Doing the right thing means turning his back on everything he knows.

Talon Haraway was born to be a leader. Strong, confident, and skilled, at seventeen he commands the Arcaian army without thought, expecting results and getting them. When a new set of recruits arrives in Valadir, the last thing Talon expects is to have one of them redefine what he always thought he wanted. Now with pressure from his Arcaian leader and surrogate father, Tyrus Blinnsdale, Talon must decide who he wants to be and where his loyalty lies before it’s too late.

Tell us where you were born and where do you live now.
I was born in Provo, Utah, and I now live in a dinky Idaho farm town where the chances of getting stuck in traffic due to tractors are highly probable.
How do you know the idea is good enough to write a book about it?
When the idea won’t leave me alone! I scribble things down and when more comes from it, I stick with it to see where it goes.
Who has made the greatest difference for you as a writer?
I think the support of my family and critique partners and friends. I wouldn’t be where I am without any of them–I really owe them everything I’ve got! Especially Elizabeth Briggs, she’s amazing. She was my first critique partner and we’ve stuck together for at least five years now. She helps me so much, it’s ridiculous.
What is the name of your book?
Such a Clever Deception.
Tell us more about it. Perhaps a back cover blurb.
It’s a prequel to my Stolen Tears series, about Talon Haraway, a born warrior who is faced with the decision between what is right and what he knows.
Do you have a favorite character, why?
I really love Talon himself. He’s complicated; he is strong and conflicted, he’s being torn between one set of people and the people he calls his family and has to decide what really  matters the most to him. It’s a choice we all have to make at some point in our lives as well, I think. Not necessarily deciding between family or others per se, but deciding what we believe, what’s worth fighting for, where we stand on important issues.
What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?
Enjoyment, really. I want them to have an emotional reaction, an attachment to my characters, to cheer for them and call things out while they’re reading, to love my stories so much they can’t help gushing about them to others the way I do with books I love.
Do you have any advice for authors trying to break into the industry?
Decide what you really want out of it. Do you want an agent, or would you prefer to have control over your work and when it comes out? I’d say try both, try everything, see what works for you. Keep writing, keep reading–reading is inspiration for writing. Take classes, study study study, reach out to other writers, and try to peel yourself out of the critique process. Critique can be the hardest part of this (or getting bad reviews, lol!), so if you can separate yourself from the process and see what others are trying to say that will help your story, do it!
