What makes you passionate about writing?

I love good story-telling. Whether it’s a movie, a novel or a comic book, I love taking in any great story. Since I was young I’ve always enjoyed sci-fi and fantasy stories in particular. Something about them has just always captured my imagination. Through my life I’ve searched for good sci-fi and fantasy to take in, and I just simply haven’t found enough of it. Since there wasn’t enough out there for my taste, I decided that I needed to make my own. I write the kind of stories that aren’t really out there right now, and that I really want to read. So I’m passionate about my writing because I’m creating the things I want to find out in the world.

It sounds fascinating. Do you have a writing routine?

I try to keep up a routine of writing a few hours per day. It can be a bit difficult, since I work full-time and have a family, but my writing flows better and faster if I can find a little time to do it every day, so I do my best to make sure it happens. As far as what I do when I’m writing, I don’t really have a specific routine, I just sit down and start writing.

A panter…so am I. What is the title of your book?

My latest book is the first in The Cross-Road Travelers series. It’s called The Key to the Demon’s Gate.

What genre does your book fall under?

This book is considered to be a YA fantasy, and it certainly fits in with that genre, but I’ve kept it clean and appropriate enough that I’ve found it to be quite popular with elementary school children and their parents as well as teens.

I love YA. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

When a group of wizards from another world attempt to banish a powerful demon, they actually trade its place with 3 teens from Seattle.

Don’t say…really? How long did it take you to write the first draft of The Key to the Demon’s Gate?

It took me about 6 months to write the first draft of this book. Re-writes and editing took me another 6 months on top of that.

Edits and more edits… we could write another book if we didn’t have to edit. What other books would you compare this story to, within your genre?

One of my biggest inspirations for this story was The Chronicles of Narnia. I love the concept of kids from Earth traveling to new worlds. There are a lot of magical aspects to this story that are similar to Harry Potter as well, but I think most readers will be pleased to find aspects of these stories that they’ve never found anywhere else before.

Narnia and Harry Potter you said? I’m in…Who or What inspired you to write this book?

As I mentioned before, I always loved the concept of kids being transported to another world, so I wanted to write a story about that. Aside from liking that concept a lot, I don’t know that there’s really one specific source of inspiration for the story, it just comes from everything that I take in and think about every day.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

This story truly has something for everyone with a strong imagination. It’s full of magic, fighting, bandits, pirates, heists, and so many other things. A lot of stories include too many things, and get overwhelming, but my focus in writing is on strong relatable characters, because having characters like that gives me the chance to include so many things and still keep the story interesting without being too much. A quick read through the reviews being left for this book will show you that my readers agree. This book is full of powerful imagination balanced out by fun, and interesting characters, making it a great read for people of all ages.

Where can we find your book?

This book is available in print, as an ebook, or as an audiobook on Amazon at this link: myBook.to/CRT-1

S. L. Morgan, when did you first know you wanted to be an author?
I have always been a ‘story teller’ since I first learned how to talk. I finally decided to put pen to paper in November of 2011. I haven’t looked back since. I love everything about writing and creating fantasy novels. It’s the best form of therapy I could ever ask for.

What makes you passionate about writing?
I believe it’s my love for my books and characters. I feel as though they are my fictional family and I enjoy every minute of being with them. It’s also fun to create any adventure I want and bring the characters on them.
What was the pathway like for you to get your first book published?
The first book was definitely a learning lesson for me. After a lot of consideration, I opted to self-publish my book series. Knowing that I was bringing a book out to the entire world to love or hate, I knew I had to take this process very seriously. (more…)

Brian, when did you first know you wanted to be an author?
I discovered that I liked to write before I was a teenager.  I never really thought about being an author, per se, I just enjoyed writing.

What makes you passionate about writing?
Whenever I have an idea or concept or picture in my mind, I find myself driven to try and convey it in words.  Sometimes it is a story or sometimes it is just a short poem.  I find myself immersed in the work of finding the right words or using the right form to make the idea come alive on the paper.
