How to Make a Hero
By Ron D. Voigts
Developing the main character for a novel is probably the most difficult task. In The Witch’s Daughter, I wrestled with myself to come up with just the right mix of a good guy, human being, and flawed character. I feel that many writers project themselves into the protagonist of the story. Let’s face it–most of us lead pretty bland lives with respect to the characters in our books.
For some reason, the name came to me first. Cavendish Brown. I liked the sound. My brain saw a superhero type guy, thriller material, spy like, able to leap tall building in a single bound. But as I developed him I saw a need to bring him back to reality, mess up his life a bit, and have him wrestle with the person he has become.
At the beginning of The Witch’s Daughter, he has lost his wife to cancer and descended into depression which he expressed mostly as anger and drinking too much. His rescuer is Marbella Wellingway who offers him the job of taking over the town newspaper. Of course, she has other ideas which include matchmaking with her daughter Alexandra. In Book 1, he faces his inner demons and comes to grips with the reality that life goes on after you lose a loved one.
In Book 2, The Fortune Teller’s Secret, he is still mourning his dead wife while trying to continue his life. He knows he has to keep living, but it’s hard. Most important in this second book is finding himself and a purpose in his life. Does he stop drinking? Well, not quite. Will he be less moody? Probably not. Does he have a lot more growing to do? Absolutely.
I would like to share a one paragraph note I keep handy to remind me about who Cavendish Brown is.
Cavendish is the reluctant hero. He is reclusive, a loner. Introvert. He keeps to himself, keeping his feelings private. But when he must put on his “red cape,†he will come to the rescue to right wrong, defend the downtrodden, and protect the innocent. Unfortunately, he can get carried away once he turns on the magic. He landed a guy name Freddie in the hospital because of the way the jerk treated his girlfriend. He beat up another man who he though was stealing his girlfriend Nikki. He sucker punches a bullie who picked on Jane. Most times he tries to keep his temper in check. Not losing it means not hurting someone.Â
I named Book 2 not for the murder but for something important told to Cavendish Brown by the Fortune Teller. In “A Cavendish Brown Paranormal Mystery†series, each of the main characters will discover things about themselves taking them to their destiny. Rosalie, the fortune teller, tells to Cavendish a detail about himself that will change his life. What is it? You got to read The Fortune Teller’s Secret to find out.
