Mark, where are you from?
Where are I from?  I was born in the middle of Happy Valley, Provo, Utah.
 Mark

If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

Time Travel..hmmmmmm  I would like to make a visit to family members in the 30’s and 40’s.  I like the music, movies, and fashions of that time.  The history was kinda rough and many things about it were way to sad, but I would like to visit family of the past.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would be? What food would you serve?

Dinner with a Character from our book?  Probably Al Reed and Paige Turner.  They are just your average kids and would probably have something simple to eat. Maybe a Pizza, Mac & Cheese, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, or a bunch of finger foods.

If you could travel anywhere, on earth or off, where would you go?

Travel anywhere on earth or beyond. Since it’s winter and cold here, anywhere warm.  An island with white sandy beaches.  A place where time just ambles on and you could just relax and enjoy nature hikes and sunsets.

Describe your dream writing spot.

My Dream Spot for Writing?  I’ve enjoyed writing in a library surrounded by books.  All that written word energy seems to help my brain.  When the writing bug hits, I’ll write where ever it knocks me over.
How did you find enough commitment to complete your book?
When writing a book you need to have a partner with an enormous cattle prod.  Or someone that is constantly inspiring you and keeping your creative juices flowing.  And on our book, Amy was the Fire and Dallin, and I were the slow burning embers…that sometimes went out.  But Amy kept fanning the fires.

What is the name of your book?

What is a hand without a puppet?  Naked!  And when you put that puppet on your hand, tah dahhhh  you’re dressing the naked hand.  So what better title.  We hope that no hand will find itself naked for long, and that soon, hands around the world will be dressed and ready for puppet play.

What kind of research did you do for this book?

The research we did for the book came about through reading books and more importantly, living, doing, and failing, and doing and doing…with over 30 yrs of puppetry experience I would hope I’ve learned something and could share that knowledge with others.

Amy if you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

There are two people that I would love to spend some time with — Aristotle and/or Albert Einstein — oh for a time machine!

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would be? What food would you serve?

I think Kevin (the blue monster on the back cover) would be my dinner companion of choice. I’m certain he would share my love of chocolates.

On the other hand, I must warn anyone wanting dinner with a certain single-toothed old lady (bottom right, pg 81), she’s a bit hard of hearing, won’t take no for an answer, and is known for her Hairy Toe stew.

If you could travel anywhere, on earth or off, where would you go?

Oh, I’d definitely have the Commander (found on the back of the title page) take me to realms and worlds unknown.

Describe your dream writing spot.

Oh, to dream!  My spot is in a warm and bright open-to-the-air Hawaiian seaside room with a resting couch, the walls filled with my library of reference books, stocked with my favorite office supplies, a never-fail computer, and ever full-of-ink printer.

How did you find enough commitment to complete your book?

I wondered myself at times. More than anything, you need to understand why you want to write a book. Deadlines come and go. Complications multiply like rabbits, despair looms menacingly on an almost daily basis, but what keeps you going is that goal, that deep down inside you reason to not just ‘want’ to write, but the ‘need’ to have written.

Dressing the Naked Hand: The World’s Greatest Guide to Making, Staging, and Performing with Puppets

Give us a back blurb of your book

Created by a team of master puppet builders and performers, Dressing the Naked Hand is the go-to manual for all things puppet. With workshops on stuffets, hand puppets, advanced puppets, stages, acting, voices, and much more, it’s the world’s most comprehensive puppetry guide–ever!

What genre is it?

Non-fiction How-to / Crafting

What kind of research did you do for this book?

After years of being a children’s librarian, and years watching Mark’s puppet shows entertain hundreds of kids and adults, I finally convinced him to teach me puppetry. I also joined the Utah Puppetry Arts Guild, attended guild workshops, and dedicated myself to learning from every expert I could find.

Additionally, in the final months of creating images and editing, I realized, for this particular image-heavy and image-specific book, I’d need to teach myself Adobe Photoshop. That was a learning curve!

Any special appearances or events coming up that you want to mention?

Puppetry is a hobby–a beloved, obsessive hobby–for each of us. This curtails our performance and workshop opportunities. We traditionally perform in June at the Orem Library’s Teddy Bear Picnic; on Labor Day weekend at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival; and the 3rd week of December at the SCERA Center for the Arts. Outside of those venues, Dallin and Mark do commission work for Imagine Learning, and Amy lectures on script and text analysis, as well as non-fiction at writing conferences such as Life the Universe and Everything (LTUE.net), World Horror Con 2016 (WHC2016.org), and Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers (WIFYR.com)
