The hairs on his arms rose as he heard the howl again

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

I am a children’s author, but up until a few years ago, I was a journalist and editor. Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. We had a great time and I thought I’d write them a short story as a different kind of souvenir…. Well, one book and a planned book series later, I had changed careers. I have now published Book 3 (The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper) in my MG adventure series Chronicles of the Stone, with many awards for the first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, and a few for Book 2, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, and one already for Book 3! I also teach online novel writing for aspiring authors and I find that very satisfying. Relaxation time finds me enjoying something creative or artistic, music, books, theatre or ballet. I love doing research for my book series. I love animals and have written two animal rescue stories. I have two adorable (naughty) little dogs called Chloe and Pumpkin, and a beautiful black cat called Bertie.
A modern day adventure as our protagonists search for Excalibur and the treasures it holds! This is a must-read for Middle Graders keen on action, adventure, and Arthurian stories!

Continuing the adventure that began in Egypt a few months prior in The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, cousins Adam and Justin Sinclair are hot on the trail of the second Stone of Power, one of seven ancient stones lost centuries ago. This stone might be embedded in the hilt of a newly discovered sword that archeologists believe belonged to King Arthur: Excalibur.

However, their long-standing enemy, Dr. Khalid, is following them as they travel to Scotland to investigate an old castle. Little do they know there is another deadly force, the Eaters of Poison, who have their own mission to complete. Time is running out as the confluence of the planets draws closer.

Can Justin and Adam find the second Stone of Power and survive? And why did Aunt Isabel send a girl with them? Join Justin and Adam as they search not only for the second Stone of Power, but also for the Scroll of the Ancients, a mysterious document that holds important clues to the Seven Stones of Power.

As their adventure unfolds, they learn many things and face dangers that make even their perils in Egypt look tame. And how annoying for them that their tag-along companion, Kim, seems to have such good ideas when they are stumped.

Book extras include some historical background on King Arthur, the Dark Ages, warfare and weaponry during Arthur’s time, and details on Excalibur. A fascinating peek into the life and times of the real King Arthur, perfect for young time travelers and budding archaeologists. For coloring-in enthusiasts, ten original black and white illustrations including 2 maps make for more enjoyment!

Snippet:
He heard a faint howling noise in the distance. Wolves? Adam froze with fear. He desperately tried to remember whether there had still been wolves in England during the Dark Ages. There must have been because there was no other sound quite like the howl of a wolf. The hairs on his arms rose as he heard the howl again. Although he pinched himself to wake up, it was no good; he remained in the dream. At the sound of distant hoof beats, he almost ducked behind a large tree trunk. There was no time to hide because suddenly the drumming hooves were all around him. Then came the faint melancholy wail of a battle horn, and the tinny sound of chinking metal. He could hear the crisp snap-snap of fluttering pennants, and when he turned, he glimpsed banners waving among the trees. The surge of spectral riders halted and one man, seated on a white horse, appeared at the head of the cavalcade.
The eerie figure came closer, the horse lifting its feet carefully, clip-clopping right up to the trembling boy. The horse was huge, its trappings gleaming with pinpoints of metal rosettes, its long tail and mane hanging like ghostly cobwebs in the pale moonlight. The beast snorted and stamped restlessly. Adam saw the burnished glint of a helmet with a dragon-shaped crest topped by a red plume. Although the cheek pieces of the helmet obscured the man’s features, the shadowy figure was looking right at him. A red cloak swirled around the warrior’s body and, as the fabric swung aside, Adam saw the gleam of chain mail and the dark shape of a breastplate on the man’s chest. The warrior’s armor seemed more Roman than he expected. A banner flapped from the spear of a man behind the warrior: a red dragon on a white background. The warrior raised one arm, and a roar erupted as the sounds of cheering burst from what seemed to be thousands of throats. Although Adam heard strange words in another language, somehow, he understood what the voices said.

Distracted by heartbreak, he is caught off-guard by a military coup

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

Adam Gowans is the youngest of five Air Force brats, out of which his siblings have voted him the weirdest. He loves anything that deals with stories, including movies, novels, television dramas, music, video games, manga/manhwa, and webtoons.
In his mid-twenties, he lived and taught English in South Korea for four years before returning to the States to live, like many LDS authors, in Utah.
His first novel is On Angelic Wings, which has a planned sequel, but the sequel will be released after two other novels that are calling for his attention.

Ever since magic caused his mother’s death, Ha-Neul, crown prince of Balhae, hates witches and the magic they wield. He has instituted harsh laws against all magic users.

Lisa is a young witch working undercover as a servant in his palace, hoping to gain freedom for her people. The last thing the two expect is to fall in love. But when Ha-Neul learns that Lisa is not only a witch, but the daughter of the Prince of Vires, land of witches, he banishes her. Distracted by heartbreak, he is caught off-guard by a military coup.
In hiding and on the run, Ha-Neul swallows his pride and travels with his siblings to Vires, planning to beg Lisa’s aid, only to learn that she has mysteriously vanished.
Now his only hope in reclaiming his kingdom and reuniting with Lisa lies in the remote Northern Mountains, a country no one has ever penetrated and rumored home of a powerful magic source. There, Ha-Neul learns that a being powerful beyond comprehension has been carefully guiding his destiny. But if Ha-Neul can’t let go of his hatred of all things magic, and accept the new path offered to him, it will mean the destruction of his entire world.

They are plunged into a whirlpool of hazardous and mysterious events when Dr. Khalid kidnaps them

Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. I love doing research for my book series. I love animals and have written two animal rescue stories. I have two adorable (naughty) little dogs called Chloe and Pumpkin, and a beautiful black cat called Bertie.

In this exciting Middle Grade adventure set in Egypt, a 5000-year-old mystery comes to life. A scruffy peddler gives Adam and Justin Sinclair an old Egyptian scarab on their very first day in Egypt. Only when the evil Dr. Faisal Khalid shows a particular interest in the cousins and their scarab, do the boys realise they are in terrible danger. Dr. Khalid wants the relic at all costs. Justin and Adam embark upon the adventure of a lifetime, taking them down the Nile and across the harsh desert in their search for the legendary tomb of the Scarab King, an ancient Egyptian ruler. They are plunged into a whirlpool of hazardous and mysterious events when Dr. Khalid kidnaps them. They learn more about the ancient Seven Stones of Power and the mysterious Shemsu-Hor. They must translate the hieroglyphic clues on the underside of the scarab, as well as rescue the missing archaeologist James Kinnaird, and their friend, the Egyptologist Ebrahim Faza, before time runs out!
Snippet:
1.     The Giant Cobra
The snake jerked
at the sound of his voice. It glided closer to the stone sarcophagus. Adam lay
back on the pile of smelly bones and closed his eyes to half-slits. He looked
up at the ceiling where the painted cobra shimmered.
I can’t believe
this is happening. I know it’s after me.
The slithering,
scraping sound grew louder. Then directly in front of him, just at the edge of
the stone sarcophagus, the forked tongue whipping back and forth came into view
followed by the loathsome head, which reared up, its hood spread wide. Then the
snake opened its monstrous jaws, revealing wicked fangs. A clear drop of deadly
poison, glistening like a pearl, trembled on the end of each fang. The reptile
made a hideous hissing as it stared into the stone coffin, hunting for its
prey, waiting for the tiniest movement that would betray his presence. Adam
closed his eyes so he wouldn’t have to look into the snake’s gleaming black orbs.
I’m finished, he thought,
sliding his hand into his pocket and feeling the scarab. Somehow, just holding
it made him feel calmer.
Then Justin
called softly, “I know how I can distract it.

The degree of it went past loathing and abhorrence. She held him in complete execration

Snippet:
He suppressed a shudder when her demeanor worsened. “I wasn’t entirely sure for the past couple of weeks, but now I’m convinced. You hate me,” he searched her face, looking deep into her eyes.
Lisa laughed, but it held no warmth, no amusement. “Yes, it is difficult for me to conceal it when you are in front of me.”
“Why?” His voice was a little soft, and his chest felt cold.
“Because you’re a monster.” Lisa spoke in Haeche.
He never believed he could see her countenance sour as much as it did at that moment. She no longer hid the extent of her hate for him, and it terrified him. The degree of it went past loathing and abhorrence. She held him in complete execration.

I was surprised at the joy I got out of putting those words to paper

Thursday, May 3rd, 2018

Jemi Fraser, welcome. How has your family background affected your writing, if it has?

I was born into a family of logical people where practical pursuits and hobbies were valued over creative ones. I was always a little bit of an oddball in the family  and while they didn’t necessarily understand my interests and tastes in art, music, and stories, they always encouraged me to be me. I didn’t consider writing – even as a hobby – until well after my kids were born, but the interest in stories had been cultivated long before that. Still, I was surprised at the joy I got out of putting those words to paper.

How interesting…What gave you the nerve to attempt your first novel?

When I did decide to try writing, I did it totally as a hobby for myself and myself alone. It took me another few years before the idea of actually attempting to publish something crossed my mind.  By that point, I had written a couple of very wordy, very angsty, very bad novels. The core ideas are there, but the novels themselves are hilariously bad.

You aren’t the only one with that experience. Please describe your writing process.

I am currently learning to plot. It doesn’t come naturally to me, but with the help of some very good craft books I’m doing a much better job and finding the revising process less complex.

Nice…Where do you do your best work?

As of romance author, I should probably say the bedroom, but the reality is that I do almost all of my writing in an overstuffed chair in my living room while my TV is playing sports in the background .

Now that is different. Please give us a brief rundown of the plot of “Until Release”.

Early release for good behaviour means Sean Walker is counting the minutes until he’ll be free. He’s not the only one counting, but the others don’t have freedom on their minds.

Wow! What genre is it?

“Until Release” is a suspenseful mystery.

What goal did you originally have for your books and/or writing?

I think my primary goal was and is entertainment. The world can be a sad or scary place for a lot of people. Fiction can offer a welcome release (pun intended) from all of that reality.

Ha, ha. How did you decide whether to self-publish or find a mainstream publisher?

I’m still in the process of making this decision. I definitely like both the control of self-publishing and the idea of having a team working with me that goes with traditional publishing. We’ll see what the future brings.

I know, right? How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?

In the past, I’ve only ever known this for sure by finishing the entire novel. Now that I’m learning to plot, it’s easier to see if the idea is viable or not before I dig in.

Makes sense…Where can we find your books?

Until Release is my first published work, but you can catch up with me at the following links

A war between worlds brews beneath the surface, threatening to rip the protective seams that keep the portals sealed

Sunday, November 5th, 2017
Kindred
The Birthrite Series #2
by Tiffany Apan
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
It is the summer of 1933 and nearly two years since that fateful
Halloween night in Plains, New York.
Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, eighteen-year-old Cletus Blake spends his
days working to help his family through the massive economic
recession spreading throughout the United States and many other areas
of the world. As society struggles to accept that the economic surge
of the 1920s are long gone, Cletus also clings to the memory of his
last phone conversation with his cousin Dorothy. Having formed and
maintained a relationship with two of her close friends – the
recently married Reginald and Gail Carr Johnson – the three find
solace in regular communication with one another.

Like Dorothy, Cletus possesses supernatural abilities inherited through
his bloodline. His vivid dreams and visions – including ones of a
beautiful young Romani woman and twin baby boys – continue to
increase in strength. Meanwhile, Reginald and Gail begin falling prey
to dark adversaries that have been lying in wait.
Evil surrounds at every turn, old friends race to help, and ancient evil
re-emerges. A war between worlds brews beneath the surface,
threatening to rip the protective seams that keep the portals
sealed.
Then in the midst of it
all, Cletus happens upon a caravan traveling through his Ohio town.
The very familiar Romanichal family’s history ties not only to his
own past, but to all the kin of the four men that experienced worlds
outside of their own on that summer solstice in 1844. All are linked
to a future that will reunite the Blakes and the Livingstons, two
families that at one time, shared a very unlikely
friendship.
Kindred is the second
full-length novel in The Birthrite Series. Picking up from where
Descent and Sacred Atonement: A Novelette left off, the story
continues to challenge all that is known about light and dark, good
and evil. Passion, intrigue, and secrets abound as history unravels.
Revelations uncovered in previous installments are given new
perspectives, taking the reader on a thrilling ride into a world
where nothing is ever what it appears to be.

Tiffany Apan grew up among the thick forests of the Appalachian Mountains in
Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was there she began honing artistic
abilities and received much of her creative inspiration. A misfit
among her peers (she was the only one in her fifth grade writing
class obsessed enough with Vikings and Norwegian mythology to write
poems about them), Tiffany was highly active in the artistic
community in Wilkes-Barre, PA, involving herself in all music,
theater, visual arts, and writing. Eventually, she settled quite
comfortably into a role as “that artsy kid in black” who sits in
a coffee shop, drinking endless amounts of coffee and tea while
writing furiously in a journal or sketchpad.
After graduating high school, she left the Northeastern PA ghosts for the
Southeastern PA zombies (Pittsburgh). Upon the move, Tiffany became
involved with the indie film scene, landing supporting roles in a
couple films. This also gave way to the release of her music with
partner in crime, Jason English. Since then, she has gone on to act
in several films and theater productions with starring and supporting
roles, release music to critical acclaim, and receive accolades for
her writing and producing.
The Appalachian Mountains serve as a backdrop for many of her stories,
including The Cemetery by the Lake and The Birthrite Series
.

How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?

That’s tough. Probably when I know the beginning and the end. All I have to do is fill in everything in between!

Who has made the greatest difference for you as a writer?

The best answer is it’s Danyelle Ferguson’s fault for getting me involved in this crazy writing thing.

What is the name of your book?

Vocal Crush.

Tell us more about it. Perhaps a back cover blurb.

Can you ever out run a broken heart?
