hill,
Pennsylvania, Maya Sinclair is enthralled by the town’s folklore,
especially the legend about a centuries-old monster. A devil-like
creature with uncanny abilities responsible for several horrific
murders, the Fiend has evolved into the stuff of urban myth. But the
past lives again when Maya witnesses an assault during the annual
“Fiend Fest.” The victim is developer Leland Hode, patriarch of
the town’s most powerful family, and he was attacked by someone
dressed like the Fiend.
Compelled to discover who is behind the
attack and why, Maya uncovers a shortlist of enemies of the Hode
clan. The mystery deepens when she finds the journal of a late
nineteenth-century spiritualist who once lived in Maya’s house—a
woman whose ghost may still linger. Known as the Blue Lady of Hode’s
Hill due to a genetic condition, Lucinda Glass vanished without a
trace and was believed to be one of the Fiend’s tragic victims. The
disappearance of a young couple, combined with more sightings of the
monster, trigger Maya to join forces with Leland’s son Collin. But
the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she comes to a hidden
world of twisted secrets, insanity, and evil that refuses to die…
Mae Clair opened a Pandora’s
Box of characters when she was a child and never looked back. Her
father, an artist who tinkered with writing, encouraged her to create
make-believe worlds by spinning tales of far-off places on summer

elements of mystery. Married to her high school sweetheart, she lives
in Pennsylvania and is passionate about writing, old photographs, a

My publicist friend Krista and I made a book trailer for Tick Tock. Here’s the link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnYfD2zPRP0

How did you come up with the idea for an anthology?

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group admins took a poll and then made a final decision on the genre based on the results and what Dancing Lemur Press accepts.

How did you find all the authors for it?

The contest was open to all IWSG members – bloggers, Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads members. The finalists were decided by a panel of judges consisting of agents and authors.

What is the name of this anthology?

Tick Tock: A Stitch in Crime.

The previous anthologies were Parallels: Felix Was Here (science fiction) and Hero Lost: The Mysteries of Death and Life (fantasy).

How many authors are in the anthology?

Eleven made the cut.

What genre is this anthology??

Mystery/Crime?Thriller

Do these authors only write mystery/crime/thriller?

For most of them, it is their preferred genre. But for several authors, this is their first time venturing into this area, which is exciting.

Where will you promote this book?

Reviewers, pre-publication reviewers & magazines, bookstores, libraries, signings, and online – blogs, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and through a blog tour.

She’s a writer because beautiful prose seduces her and existential angst continues to plague her despite such preoccupations having gone out of fashion. She takes occasional refuge by invoking the spirit of Jane Austen to spin tales of love, loss, and finding one’s way-stories into which she weaves mystery or intrigue.

Prologue:

I’m alive. I’m dead. I’m in-between. In that limbo where my vital signs hover just above death. I rise above my body and look down on it, lying on a gurney. Hospital staff are rushing me along the brightly-lit hallway to the operating room. One of them holds an oxygen mask on my face. Another, a bag of intravenous fluid connected to my veins by a tube.

I’m not ready to die yet. These good people anxious to rescue me don’t know that my resolve is the only thing that is keeping me alive. No, I’m not ready to die-I’ve only just begun to live. I have yet to prove to myself, to the world, that I have what it takes to prevail.

My family-now on their way to the hospital-doesn’t know yet exactly what happened to me. And except for one detective, neither do the police. I see him now by the foot of the gurney, keeping pace with the nurses. He’s scowling, his lips pressed into a grim line.

A tall, taut, and solitary man, he has deep-set gray eyes clouded by too many images of violent death and a lower lip that hangs perpetually open in disgust or despair. So much darkness he has already seen in his thirty odd years in this world. He needs to piece together the facts that constitute the attempt on my life, events that may have led to it, and various fragments of my past to understand what brought me to this point.
The first time I met him, I fell in love with him. There was something primal about him, some paternal, animalistic instinct to save hurt or fallen victims. Like me, maybe. It gave him power and it made him irresistible to me.

But fate is fickle. It teases. It entices. One day, something quite ordinary happens to you. Yet, you sense that that ordinary something can change your life. Not necessarily for something better, but for something new. Fate is dangling before you the promise of a world that, before then, was totally out of your reach. How can you not seize it?
Now, of course, I see the end of that promise. And it’s not where I want to be.
It’s tragic, don’t you think, that the end of that promise should be right here on a gurney, with me fighting for my life? It certainly is not what I hoped for.
How could it end this way? I embraced life, took chances, but half-dead on this gurney, I wonder: Am I paying with my life? But, like I said. I’m not ready to die yet
