Kristy Centeno loves to spin tales of creatures that go bump in the night, with a sprinkle of romance to top them off. Matt Mitchell was having the worst summer imaginable. Matt’s misery
started when a drunk driver killed his mother. Then Matt’s father
moved him and his sister to a small town in rural Indiana, as far as
his grieving father could get from the ocean that his mother had
loved. At the new high school, three bullies were determined to make
Matt miserable. And to top it off, Matt learned that the recluse who
lived in the dilapidated Victorian mansion next door was none other
than Old Lady Hawthorne, the town’s infamous witch and murderer.
Matt’s terrible summer was turning into an awful autumn when
something quite unexpected happened. Old Lady Hawthorne’s niece and
her three children moved in next door, and Matt met Gerallt.
The Secrets of Hawthorn House by Donald Firesmith
Matt and Tina Mitchell are twins who just lost their mother in an accident. Their father takes them far away from the seaside they love to the small town of Hawthorn. There they find themselves next door to the famous haunted house of the ghost of the gray lady. Matt needs some money and starts to clean the yard of the haunted house for Mrs. Hawthorn, getting to know her and her timid ways.
One day, her niece comes to live with her along with her three children. Matt becomes Geralt Hawthorne’s best friend and soon discovers that his family is not the common family he is adjusted to. Their secrets, their corky ways, no electricity, no games or computers make for an interesting friendship. Not only that, but the bullies at school are after them…they will have to pull together or be defeated.
This is a great, clean and entertaining story for middle grade and young adult kids who like mystery, treasure hunts and magic. It is nicely done by Donald Firesmith. I would keep my eyes out for the next book in this series.

I found Dial Meow for Murder by Bethany Blake the most interesting book I have read lately. It has all kinds of quirky characters that keep you interested and alert to what will happen next. It’s a pet’s lover Eden and a fantastic story to keep you warm on a winter day. Dial Meow for Murder is a story to be read by teens and adults alike. The writing is clean and wholesome. I enjoyed the story and the telling and recommend it to anyone who likes to read clean murder mysteries. It will become your and your family’s favorite story.
Dial Meow for Murder is the story of Daphne a pet lover and chef. She likes to cook for humans and for their pets and both love her concoctions. She has two special friends, a detective, Jonathan Black, and a surf guy by the name of Dylan. The one wants to protect her even from herself and the other wants her to go somewhere over the rainbow and be free with him.
Her life seems normal, with her sister, friend and mother who keep her busy…that is until she finds the first dead body in the mysterious Flint Mansion and a skeleton woman starts stalking her. Dial Meow for Murder by Bethany Blake is a great murder mystery.
Blake lives in a small, quaint town in Pennsylvania with her husband
and three daughters. When she’s not writing, cooking for pets and
people or riding horses, she’s wrangling a menagerie of furry family
members that includes a nervous pit bull, a fearsome feline, a blind
goldfish, and an attack cardinal named Robert. Like Daphne Templeton,
the heroine of her Lucky Paws Mysteries, Bethany holds a Ph.D. and
operates a pet sitting business called Barkley’s Premium Pet Care.

“That’s a very good question. Let me demonstrate. Dani, can you help?”
She looked around, then pointed to herself in an exaggerated manner. “Me?”
“It seems as if she’s a little shy. Let’s encourage her.” Trevor started clapping. The noise grew until Dani blushed and gave him a look he hoped wouldn’t kill him.
He reached out his hand to help her up. “Come on.” He positioned her in front of him and said, “Act like you’re waiting for a bus.”
Dani crossed her arms and tapped her right foot, then checked her watch. Standing behind her, Trevor reached around her neck. “Remember number 2, take charge. The first thing to do is lock your chin down.”
She followed his directions.
“This will make it so your attacker cannot cut off your air supply.” Still holding onto Dani, Trevor continued. “One move won’t be enough, so think in multiples—a heel to his instep and an elbow to the solar plexus.”
Dani acted quickly, stomping on the inside of his foot. He grunted and let go of her neck. She finished with an elbow to his stomach.
Trevor groaned and grasped his abdomen. “Excellent demonstration. Did everyone get that?”
Dani smiled innocently. “Should I do it again—in case someone missed it?”
“No. no. That’s good. You can sit down.”
