Roslyn Welsh is sent by stagecoach to Junction City to marry a man with whom her aunt and guardian, without Roslyn’s knowledge, had been corresponding. His requirements for a wife were that she must be at least twenty-one years of age with a family Bible for proof, and she must have no children. Only, Roslyn is not quite twenty-one, she has a baby, and her aunt has no intention of sending the family Bible with her. The marriage prospect turns into a disaster. Stuck in a strange town with no money, she is told there is no work for a decent woman with a baby. To allow herself time to figure what to do with her future, Roslyn accepts an offer to ride the stagecoach to the Ellsworth B.O.D. Stagecoach station to help the stationmaster’s wife.
Elam Stewart survived the American Civil War, but his left leg from above the knee down did not. With no home to return to and realizing there are very few people willing to hire a man with only one good leg, he’s convinced he has no future. While working as a day laborer in the local Junction City livery, he becomes intrigued by a visitor named Ross who is anxious to spend time with the horses. Elam discovers Ross’s secret. Then he learns where Ross intends to seek work. Even though he does not have a future, he does have a Spencer repeating rifle. He can have a purpose.
Roslyn and Elam ride the same stagecoach to the Ellsworth Station on the Kansas frontier. Between resentments among the stock tenders, difficulties with animals that pass through the station, and the threat of attacks by the Cheyenne Native Americans, is there a future for Roslyn and Elam at the station? Or will their future take them on another stagecoach ride away from Ellsworth?
Please look for my other two books in the Widows, Brides & Secret Babies series, Mail Order Lorena and Mail Order Penelope, that will be published this summer. The three stories are related and part or all of them involve  the stagecoaches and stations on the Kansas frontier in the late 1860s.

Snippet:
Ross laughed in response—a laugh Elam now recognized as being feminine.
“I see what you mean.” She reached for a bridle. “Will this do for Sadie?”
“Yes, ma…” Elam cleared his throat. Get ahold of yourself, Elam. You almost said “ma’am.” Don’t know her reason for passing herself off as male, but it ain’t up to you to go calling her on it. “Reckon that will be fine, Mr. Welsh. You wanting me to saddle this here horse for you?” Why did I offer? Because I know she’s a woman? She already done said she could saddle and tack her own horse.

Chic lit at its best with Anna del C. Dye

Saturday, March 7th, 2020

Interview with YA, clean medieval romances Anna del C. Dye

Tell us where you were born and where do you live now.

I was born in Valparaiso, Chile among famous beaches.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took me about a year before revisions. I published five bilingual  picture books for children in between.

Who or What inspired you to write this book??

The main character, Alexandra. She kept coming to my mind and gave me visions of her life. She is a strong woman though it took her some four months to realized it. I think she needed a sound board before she made sacrifices to save her kingdom from High Chancellor Stanislav’s paws.

What is the title of your book?

Her Prince Charming

Could you give us a back-cover blurb?

A future worth rescuing, a love worth waiting for, and a dream worth sharing

Danger lurks in the court as Stanislav the high chancellor, seizes an opportunity to take the crown and the princess for himself.

Caught between duty and freedom, Princess Alexandra has to chose to be free to find a happy ever after or marry Stanislav as he demands and let him take the crown from her.

When Prince Christoffer offers a solution by marrying her…wouldn’t that mean another marriage without love? However, if she accepts his proposal, she will sentence him to death.

What genre does your book fall under??

Young Adult, Medieval Romance

What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?

Beside, entertainment, I would like them to see that when life gets tuff, we need to get tougher by keep trying.

What else might pique the reader’s interest in your book?

This book is loosely written with a Russian theme in mind.

Where can we find your book?

If they gave out diplomas for what you learn at the mall, Charlotte could graduate with honors

Friday, December 13th, 2019

USA Today, bestselling author, Janette Rallison/ CJ Hill writes books because writing is much more fun than cleaning bathrooms. Her avoidance of housework has led her to writing thirty novels that have sold over 1,000,000 print copies and have been on many reading and state lists. Her books are fantasy, sci-fi, and romantic comedy because hey, there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage of humor, romance and hot guys who fight dragons. She lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, kids, and enough cats to classify her as eccentric.

Charlotte must prove who is right, once and for all, and that means catching Bryant in the act. This is where her mall roaming skills will come in handy. Perfume anyone?

Fans of Sophie Kinsella will love this book!
Snippet:

Candy let out a sigh. “He’s cute, Char. I’m so happy for you.”
“It’s not like we’re a couple or anything,” I said quickly. “I just, you know, kind of like him, but he, um, doesn’t really know.”
“Well, we can work on letting him know at my party.”
No, no, no. This was not going at all the way I wanted it to. “Oh, I don’t want to do that,” I choked out. “I mean, I want to be low-key about the whole thing. You know, just hang out and see if anything interesting happens.” Interesting between Shelby and Bryant, that was.
“Do you need something nice to wear? I just bought some pashminas that are to die for.”
Pashminas? I was not about to admit I didn’t know what part of your body you put a pashmina on. “Thanks,” I said, “but I have plenty to wear.”
“Are you sure? You know, the right outfit could accentuate your assets while concealing your figure flaws.”
Figure flaws? I was afraid to ask what she was referring to. “I’m really okay as far as clothes go.” At least I was until two seconds ago, when I started worrying about my figure flaws.

There was no question in my mind, no doubt about whether or not I was dead

Monday, October 28th, 2019

Born and
raised in the rainy streets of the Seattle Area, L.P. Masters spent her fair
share of time staring out rain-streaked windows and writing books. Masters has
always had extremely vivid dreams, which often spark inspiration for her
novels. In 1999, after one such dream, Masters began her first writing project.
She has participated in National Novel Writer’s Month every November since
2010. Writing isn’t the only thing she can do with a pen in her hand, she also
enjoys sketching and drawing—with varying degrees of success. Masters now lives
in the slightly-less-dreary city of Spokane Washington with her husband, four
wonderful daughters, and two crazy dogs.

Gina’s plan
for her afterlife is simple: survive as long as possible. The afterlife is a
ghost-kill-ghost kind of place. When she meets newly-dead Alec, she can’t help
her desire to protect him. Before she knows it, she finds herself falling for
him, despite the little voice in her head telling her it’s a bad idea.
Alec’s goals don’t mesh well with Gina’s plans. Determined to save his living
sister from a murderer, he’s willing to disobey the laws of a well-established
cult in the afterlife. If the cult finds out, they’ll kill him. Again. He’s
hesitant to accept Gina’s help and threaten her afterlife, but he’s guaranteed
to fail without her. Together they embark on a perilous mission, but the most
dangerous aspect of all is the threat of falling in love. Because in the
afterlife… love is death.
Snippet:
My vision blurred as I leaned my head against my stone. I fought the
feeling, but there wasn’t much I could do, so I slipped into a dream. Ghosts
rarely slept, but when we needed to, there was no stopping it.
I drew in a long, deep breath.
I was alive again as I dreamed.
I could feel the seatbelt chafing my shoulder, the cracked leather on the
armrest digging into my elbow. I could barely keep my eyes open. Streetlights
flashed through my closed lids as we drove down the road.
It was three in the morning. The party at Micah’s house had lasted all
night, and my boyfriend, Caden, and I had stayed up late the night before,
studying for finals.
“Did you have fun?” I asked Caden absently, eyes still closed. He
didn’t answer, but I didn’t think anything of it. I’d almost drifted back to
sleep when I heard the horn blaring.
My eyes flew open to the glare of headlights aimed straight through the
passenger-side window.
“Caden!”
The dream turned to slow motion as that pair of headlights crashed through
my window. Pain like none I’d ever felt before ripped through me. The noise
rose to a crescendo, and I could feel.
I felt myself being torn apart, my soul wrenched from my body.
There was no question in my mind. No doubt about whether or not I was dead.
I walked to a rock that sat in front of a nearby driveway and hugged my knees.
I scanned the quiet streets, waiting for some sort of light or understanding.
Waiting for heaven. Heaven never came, and it didn’t take long for me to
realize that the afterlife was nothing more than hell on Earth.

What seems to be the problem? And why are we meeting here at this orphanage?

Julia Ridgmont
grew up in the American West, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she knows how
to ride a horse. What it does mean, however, is that she loves to weave the
country’s rich history into riveting tales full of romance and intrigue.

When she’s not writing, Julia enjoys cooking, sewing costumes for her children,
spending time with her husband, and watching her children perform in sports or
plays—or, if she’s really bored or stuck on a plot twist, cleaning the house.
She also writes contemporary inspirational romance under her real name, Laura
L. Walker.

Follow Julia as she unveils heroes whose strength and courage are only
surpassed by their tenderness, and heroines who hide their lonely hearts with a
cover of steel. It will take overcoming insurmountable odds and an iron will
for them to find a love that lasts forever. Luckily, they have Julia to help
them along.
To guard his heart or protect two little girls . . . Is he willing to risk it all?

1871Pinkerton detective Chas Bryant’s last job for the agency is supposed to be
easy—deliver a cache of stolen items back to Mount Vernon after recovering them
from profiteers. Soon, however, Chas discovers that nothing in this case is
simple. When he’s called upon to search for a little girl gone missing after
her parents are murdered, there’s only one woman who can help him . . . but
he’ll need to make her his wife in order to complete the investigation.

Jessica Flanders is only trying to rescue her younger sister from a fate
bleaker than death. How can the powers that be possibly think that separating
them from each other is a good idea? Jessica made a dying promise to her
parents. Now she needs Chas’s help to get her sister back, but when they dig
deeper into the matter, they discover another little girl with an even greater
need for being rescued.

Soon it becomes clear that someone else is searching for the missing girl, too.
Can they keep her safe until the case is solved and the murderers are caught?
If so, Chas and Jessica will need to forge a bond that is stronger than the
evil forces surrounding them, and in the process, a love that will never be
lost.

Read each of the Pinkerton Matchmaker stories in any order. These agents give
the phrase “married to your work” a whole new meaning!

Snippet:
“I’ve made a promise to serve and
protect the people of this land, and that is what I intend to do. You are old
enough to fend for yourself. This little girl isn’t. And wanting to keep her
under your delicate wing, without a husband to aid you, is not only pure
foolishness but selfish to boot.”
Jessica reared back as if she’d been
slapped. How could wanting to take care of her sister be considered selfish?
She stood to her full height of five-foot-six and told the deputy, “I resent
that remark. I demand that you hand my sister over right this minute!”
“And I demand that you remove yourself
from the premises. You have until the count of three before I arrest you.”
“Jessica!” Amy whimpered, her huge
eyes nearly taking up all the space in the upper half of her face.
Jessica’s heart pounded. What should
she do?
“One . . .”
Whatever it was, she needed to do it
quickly.
“Two . . .”
Please,
Lord, show me a way to keep Amy.
“Thr—”
“There you are, darling!”
A new voice, one that Jessica didn’t
recognize, came from her left. The deep baritone cut off the deputy’s threat.
Jessica turned toward that voice to find a man whose dark hair was cut short on
the sides, and whose slight beard and temples were touched with gray, approach
from her side. “I’m sorry I was so late getting off work. I saw your note,
saying that you had come here, and followed as fast as I could.”
Jessica’s jaw went slack. As the man
placed one large hand on her shoulder and leaned in for a kiss on her cheek,
she fought the urge to slap him for taking such liberties. The stranger smiled
even wider at her discomfiture and resumed his playacting. “What seems to be
the problem? And why are we meeting here at this orphanage?”
“Um . . .”
The man had eyes that were bluer than the
Potomac. Oh, my.

How hard can it be to tame his darker, more cynical side?

Detour
to Paradise
by
River Ames
Genre:
Sweet Contemporary Romance

Lucas
Rockworth—a hard-driving force of nature has been ordered by his
doctor to take some time off and get his blood pressure under
control. You would think buying a cabin in the natural splendor known
as Gray Horse Lake, Idaho, would do the trick. All that mountain
greenery, crystal blue lakes and rivers, and nature-run-amok had to
be exactly what the doctor had ordered.

Enter
Sarah Burke… The innocently enticing young entrepreneur who’s
opening an equestrian camp for children with handicaps.

Her
initial impression of him is clearly wrong. For some reason, known to
the reader but unknown to him, Sarah mistakenly believes that Lucas
Rockworth is a shy, sensitive man. After having to deal a lifetime
with a dominating older brother and controlling father, she finds
these traits very appealing.

Her
recent breakup with someone who could best be described as a bully
has Sarah longing for a kinder, gentler man in her life.

Lucas
tells himself that, since he makes his living as a general
contractor, he has the hands-on experience to make himself into
anything Miss Sarah Burke is looking for.

It
shouldn’t be that great a stretch to become a modern, sensitive
kind of guy, should it? She wants Mr. Rogers… Well, darn, he can
manage that for the short time he’s in Idaho.

How
hard can it be to tame his darker, more cynical side?

As
for Sarah Burke? She thinks she’s met a real life version of Mr.
Rogers. But, the reader knows its Rambo who’s come
a’courting.

Would
the real Lucas Rockworth care to step forward?

River
Ames spent the first eighteen years of her life in Southern
California. Here is a partial list of some of the cities in which she
lived: Pasadena, South Pasadena, Duarte, El Monte, Arcadia La Puente,
Lomita, West Covina, Pacifica, Santa Monica, Palmdale, and Hacienda
Heights. In some of those cities, she lived at six different
addresses. In the city of La Puente, River’s family lived in four
different houses on the same street. The non-glamorous reason for all
the moves was habitual eviction necessitated for non-payment of rent.
It was an interesting way to grow up.
River
attended twenty-six different elementary schools, two different
junior high schools and four different high schools. In one
elementary school, she was a student for only three days.
Perhaps,
because she was so frequently identified as the “new girl,”
the pattern of River being an observer instead of a participant in
the interactions going on around her seemed a logical fit for her
personality.
When
she was thirteen, River read “Gone with the Wind.” She
skipped three days of school in order to finish the book in one
sitting. Disappointed in Rhett for “not giving a damn,”
River wrote her own sequel–in long hand, on three-hole punch,
notebook paper. The opening line? “Tomorrow dawned bright and
fair.” In less than fifty pages, Scarlett had been transformed
into Jane Eyre and Rhett had fallen in love with her all over again.
After
Southern California, River has spent the next part of her life living
in the semi-rural town of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is a graduate of
Idaho State University, majoring in Health Education Sciences and
Addiction Counseling. She’s worked the past ten years at a Behavioral
Health Center where she assisted children, teenagers, and adults
committed in a 24/7 secured facility because of mental health
challenges they are experiencing.
River’s
books celebrate the good-natured humor that lays at the heart of most
of our human predicaments. The conflicts are significant, yet it is
her characters and their quirky (yet somehow universally relatable)
thoughts, words, and choices that reflect a light-hearted peek into a
world we wish was real. The amazing thing is that these worlds are
real to readers for the time they visit there.
Readers
have said: “In a River Ames book, one minute I’m laughing out
loud, and the next I have a lump in my throat.”
River
is currently readying a historical novel, “Gideon’s Justice.”
This three-part novel is Book I in a three volume western series set
in the Colorado Territory.

Her whispery
voice sounded breathless.
“Andy . . .”
It happened in a
snap. The man’s titillating smile vanished.
Tara struggled to
sit up in bed. Wide awake, she sighed into the silence. Confusion settled
around her. Her hands slid up and down her arms. She stared around the darkened
room.

Sheritta Bitikofer
Genre:
Sweet Paranormal Romance

Belle
lives her life from day to day, nearly crippled by her social
anxiety. But if you ask anyone in Levi about it, they’d say she’s a
sweet, quiet girl who works hard to keep up her family’s small ranch
while holding down a job at the bookstore. No one knows that beneath
her smiles lay a shy introvert who wants nothing more than to stay at
home. It was easier to stay alone, stay isolated. That’s when she was
the happiest. But during one thunderstorm, all of that changed and
she met the first man she ever actually wanted to spend time
with.

Leo
made a habit of avoiding people when at all possible. Getting tied
down, making friends, having a life only meant suffering. The
darkness that followed him since his adolescent years never left, not
really. It’d show up and ruin any hint of happiness that came his
way. Running from his past and the brother that cursed him with this
demon, Leo never expected to find something like home in the little
country town of Levi. And he didn’t expect one storm to bring him to
the barn of a girl with fire in her eyes and a face as beautiful as a
sunrise. A sunrise that could chase away all the shadows.

The Autocon inside her body swam through her Shadow

Breanna Murphy has been planning her wedding for years so when her fiancé runs off with a hula dancer, she is forced to realize her destination wedding is nothing more than an exotic vacation for one.
Trying to escape the embarrassment and disappointment of being jilted at the altar, Breanna answers an ad for a job clear across the country. When the voice on the other end offers her the job, she’s excited about what awaits her in California.
Builder Calvin Comstock must make right on his daughter’s mistake regarding the nationwide advertisement and hiring of Breanna. He doesn’t know what to expect, but when Breanna walks into his office with her infectious smile, peaches and cream complexion not to mention her sexy southern drawl, Calvin is happy for his daughter’s error.
Breanna is drawn to Calvin’s mature movie star good looks, charming personality, soft voice, and strong hands. She’s trying to stay focused on the job and not the overwhelming lure she feels pulling her in to test the waters. But when the two realize the attraction is mutual they throw caution to the wind and give in to the undeniable desire to be together.

Can an ex-wife and a teenage daughter spoil their happiness or will it make them stronger than ever?

Snippet:
Calvin watched her as she walked toward the concrete stairs
that led upstairs to her room. Her gently swaying hips and auburn hair bouncing across her shoulders caught his eye, that was certain. These Louisiana girls were quite pretty, especially when they were part Creole and part Irish.
She quickly turned around as she grasped the railing. Her
wide smile infectious as everything else about her.
“I had a great night. Thanks for showing me around.”
“My pleasure. Maybe we can do it again sometime?” He dug his
hands in his pockets to help hide their shaking. It had been a long time since he’d taken a beautiful woman out to dinner.
“I’d like that, Calvin.”
“Oh, listen. Let’s not be so formal. Call me Cal.”
“Okay, Cal.” Her cheeks blushed, which perfectly coordinated
with her auburn hair.
“In that case, call me Bree.” She pulled herself around from
the railing and began to ascend the steps.
“Bree,” he called out.
She stopped.
“The floorplans.” He jogged over to his car and reached into
the back seat, pulling out a cardboard tube. “You’ll need this.” He handed her the tube then reached into his back pocket and retrieved his wallet. When he handed her the plastic card, their hands touched, and for a moment he wanted to pull her in and kiss her plump lips. Instead, he left his hand just a little longer on hers so he could pull in all the energy he felt from her, from her touch. “Here,” he said softly.
“Thank you,” she whispered.

He stepped away and then turned around. Walking slowly back
to his car, he wondered if she’d call him back and ask him up to her room. But that was just plain ludicrous. What young, beautiful woman, who you’d just only met, would do that?

Casey Wheeler is fleeing from her abusive and unfaithful husband

Wednesday, February 13th, 2019

“I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, the second of four children. Growing up with the influence of a long line of teachers with a passion for classical education, my time was filled with lessons in violin, cello, piano, ballet…and not-so-classical Girl Scouts and softball.
At the age of twelve, I traveled throughout Europe with my Grandmother and aunts, who filled my days with the shared reading of classics such as Jane Eyre and Sherlock Holmes, developing my love of literature early on.
I pursued my love of literature into college, earning a Bachelor’s of English, a Master’s of Education, and I am currently working to complete a Master’s in English.
My first novel, All the Wrong Places, started as a short story for a creative writing course and chronicles many of my experiences living in a mortuary, raising my daughter on my own and discovering my Christian faith.
My years in college writing programs have left me with a varied collection of short stories, plays and poetry covering many personal experiences from teenage rebellion to single-motherhood and spiritual awakening.
While writing and continuing my own education, I taught High School English in an attempt to pass my love of literature and writing on to others, and continue to share that passion with students and other aspiring writers.
I currently spend my days pursuing my creative dreams and reaching out to women to share my experience, strength and hope as a survivor of sexual assault and domestic abuse.
I reside in Eagle, Idaho with my husband,  and my very large cat. “

 ~ Website ~
Driving aimlessly through the stormy suburbs of San Francisco, Casey Wheeler is fleeing from her abusive and unfaithful husband with her five year old daughter Maddy asleep in the backseat. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, Casey loses control of her emotions and her car, crashing into a hillside below a mortuary.

Desperately seeking shelter, and more so independence, she finds herself taken in by the mortuary director who apprehensively offers her a job and a place to live. As she stumbles through the ins and outs of her new and morbid surroundings, Casey is forced into a hostile custody battle with her relentless and increasingly violent husband.

In the midst of all the chaos, she finds a new family and even love in the eccentric and protective people of Golden Oaks Funeral Home. But just when she has found all she could hope for, she will have to fight to the death to protect it.

This semi-autobiographical story of a single-mother and her journey to self-discovery, independence and a true understanding of love will keep readers captivated and yearning for more.
Snippet:
He was so becoming in his black suit, and I felt a slight and unfamiliar
kind of attraction to him. He had a warm smile spread across his face that made
me feel at home. What an odd feeling. Nobody had taken me in like he had, not
without an expectation of something in return. Would there be an
expectation?

Clearing her father’s name, will ruin her chances of a happy life with the man she love

Monday, February 11th, 2019

Didi Lawson exchanged her town car for a pick-up truck and learned to operate a tractor when she and her husband moved from Arizona to a farm in  Missouri where she now weaves her tales. Her love for writing started early in  life when  she entertained her friends with her stories, won prizes for he essays in high school and wrote road shows and poems for the youth group in her church. She enjoys the outdoors, her children and ten grandchildren, and keeps an active social calendar.

It was supposed to be simple traveling to Germany to find her roots. But nothing turns out the way Tracy had planned.

She meets a man who professes to be her half-brother and is less than happy with her visit. The villagers treat her with contempt for her father’s presumed infamous past.

Trying to solve the mystery, she uncovers secrets that had been hidden for over two decades. Wanting to clear her father’s name, she realizes that by doing so she will ruin her chances of a happy life with the man who had captured her heart.

Snippet:
Tracy’s eyes had followed the tall man’s imposing figure from under half-closed lids. Whatever the problem on the man’s mind, it must be a tough one, she decided. Both hands deep in his jeans’ pockets and a mighty scowl on his features bore witness to his dark mood. His shirt, unbuttoned at the top and tucked into his waistband accentuated his leanness and agility, but his stance betrayed no mercy, only solid determination, and she felt sympathetic toward anyone on the receiving end of such barely concealed indignation.

Diana inexperience and uncertainties have discouraged the charming Mr. John Richfield or has she?

Thursday, February 7th, 2019

For as long as she can remember, Bethany Swafford has loved reading books. That love of words extended to writing as she grew older and when it became more difficult to find a ‘clean’ book, she determined to write her own. Among her favorite authors are Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Georgette Heyer.
When she doesn’t have pen to paper (or fingertips to laptop keyboard), she can generally be found with a book in hand.

~ Twitter ~ Instagram ~

Twenty-year-old Diana Forester, a country-bred young woman, fears that her inexperience and uncertainties have discouraged the charming Mr. John Richfield.

On arriving back home from London, she learns that he has already arrived, ready to continue their acquaintance and explore whether they are suited for each other.

If Diana thought that deciding her future marriage mate was difficult in London, courting takes on a whole new aspect when Diana’s younger siblings become involved. She finds herself dealing with her own feelings, her sister, her younger brother, jealous members of a house party, a jilted suitor, and a highwayman as she falls in love with the charming Mr. Richfield.

Snippet:
Mother sat alone in the sitting room when I entered. “Come have a seat, Diana,” she said, gesturing to the space on the settee next to her. “Your aunt hinted you had something you wanted to share with me.”
“Yes, I do.” I crossed the room. The entire trip from London I had spent thinking of the best way to approach this subject. All of my planning vanished the closer I got to my mother. By the time I sat down, my hands were damp with moisture. “You recall I met a Mr. Richfield in London, shortly after I first arrived?”
“Yes, you mentioned him several times in your letters.”
Her tone was matter-of-fact, giving absolutely nothing away, which I should have expected. Mother was an expert at keeping her thoughts to herself. “Well—” I hesitated as I sought the right words. I rubbed my palms against my skirt. “At Aunt Forester’s last dinner party, Mr. Richfield asked for my permission to come speak to father.”
For a moment, there was silence. “What was your answer?” Mother asked, as calm as ever.
I bit my lip and found I could no longer meet her gaze. “I fear I may have spoken without thinking.” Back when I had said the words, I had been surprised. Now though, I realized just how mistaken I had been. “I said it’s always pleasant to have someone new visit.”
“I see. Do you like him?”
Ah, there was the question. “I think so.” I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “He is respectable, at least as far as Uncle Forester could discover. No one ever had a word to say against him. I think he is a good man.”
“And yet, you don’t seem enthusiastic about marrying him.”
“I have only known him for a few weeks.” It felt good to be able to talk this out with my mother, now the awkwardness of saying the words had passed. If anyone could help me untangle my feelings, it was her. “Is that enough time to know a person? You knew Papa your whole life before he proposed.”
Mother’s hand came over mine. “Diana, look at me.” I lifted my eyes to hers. “You are the only one who can make this decision. It is your right to refuse an offer you find distasteful. However, you need to understand it is not likely you will have the opportunity to travel again and meet other people.”
“I don’t find the offer distasteful. I don’t think I know him well enough to accept his hand in marriage.” I sighed. “I wish I had had the time to know more about him.”
            “Perhaps you will.”
I shook my head. That seemed an impossibility. “Mama, the look on his face when I pretended I didn’t understand. I acted as if I were a senseless, empty-headed child! What kind of man would pursue me in the face of that?”
“A man who would be understanding. Someone who would realize your shy nature.”
Pulling my hand away, I reached to pour myself some much-needed tea. “There are other, much prettier girls with better dowries than I,” I remarked, adding just the right amount of cream and sugar. “I doubt I will ever see him again.”
Of that, I was quite certain. I had spent hours considering what a mess I had made of the situation. Why would he chase after me when Miss Reynolds was on hand to charm and flirt with him? I sipped my tea as I watched my mother’s face. Her smile was one I couldn’t quite understand. Why did she look so amused?

            “Mr. Richfield is already here.”
